For most people, the 13-inch Apple MacBook Air with the M5 chip is the best lightweight laptop for 2026. It combines low weight, quiet operation, strong everyday performance and a mature software ecosystem. Windows users should start with the Microsoft Surface Laptop, while business travelers should consider the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition.
This list includes clamshell laptops, convertibles, detachable PCs and one portable gaming machine. “Lightweight” does not mean merely thin: complete travel weight, battery efficiency, ports, keyboard quality, repairability, software compatibility and sustained performance also affect the value of a laptop.

The 15 best lightweight laptops for 2026
1. Apple MacBook Air 13-inch, M5 — best overall
The M5 MacBook Air is the default choice for most mobile workers, students and travelers who do not require Windows-only software. Its appeal is the balance of low weight, silent operation, everyday performance, battery efficiency and ecosystem integration.
Best for: Writing, office work, browsing, coding, school and general productivity.
Watch-outs: Memory and storage are generally not user-upgradable. macOS may not support specialized Windows applications, some games or certain enterprise tools. The fanless design is quiet but may not sustain workstation-level workloads as well as a thicker laptop. Check external-monitor support for the exact configuration.
See Apple’s MacBook Air lineup. Current 2026 pricing has changed, so verify the live price and configuration before purchase. Pricing context is available from Tom’s Guide.
2. Apple MacBook Air 15-inch, M5 — best large-screen lightweight laptop
The 15-inch Air provides substantially more workspace for spreadsheets, split-screen research and writing while remaining more portable than most 15- or 16-inch performance laptops.
Best for: Spreadsheet-heavy work, remote work and travelers who want a larger display.
Trade-offs: It is heavier and less compact than the 13-inch Air, and it still lacks the sustained performance and port expansion of a MacBook Pro. A larger screen also does not automatically make a laptop more comfortable on airline trays or small café tables.

3. Microsoft Surface Laptop, 7th Edition — best Windows alternative
The Surface Laptop is a polished Windows option for Microsoft 365, web applications, school and mainstream office work. Its thin design and efficient processor options make it a direct alternative to the MacBook Air.
Important: Snapdragon X configurations run Windows on Arm. Native Arm applications generally provide the best experience, while many x86 applications run through emulation. Older drivers, specialist peripherals, anti-cheat software, virtual machines, legacy utilities and some enterprise VPN or security tools can cause problems.
Other drawbacks: Some configurations have limited ports, and memory and storage may not be upgradeable. Treat battery figures as manufacturer estimates unless an independent test identifies its method. View Surface Laptop configurations.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura Edition — best business laptop
The X1 Carbon is designed around business portability, keyboard-focused productivity, security, manageability and low weight. It is a stronger fit than many consumer ultraportables for consultants, executives and enterprise deployments.
Best for: Frequent business travelers and professionals who need business-class support and docking options.
Check before buying: Display options, memory limits, ports, processor and warranty vary by SKU. Integrated graphics are not intended for demanding 3D or GPU workloads. Premium upgrade configurations can be expensive. Use Lenovo’s official specification reference to identify the exact model.
5. Dell XPS 13, 2026 — best premium compact Windows laptop
The XPS 13 remains a premium compact Windows choice for buyers who prioritize dimensions, materials and portability. It competes most directly with the MacBook Air and Surface Laptop.

Dell’s recent branding changes make the model year especially important. Do not assume that keyboard, function-row or performance characteristics from an older XPS review apply to the 2026 version.

6. ASUS Zenbook A14 — best ultra-light Windows laptop
The Zenbook A14 is aimed at buyers who prioritize carrying weight above almost everything else. Recent coverage reported a sale price of approximately $700 and more than 28 hours in a particular independent test, but both figures apply to a specific configuration and date, not every A14.
Best for: Commuters, airline travelers and students who want a very light Windows clamshell.
Trade-offs: Snapdragon hardware requires an Arm-compatibility check. Very low weight can also mean compromises in rigidity, ports, speakers or sustained cooling. Review ASUS Zenbook models and confirm the exact processor, memory and storage.

