The right crowdfunding site depends on what supporters are being asked to do: donate, back a promised reward, pay for ongoing creator access, lend money, or invest. For personal or cause fundraising, start with donation platforms; for a product or creative project, compare reward platforms; for recurring creator income, consider membership; and for loans or securities, understand the repayment or investment obligations before choosing a service. The 17 platforms below are organized by that fit—not ranked by a comparable success-rate test.
How to choose a crowdfunding site
Before comparing platform names, settle the basic terms of the campaign. The same word—“fundraising”—can describe transactions with very different consequences for supporters and organizers.
- Choose the funding relationship. Is the contribution a donation, a promised product or other reward, recurring membership, a loan that must be repaid, or an investment in a security? Do not present a loan or investment as if it were a donation or preorder.
- Match the audience and project. A personal emergency, classroom need, tabletop game, specialist electronic device, and startup investment call for different kinds of supporters. A platform’s audience and campaign tools may matter more than its headline size.
- Check what happens if the goal is missed. Kickstarter uses all-or-nothing funding: if the goal is not reached, the campaign does not receive the pledged funds. Other services may offer different funding arrangements. Verify the current rules for the specific campaign type before launch.
- Calculate the full cost. Include platform charges, payment processing, payout and currency conversion fees, taxes, late pledges or recurring charges where relevant, and the cost of producing and delivering rewards. A platform fee alone does not show what you will net.
- Plan for the work after funding. A successful campaign can still require pledge management, surveys, production, fulfillment, customer support, progress updates, loan repayment, or securities reporting.
- Confirm eligibility. Check country availability, permitted campaign categories, organizer requirements, payout methods, and any review or compliance steps on the platform’s current official terms.
No credible, comparable success-rate statistic for all 17 services is established by the available comparisons. Company-reported totals and audience figures use different scopes and do not show how likely a particular campaign is to succeed.
Best crowdfunding sites for donations and causes
Donation campaigns ask supporters to give without receiving a product or financial return. Use this category for personal needs and causes, not for a business offer that promises a product or ownership stake.
#1 Best Overall
1. GoFundMe — personal and cause fundraising
GoFundMe is a broad option to consider for personal and cause-based fundraisers. Its comparison page says platforms differ in fees, features, resources, and the kinds of fundraisers they host, so compare the fit and rules for your specific campaign rather than treating the brand as a guarantee of reach.
For the United States, GoFundMe’s Help Center, updated September 30, 2026, gives a single-donation transaction fee example of 2.9% plus $0.30. In its example, a $50 donation leaves $48.25 after transaction fees. The page says fees vary by country and recurring donations incur an additional 5% fee. These figures describe GoFundMe’s stated example and terms, not every country or campaign setup.
2. Fundly — donation fundraising candidate
Fundly appears among the donation-fundraising services in GoFundMe’s market comparison. Treat it as a candidate to investigate for a donation campaign; the comparison does not establish its current fee schedule, country eligibility, or funding rules. Check those details directly before setting a target.
3. FundRazr — donation fundraising candidate
FundRazr is also surfaced as a donation-fundraising option in the comparison. The available material does not establish current fees or whether a particular campaign can keep funds if it misses its goal. Confirm both points in the platform’s current terms.

4. DonorsChoose — U.S. public-school classroom requests
DonorsChoose is described as a nonprofit classroom-request platform for U.S. public-school teachers. That specific audience makes it more relevant to an eligible classroom project than a general product-launch site. Check current project and organizer eligibility before preparing a request.
Rank #2
Best crowdfunding sites for creative projects and rewards
Reward campaigns offer supporters a promised item, experience, or other benefit. The organizer must budget for production and delivery; reaching a funding goal does not ensure those tasks will go smoothly. Kickstarter’s creator guide notes that even funded projects can face production delays, higher costs, and other unexpected challenges.
5. Kickstarter — all-or-nothing creative campaigns
Kickstarter is a fit to consider when a creator has a defined project, a funding goal, and a plan to deliver rewards. Its all-or-nothing rule is central: missing the goal means the project does not receive the pledged funds. Kickstarter’s creator guide says, “A successful campaign requires planning, promotion, communication, and careful budgeting.”
For the United States, Kickstarter’s fee help page, accessed October 4, 2026, states a 5% platform fee plus payment processing of 3% + $0.30 per pledge. Its pricing page may vary by country, so do not apply the U.S. figures to campaigns elsewhere.

6. Indiegogo — reward campaigns with funding rules to verify
Indiegogo is another creative-project and reward-campaign option. The comparison material describes funding options beyond Kickstarter’s all-or-nothing model, but rules can change; verify the live campaign type and what happens when a target is missed before choosing it.
Indiegogo’s Help Center, last updated November 4, 2025, lists a 5% platform fee and payment processing as a fixed amount in the project’s currency plus $0.20 per transaction. Its example—not a universal effective rate—shows a $10,000 project with 100 transactions incurring $500 in platform fees and $320 in processing, leaving $9,180. Confirm the current schedule and currency-specific processing details.

