The best Etsy alternative depends on whether you need marketplace discovery, a store you control, or access to retail buyers. Marketplaces may put your products in front of shoppers already browsing; an independent store gives you more control over branding and the customer relationship, but you must bring the traffic. No platform can guarantee that switching will increase sales.
Here are 12 options to compare, from handmade marketplaces to storefront builders and wholesale. Treat them as a shortlist, not a universal ranking: fees, eligibility, features, and availability vary by country and can change. Before moving, compare your actual costs and decide whether a second channel would complement Etsy rather than replace it.
How to choose an Etsy alternative
Start with the kind of selling channel you want. A marketplace can provide access to its existing shoppers, but it sets rules and charges fees. A seller-owned storefront lets you shape the brand and customer experience more directly, but it does not automatically bring visitors. Shopify makes this distinction in its Etsy alternatives guide.
- Choose a marketplace if you want to list alongside other sellers and your products fit its audience and rules.
- Choose a storefront builder if you want a branded website and are prepared to attract customers through marketing, search, social media, or other channels.
- Consider wholesale if you can fulfill retailer orders and make sense of the different order sizes and margins.
- Consider more than one channel if you can keep inventory, pricing, and fulfillment coordinated. A new channel can add work as well as reach.
Compare total costs rather than a single advertised rate. Depending on the platform and seller location, costs can include a subscription, listing fees, transaction or referral fees, payment processing, advertising, and fulfillment. The relevant amount depends on your typical order value, sales volume, unsold listings, and use of paid services.

For example, Shopify’s August 2026 comparison gives a US illustration for a $35 pre-tax order: it estimates a $5.25 Amazon Handmade referral fee versus $3.78 in listed Etsy fees under its stated assumptions. That is not a universal fee ranking: geography, listing turnover, advertising, payment charges, and other costs can change the result. The same comparison lists US Etsy fees of $0.20 per listing, a 6.5% transaction fee, payment-processing charges, and possible Offsite Ads fees. Check current platform terms for your location before deciding. Shopify’s Amazon Handmade and Etsy comparison is a dated commercial guide, not a substitute for current seller terms.
12 Etsy alternatives to consider
The options below serve different purposes; they are not interchangeable. The best fit turns on your product, location, audience, and capacity to manage a shop or additional sales channel.
1. Shopify: a branded storefront you operate
Shopify is for sellers who want an independent online store and room to build a brand or sell across channels. Unlike a marketplace listing, a standalone Shopify store does not inherently deliver marketplace discovery: you need a plan to bring visitors. Budget for the subscription and applicable payment or transaction costs, and compare the features and terms available in your country. Shopify’s guide describes the platform as an option for sellers seeking more control and multichannel growth. Shopify’s Etsy alternatives guide
2. Big Cartel: a small catalog for artists
Big Cartel is aimed at artists and sellers with relatively small catalogs who want a straightforward independent shop. Shopify’s guide says its free tier supports up to five products; confirm the current limit and plan terms before building your catalog around it. As with other standalone stores, you are responsible for attracting shoppers.

- 【What You Will Receive】You will receive 50 pieces of watercolor paper bulk, which is enough for your daily use and replacement, can meet your various painting needs, and can also be shared with your kids, friends and family.
- 【Suitable Size】The size of the water color paper is 4 x 6 inches, and the weight of the paper is 160gsm, which is very suitable for making wedding invitations.
- 【Traditional Crafts】Deckled edge paper is handmade using cold pressing technology and has a rough texture. The paper is thick, textured and durable, which can add a vintage touch to your creations.
- 【Wide Use】4 x 6 watercolor paper is perfect for making wedding invitations, birthday or holiday cards, thank you cards, Christmas cards, Valentine's Day cards, etc.
- 【Craft Decoration】Handmade paper can also be given as a gift to people who like to draw, such as children, students, artists, etc., which can inspire their creativity and imagination and show their painting talent. You can also make invitations in collage, watercolor and vintage painting styles.
3. Squarespace: a design-led ecommerce site
Squarespace can suit a seller whose brand depends on a polished, visual website as well as online sales. Compare its ecommerce tools and subscription cost with the features you actually need, including catalog and order-management requirements. A design-led site still needs a way to reach potential customers.
4. Wix: a flexible independent shop
Wix offers a website-building route for sellers who want a branded shop rather than relying solely on a marketplace. The added control comes with responsibility for site setup, upkeep, and marketing. Check that the ecommerce functions and plan available in your region fit your inventory and sales workflow.
5. Ecwid by Lightspeed: add a shop to an existing presence
Ecwid can be relevant if you already have a website or social presence and want to add ecommerce rather than start with a separate marketplace. Product limits and paid-plan features matter, especially if you intend to list the same goods on Etsy and other channels. Work out how orders and inventory will stay consistent before adding another storefront.
6. IndieMade: an artist-oriented website
IndieMade is designed around artists and creative businesses, with features that can include a gallery, events, blog, and inventory tools. Shopify’s guide notes limited product-variant options, so check whether you can represent your sizes, colors, or other variations before committing.