7. HP OmniBook Ultra 14 — best high-performance Windows ultraportable
The OmniBook Ultra 14 is a strong Windows alternative for users who want more performance than a basic thin-and-light without moving to a heavy workstation. It suits multitasking, productivity and light creative work.
HP sells several OmniBook families with different processors, displays and form factors. Confirm whether the chosen configuration uses x86 or Arm hardware, and do not transfer specifications from an OmniBook 5, OmniBook 7 or Flip model. Check HP’s current listings.
8. LG gram 14 — best travel-focused ultralight
The LG gram 14 is built around very low weight and a relatively spacious display. It is a sensible choice for frequent flyers, commuters and students who want to minimize backpack weight.
Some gram models trade chassis rigidity or speaker quality for weight. Model naming, displays, processors and warranty coverage vary by market, so confirm the exact configuration and service availability in your country. See LG’s gram range.

The Galaxy Book6 Pro 14 targets buyers who want a lightweight Windows computer with an AMOLED display and Samsung phone, tablet and accessory integration.
Best for: Media consumption, office work and Samsung ecosystem users.
OLED can provide excellent contrast and color, but brightness, content and refresh rate can affect battery life. Some OLED panels use PWM dimming, which may bother flicker-sensitive users. Samsung ecosystem advantages are less meaningful for iPhone owners. Check Samsung’s current Galaxy Book models.

