Its prices belong to that moment—not to 2026: the article reported a U.S. grocery average of $4.25 per dozen and a California average of $7.37.
What the 2023 egg-price memes were reacting to
Thomas Germain’s Gizmodo slideshow reported that the U.S. grocery average had reached $4.25 per dozen, a 120% year-over-year increase, and cited a California average of $7.37 per dozen. Those are figures the article reported in January 2023, not current price quotes.
Gizmodo described pandemic-era supply-chain and worker shortages as pressures on the market, while identifying avian flu as the larger contributor to the spike. That is the article’s account of the 2023 crisis, not an explanation of egg prices today.
How the slideshow found humor in sticker shock
The jokes turned a basic grocery staple into an apparent luxury: eggs were scarce, costly and worthy of dramatic treatment. Several captions relied on egg puns or familiar movie and television references, including “Eggs Are Forever,” “Tony Eggtana” and “Book’em Danno.” Another caption quipped, “You had me at ‘Sunny side up.’”

- I miss my regular egg prices.

The luxury joke also sharpened the contrast between an everyday food and its suddenly painful price tag. Germain wrote, “You’re better off buying a living chicken”—a punchline about the sticker shock, not practical financial or poultry advice.
One account behind an egg-themed post
One slideshow item credited @_bythedozen__ and noted that the account had been posting egg and chicken content for almost a year by the time the slideshow appeared. Its caption joked, “All I have in this world is my eggs and my word, and I don’t break ‘em for no one!”

Why the date matters
The slideshow is a snapshot of how people joked about a specific cost-of-living moment in early 2023. Its price figures and explanation of the spike should be read in that historical context; they do not establish what eggs cost or why prices move in October 2026.
