15 Shampoos for Wavy Hair, Chosen for Different Needs

A useful shampoo for waves balances cleansing with hydration and weight. These 15 expert-featured picks address fine hair, dryness, frizz, color care and buildup.

The right shampoo for wavy hair cleans the scalp without leaving strands stripped or weighed down. Because a rich formula can flatten fine, loose waves while a drying cleanser can leave hair rough or frizzy, the best choice depends on your hair’s thickness, condition and styling buildup—not a universal “best” label.

These 15 options reflect products and use cases identified in salon and beauty-editor coverage. They are grouped by need, not ranked by a head-to-head test: the available sources do not establish one shampoo as best for everyone, and product availability and formulas can change.

How to choose a shampoo for wavy hair

Start with the problem you want to solve. Fine or loose waves often benefit from lighter cleansing and conditioning; dry or coarse waves may need a more nourishing formula. Color-treated or damaged hair, persistent frizz, and product or mineral buildup call for different considerations.

  • Match weight to hair thickness: richer formulas can feel helpful on dry, coarse hair but may reduce movement in fine or loose waves.
  • Separate regular washing from detox: a clarifying shampoo is for buildup or hard-water deposits, not necessarily a daily cleanser.
  • Check the claim behind the recommendation: a stylist’s suggestion, an editor’s product selection and a manufacturer’s description are not the same as a controlled comparison.
  • Consider color, damage and sensitivities: check the current label and product information for the formula you plan to buy.

Hairstylist Joseph Chase, quoted by Allure, says, “You don’t need to stretch out wash days just because you have textured hair.” Wash when your scalp and hair need it rather than following a fixed schedule based only on having waves.

15 shampoos for wavy hair by need

1. Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Shampoo — overall balance

Allure lists this as an overall option. It is a candidate for readers seeking a balance between cleansing and softness, rather than a product established as the universal winner. Consider your hair’s thickness and how much conditioning weight it tolerates.

2. Joico HydraSplash — fine waves

Allure positions Joico HydraSplash for fine hair. That use case may suit waves that need cleansing and hydration without a particularly rich feel; check the current product label and your own response to the formula.

3. Briogeo Curl Charisma — mixed wave patterns

Allure includes Briogeo Curl Charisma for mixed wave patterns. It is worth considering when different sections of your hair behave differently, though no source establishes that it will define every pattern equally.

V&Co. Wave Babe Wavy Hair Shampoo, Sulfate Free & Paraben Free Hydrating Hair Care with Rice Protein & Peptides for Frizz Control & Wave Definition – 12 fl oz
  • Specifically formulated shampoo for wavy hair – enhances natural definition and bounce
  • Infused with peptides and rice protein to strengthen strands and boost hair health

  • Sulfate free shampoo + free from parabens, phthalates, gluten, and dyes

4. Amika Forget Frizz — frizz and thicker hair

Allure identifies Amika Forget Frizz for frizz and thicker hair. A more nourishing direction may make sense if your strands are substantial or feel dry, but finer waves should weigh the formula’s conditioning feel against their need for movement.

5. Ouai Detox Shampoo — buildup and hard-water deposits

Allure’s detox recommendation addresses product buildup and hard-water minerals. Treat it as a distinct, occasional cleansing option rather than a replacement for a regular gentle shampoo, and follow with a moisturizing treatment as Allure advises.

6. Kérastase Densifique Bain Densité — cosmetic fullness concerns

Allure includes Kérastase Densifique Bain Densité for thinning-related appearance concerns. This is a cosmetic positioning, not evidence that shampoo treats hair loss or changes hair growth; consider it only if its intended feel and current label suit your hair.

7. Shu Uemura Urban Moisture — dry hair

Allure identifies Shu Uemura Urban Moisture for dry hair. Dry or coarse waves may be more receptive to a nourishing option than very fine waves, which can lose lift if a formula feels too heavy.

8. Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair — color-treated or damaged hair

Allure includes Wella Professionals Ultimate Repair for color-treated or damaged hair. Check the current product information and label for the specific formula available to you; the recommendation is not a guarantee of color retention or repair.

9. Eva NYC Take Care Healthy Hair — drugstore-oriented option

Allure includes Eva NYC Take Care Healthy Hair as a drugstore option and associates it with oiliness or damage concerns. Retail prices and stock vary, so compare the current price and ingredients at the retailer rather than relying on older price or rating snapshots.

10. Matrix A Curl Can Dream Weightless Moisture Shampoo — waves in patterns 2A–2C

Matrix markets its A Curl Can Dream Weightless Moisture Shampoo for wave patterns 2A–2C, describing it as lightweight, moisturizing and intended to support root volume; the manufacturer also says it is suitable for color-treated hair. These are brand claims, not independent comparative findings. Matrix distinguishes it from its Gentle Cleansing Shampoo, which it positions for patterns 3A–4C.

11. Wella Nutricurls Shampoo for Waves — lightweight nourishment

Wella’s US store describes Nutricurls Shampoo for Waves as lightweight and nourishing, and says it gently removes impurities and helps define waves. The page lists a size of 8.4 oz / 250 ml and a displayed price of $26; those are store-page details that may change, not a guaranteed current price. Wella also notes that packaging and labeling can differ during updates, so follow the actual product label if it conflicts with the page.

12. Aveda be curly Shampoo — another curl-care candidate

ELLE’s 2024 roundup includes Aveda be curly Shampoo among options for wavy hair. The older article can help identify a candidate, but it should not be used to infer today’s price, rating or availability.

13. LUS Love Ur Curls Shampoo — another wave-focused option

LUS Love Ur Curls Shampoo is also included in ELLE’s 2024 selection. Compare its current product description and ingredients with your cleansing and conditioning preferences; the cited coverage does not establish a head-to-head advantage.

14. OGX Lightweight + Coconut Fine Curls Shampoo — fine or looser waves

ELLE’s 2024 article includes OGX Lightweight + Coconut Fine Curls Shampoo. Its name signals a fine-curl use case, but names alone do not prove how a formula will perform on your hair. Check the current label and retailer information before choosing it.

15. SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo — a richer-care candidate

ELLE’s 2024 list also includes SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo. Consider how much conditioning your waves tolerate: a richer-feeling option may be more appealing for dry or coarse hair than for fine, easily flattened waves. Verify current product details because the cited coverage is not a current stock or price check.

What salon expertise can—and cannot—tell you

Expert recommendations are useful for matching a product to a concern, but they do not amount to a controlled test of every shampoo on this list. Marie Claire quotes celebrity hairstylist Rikke Gash saying, “Wavy hair tends to be naturally more fragile because the bends and curves in the hair fiber create weak points where breakage can happen more easily.” That is an expert observation, not a quantified estimate of breakage risk for every person with waves.

Allure also quotes hairstylist Eric Marshall Wright describing a goal of “helping waves feel soft (not crunchy) and also look more polished without sacrificing movement or volume,” in a discussion of humectants, ceramides, amino acids, proteins and conditioning ingredients. Ingredients and product claims can help narrow a shortlist, but they do not by themselves establish how a shampoo will feel on an individual head of hair.

How to narrow the list before buying

  1. Identify your main need. Choose whether you are prioritizing fine-hair weight, dryness, frizz, color or damage concerns, or occasional buildup removal.
  2. Check the current formula and label. Product names, packaging and formulas can change. Confirm the intended use and ingredients on the product page or package you will actually purchase.
  3. Compare current retailer details. Prices, discounts, ratings and stock are volatile. ELLE’s roundup dates to 2024, so its price and rating information should not be treated as current.
  4. Use a detox product for a detox purpose. If the issue is buildup or hard-water minerals, use a product in that category as directed and pair it with conditioning afterward rather than assuming it should be your everyday shampoo.
