The 14 options below are a starting shortlist, not a ranking or endorsement. Their formats, dates, costs and admissions details are not directly comparable, so confirm the exact cohort’s terms with each provider before applying or paying a deposit.
Choose the kind of year before choosing a provider
Start with what your graduate wants to do day to day. A student seeking structured service may prefer a residential team program; someone drawn to wilderness skills may look at an expedition; and a graduate hoping to explore another culture should compare itineraries, language expectations and supervision. A gap year is more likely to be useful when its activities, demands and support match the student’s goals and needs.

Check dates, eligibility and total cost for the exact cohort
A program name is not enough to build a budget or decide whether a student qualifies. Details can vary by intake, and a displayed tuition figure may not include the full cost of participation.
- Dates and duration: Confirm application deadlines, arrival and departure dates, total length and what happens if a cohort is full or dates change.
- Eligibility and fit: Check age limits, high-school completion requirements, prerequisites, physical demands, language expectations and whether the provider can accommodate the student’s support needs.
- All-in cost: Ask for tuition and a written list of exclusions. Include travel to and from the program, visas, insurance, gear, meals, incidentals, deposits and possible additional fees. Review payment schedules and refund rules before committing.
- Financial support: Ask whether scholarships, payment plans, work opportunities, service stipends or education awards apply to this program and intake, and what conditions govern them.
- Learning and credit: Ask what skills, credentials or academic credit a participant can earn and how learning is documented. A provider’s credit claim does not guarantee that a receiving college will accept credits toward a particular degree.
- Safety and support: Ask about staff qualifications, group size, emergency communications and evacuation plans, medical screening, insurance, safeguarding, incident reporting and local partners. An accreditation listing alone does not establish that a specific course addresses every risk or individual need.
- Next-step transition: Find out whether the program includes reflection, advising or a practical plan for moving toward college, work, service or another goal.
What the current published examples do—and do not—show
Some providers publish details for a specific upcoming cohort; those figures should not be treated as standing prices or guarantees of availability.
| Example | Published cohort details | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Outward Bound Blue Ridge Mountains to Florida & Patagonia Leadership Semester | The provider page lists 72 days for ages 18–25, September 25–December 5, 2026, a displayed cost of $16,214 (with $18,015 also shown), and waitlist status at the time reviewed. The outline includes wilderness training, service and first-aid certification. | Recheck dates, availability, the applicable price and what it includes with Outward Bound. Ask about the specific course’s credit and 529 eligibility. |
| Alzar Gap Patagonia Exchange | Alzar lists a 79-day fall session for ages 18–22, September 23–December 13, 2026. Tuition covers room and board and much technical equipment, but not all travel and incidentals. | Confirm current availability, exclusions, eligible credit and transferability with the provider and receiving college. |
| Camp Elim GAP Year | Camp Elim lists a 2026–27 price of $6,200 covering tuition, books, room and board, and stated travel for college visits and a Christian camping conference. Scholarships may be available; dual-credit options have additional charges. | Confirm the complete family cost, scholarship conditions, travel coverage and extra charges for any chosen credit option. |
These are different program types and their published amounts do not form an apples-to-apples price comparison. The available details do not establish comparable full costs, aid, eligibility or safety practices across all 14 options.
Use accreditation and outcome claims carefully
The Association for Experiential Education roster lists NOLS and several Outward Bound schools with initial accreditation years. That is evidence of a listing and accreditation status on the roster—not proof that every course is appropriate for a particular graduate or that every safety need is covered. Ask what the accreditation applies to and request course-specific information.
Rank #3
Outward Bound’s course page says participants will “become a leader, earn a Wilderness First Aid certification, complete service projects, and build lifelong friendships.” That is the provider’s description of its course, not an independently validated outcome for every participant. Likewise, do not use general provider growth or perseverance figures as proof that one program will deliver a specific result for an individual student.

Some outdoor options involve backpacking, but equipment needs vary and a provider may supply or specify technical gear. Before buying a backpack or other major equipment, request the selected program’s current gear list and ask what is provided, what must be rented and what students should bring. A sailing voyage, service term or cultural program may have a very different packing list.