17. Seed&Spark — film and story-led projects
Seed&Spark is presented as a specialist option for film and story-led work, rather than a general consumer-product marketplace. Before building a campaign around it, verify that it is accepting the relevant project and organizer, and confirm its current rules, geographic availability, and fees.
Best crowdfunding site for recurring creator income
7. Patreon — continuing memberships and creator commerce
Patreon serves a different purpose from a one-time campaign with a deadline: creators can use it for recurring membership and creator commerce. Consider it when the offer is continuing access or ongoing work, rather than a single project with a fixed reward and delivery date.

Existing creators may qualify for different pricing. Processing, payout, currency conversion, taxes, and some iOS transaction charges can also affect the amount received, so the plan percentage is not the full cost.
Best crowdfunding sites for products, tabletop games, and specialist hardware
These services are surfaced as more specialized candidates, but the available comparisons do not establish current fees or universal eligibility for each one. Their value depends on the project and its likely backer community. Confirm the present product, rules, and costs directly before launch.
8. BackerKit — pledge management and repeat creators
The 2026 secondary comparison describes BackerKit as a fit for pledge management and repeat creators. Consider whether its campaign and post-campaign tools match the way you expect to manage pledges, add-ons, surveys, and fulfillment; verify the current feature set and any associated costs.
Rank #4
9. Gamefound — tabletop campaigns
Gamefound is described as a tabletop-focused candidate. That specialization may be relevant when the project is a tabletop game and its supporters already follow that category. Check the platform’s current campaign and post-campaign terms rather than assuming they match another reward site’s rules.

Crowd Supply is described as a specialist-electronics option. It belongs on a shortlist for a hardware project only after checking whether the current platform offering, review process, and organizer requirements suit that particular device.
11. Crowdfundr — creators bringing their own community
The comparison presents Crowdfundr as a possible fit for creators bringing their own community. If you already have likely supporters, compare its campaign operations and costs with other reward options; the available comparison does not establish current terms or audience results.

These options are not substitutes for donation or reward platforms. Lending creates repayment obligations; investment can involve giving up ownership or selling a security and may bring securities-law and reporting obligations. The available material supports distinguishing these models, but it does not establish current legal, tax, return, or investor-eligibility details for the individual services. Review official terms and obtain qualified advice where needed.
12. Kiva — lending rather than donations
Kiva is included among the loan and business-funding candidates. Evaluate it as a lending route, not as a reward campaign: the relevant questions include borrower eligibility and repayment obligations. Confirm the current terms for the location and type of borrower.

WeFunder is listed as a business-investment candidate. A campaign that offers an investment is materially different from a donation drive; understand the instrument, investor eligibility, disclosure, and ongoing obligations before proceeding.
14. Republic — investment candidate
Republic is also surfaced as an investment option. Do not assume that a project can use it simply because it is seeking funds: verify current offering requirements, eligible businesses and investors, and the securities-related terms.
15. Fundable — business funding candidate
Fundable appears in the comparison as a business-funding candidate. The available material does not establish its current pricing, funding structure, or eligibility conditions. Determine whether the current offering is a loan, investment, or another arrangement before comparing it with donation or reward sites.
16. EquityNet — business investment candidate
EquityNet is listed as an investment candidate. Assess it under the rules for the specific offering and the obligations that follow funding, not by the same criteria used for a personal fundraiser or product preorder.
How the four documented fee examples compare
The figures below come from platform-published materials and are limited to the stated country, update date, and example. They are not directly interchangeable: GoFundMe’s example is for a single U.S. donation, Kickstarter’s is a U.S. pledge schedule, Indiegogo’s includes a specific project example, and Patreon’s figure is a plan rate before other charges.
| Platform | Published fee information | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| GoFundMe | 2.9% + $0.30 | GoFundMe Help Center, updated September 30, 2026; stated for a single U.S. donation. Its $50 example leaves $48.25 after transaction fees. Fees vary by country; recurring donations incur an additional 5% fee. |
| Kickstarter | 5% platform fee; U.S. processing of 3% + $0.30 per pledge | Kickstarter fee help page accessed October 4, 2026. Pricing may vary by country. |
| Indiegogo | 5% platform fee; processing is a fixed charge in the project’s currency plus $0.20 per transaction | Indiegogo Help Center, last updated November 4, 2025. Its $10,000/100-transaction example totals $820 in fees and nets $9,180; it is not a universal effective rate. |
| Patreon | 10% standard platform plan | For creator pages published after August 4, 2025, according to Patreon Help Center information updated September 11, 2026 as surfaced in search. Existing creators may have different pricing; other charges apply. |
Current fee information for the other platforms in this guide is not stated in the GoFundMe comparison or the 2026 secondary comparison cited for the candidate list. Do not infer that an unlisted fee means a service is free. Check the provider’s live fee schedule and terms for the total cost of your campaign.
What the platform figures do—and do not—tell you
GoFundMe reports that more than $40 billion has been raised through its technology; that is a company-reported cumulative figure, not a comparable measure of active audience or campaign success. Kickstarter’s creator guide says more than 26 million people have helped fund Kickstarter projects; that is a cumulative reach figure, not a success rate or a count of active backers in a particular category. Neither figure can establish which service is most likely to fund your campaign.
Use the platform’s audience as one consideration, not your entire launch plan. Estimate likely support from your own community, calculate a realistic funding goal, account for fees and delivery costs, and plan how you will communicate before and after funding. Then confirm platform availability, eligibility, terms, and fees immediately before launch, because those details can change.