10. Acer Swift Go 14 AI — best value OLED Windows laptop
The Swift Go 14 AI combines OLED display options, modern Intel or Qualcomm processors, useful ports and relatively aggressive pricing. Acer has listed 16GB configurations and advertised a family starting weight of about 1.12kg, but the exact weight and screen depend on the SKU.
A cited Acer US listing showed $999.99 but was out of stock; other Swift Go 14 configurations appeared around $799.99 to $949.99, also with changing availability. Treat those as dated price snapshots, not permanent prices. Avoid 8GB versions for a long-lived primary work laptop unless the discount is substantial.
View Acer specifications and check current stock.
11. Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5x — best affordable Windows-on-Arm option
The IdeaPad Slim 5x offers an affordable route to Windows on Arm, with the potential for strong efficiency and quiet everyday operation. It is suitable for students, office users and web-first workloads.
Compatibility remains the central caveat. Check support for older x86 applications, drivers, specialist software, games, virtual machines and peripherals before buying. Display, webcam and materials may be more basic than on premium laptops, and regional configurations differ. Review Lenovo’s IdeaPad range.
12. Microsoft Surface Pro — best tablet-style lightweight PC
Surface Pro is the best choice here for readers who genuinely want a detachable tablet, touchscreen, pen support and presentation modes rather than a conventional clamshell.
The tablet-only weight is not the ready-to-work weight: the keyboard may be a separate purchase, and the complete setup costs and weighs more. Lap use is less comfortable than with a clamshell, while the kickstand needs desk space. Snapdragon models require the same compatibility checks as other Arm-based PCs.
See Surface Pro configurations and include the keyboard and pen in the total budget.
13. HP OmniBook Ultra Flip 14 — best lightweight 2-in-1
The OmniBook Ultra Flip adds tablet, tent and stand modes without requiring a detachable keyboard. It is useful for presentations, handwritten notes and media consumption.
Hinges, touchscreens and pen digitizers add weight and cost. Touchscreen configurations can also have shorter endurance than comparable clamshells. Confirm whether the pen is included. Check HP’s current Flip configurations.
14. Framework Laptop 13 — best repairable and upgradeable laptop
Framework Laptop 13 is not the lightest model here; its advantage is long-term serviceability. Replaceable and upgradeable components appeal to technical users, Linux users and buyers who want to keep a laptop longer.
The trade-off is a more hands-on ownership experience. Modular ports and replacement parts can cost more, and battery life and performance depend on the selected mainboard. Check Linux support for the exact generation. Shop Framework Laptop 13, review replacement parts and consult Framework’s support documentation.
15. ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 — best lightweight performance laptop
The Zephyrus G14 is the exception to the ultralight theme. Its discrete graphics make it suitable for gaming, 3D work, video editing and GPU-accelerated applications that integrated graphics cannot handle well.
It is heavier, louder and less battery-efficient than the other picks, and serious performance generally requires the charger. Label it a lightweight performance laptop rather than an ultralight. See ASUS’s G14 configurations.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How to choose a lightweight laptop
What counts as lightweight?
- Ultralight: under about 2.5lb.
- Lightweight mainstream: about 2.5lb to 3.2lb.
- Portable large-screen or convertible: about 3.2lb to 4lb.
- Lightweight performance: about 3.5lb to 4.5lb, with the charger considered separately.
Manufacturers may exclude the power adapter, detachable keyboard, stylus, cellular modem or larger battery. Compare a complete Surface Pro setup with a complete clamshell setup, not tablet-only weight with laptop-only weight.
RAM: choose 16GB as the starting point
- 8GB: Basic browsing and light schoolwork only, unless unusually cheap.
- 16GB: The minimum sensible choice for a new general-purpose work laptop in 2026.
- 32GB: Better for development, large spreadsheets, creative software and virtual machines.
- 64GB or more: Usually unnecessary in an ultralight unless the workload is specialized.
Because memory is often soldered, paying for 16GB or 32GB now can be cheaper than replacing the laptop later.
Storage: 512GB is the practical minimum
Choose 512GB for a primary work laptop and 1TB for local photo libraries, media, creative projects or long ownership. A 256GB drive works for cloud-first users or a low-cost secondary machine, but external SSDs add cost, cables and security considerations.
Windows on Arm: efficient, but not universally compatible
Snapdragon laptops can be attractive for efficiency and quiet operation. Native Arm applications usually work best, while many x86 applications rely on emulation. Compatibility risks are higher with old drivers, specialized peripherals, anti-cheat games, virtual machines, legacy utilities and enterprise VPN or security tools. Check the software developer’s documentation before buying.
OLED versus IPS
OLED provides strong contrast and attractive color, but can be glossy, use more power in some workloads and employ PWM dimming. Burn-in or image retention may also matter for static work. A low-power IPS or LCD panel can deliver better endurance in some configurations. Manufacturer color and resolution claims do not establish brightness uniformity, calibration or flicker behavior.
Ports matter more when traveling
Look for USB-C charging, at least two USB-C ports, USB-A if you use older accessories, HDMI or DisplayPort support, a headphone jack, a card reader when importing photos, current Wi-Fi and dock compatibility. A USB-C-only laptop may be excellent for a minimalist traveler but expensive and inconvenient for presentations, cameras, wired networking and office equipment.
Battery claims need context
“Up to” figures are manufacturer estimates. Independent laboratory results are more useful but depend on brightness, browser, video, workload and power mode. Real-world productivity varies further. Do not compare a manufacturer’s 28-hour claim directly with a third-party 12-hour mixed-use result as though they used the same test.
Fans, webcams and chargers
Fanless designs are silent for ordinary work, while active cooling can sustain performance better. Any thin fan may become audible during compiling, exports, large data processing or gaming.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor remote work, assess camera resolution, low-light quality, microphone noise reduction, privacy shutter and conferencing compatibility. “AI camera” branding is not independent evidence of image quality. Also weigh the charger: a 2.5lb laptop with a large 100W adapter may be less convenient than a slightly heavier laptop with a compact USB-C charger.
Which operating system should you choose?
Choose macOS when
You value quiet operation, battery efficiency, build quality and Apple ecosystem integration, and your required applications run natively or acceptably on macOS. Avoid it when you need Windows-only enterprise tools, broad PC game compatibility or user-upgradable memory and storage.
Choose Intel or AMD Windows when
You need the broadest software, driver, peripheral and gaming compatibility, touchscreen or convertible designs, business-specific features or a wider selection of ports and configurations.
Choose Windows on Arm when
Your work is primarily browser-based, Microsoft 365-based or supported by native Arm applications, and you prioritize efficiency and quiet operation over guaranteed legacy compatibility.