7. Bonanza: a marketplace for unique goods
Bonanza is a marketplace option for categories that can include art, crafts, and collectibles. It retains marketplace fees and rules rather than giving you the same control as an independent website. Its negotiation feature may affect how you price items, so account for the possibility of offers when setting margins.
8. Amazon Handmade: a marketplace with an approval process
Amazon Handmade may suit makers whose products qualify and who want to list within Amazon’s marketplace. Sellers must apply, and approved handmade goods are subject to Handmade’s eligibility requirements. Amazon’s audience does not mean every eligible product will sell, and marketplace reach should not be confused with a guaranteed sales lift.
As a dated US example, Shopify’s August 2026 comparison lists a $39.99 monthly charge for the first month, waived after that first month for approved Handmade sellers, and a referral fee of 15% or $0.30 per shipped unit, whichever is greater. These figures are geography- and date-sensitive; verify current charges and eligibility in Amazon Seller Central before applying. Shopify’s comparison provides the dated context, while Amazon’s current seller terms should govern your decision.
9. WooCommerce: a flexible WordPress-based store
WooCommerce is an option for sellers who want to build a store using WordPress and have more flexibility over the site. That flexibility also means taking responsibility for hosting, setup, maintenance, payment configuration, and bringing in traffic. Consider whether you have the time or support to manage those jobs alongside making and shipping products.

10. eBay: a broad marketplace for vintage or mixed inventory
eBay can be a fit for sellers whose inventory includes vintage items or a mix of product types. It is a broad marketplace, not a handmade-only destination, so its browsing audience and listing environment differ from Etsy’s. Review the rules and fees for the specific categories and locations where you plan to sell.
11. Folksy: a UK-focused handmade marketplace
Folksy is worth evaluating if you are in the UK or targeting UK shoppers for handmade goods. Its geographic focus makes location and audience fit especially important. Confirm that it currently accepts sellers from your country and check its current charges and terms before listing.
12. Faire: wholesale to retailers
Faire is a wholesale route for makers who can supply retail shops. It differs from selling individual items directly to consumers: order quantities, pricing, margins, and fulfillment expectations may be different. Consider it when your production capacity and wholesale economics work, not simply as another consumer marketplace.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Marketplace or independent store: the practical trade-off
A marketplace and a seller-owned site solve different problems. Etsy reported 86.5 million active buyers at the end of 2025, a figure Shopify attributes to Etsy investor material in its June 2026 guide. That figure describes Etsy’s marketplace, not the audience or sales potential of any alternative. An independent store can give you more say over presentation and customer experience, but it does not come with an equivalent built-in audience.

Accordingly, a move is not automatically a growth strategy. The comparison sources are platform guides, not controlled studies showing that switching increases a seller’s revenue. A seller testimonial about marketplace exposure is an individual account, not evidence of a typical outcome. Evaluate a channel against your own product, audience, pricing, marketing, and ability to fulfill orders.
Should you leave Etsy or add another channel?
You do not have to treat this as an all-or-nothing decision. A second channel can test a different audience or give your brand a dedicated destination while Etsy continues to provide marketplace discovery. But it also creates operational work: listings, stock levels, prices, shipping details, and order handling need to stay aligned.
- Test before moving everything. Start with a manageable selection and measure orders, costs, and workload on the new channel.
- Plan inventory synchronization. Decide how you will prevent selling the same one-off item twice and how quickly stock changes will appear across channels.
- Keep channel economics separate. Track fees, advertising, packaging or fulfillment costs, and time by channel so a higher order count is not mistaken for higher profit.
- Check rules and customer-data obligations. Follow each platform’s terms and applicable privacy requirements when communicating with customers or moving business records.
- Set a review point. Compare results after you have enough activity to assess the channel, then expand, adjust, or close it based on your own numbers.
Craftybase’s guide discusses alternatives that include wholesale and social commerce as well as marketplaces, but availability and current terms for any channel should be checked directly. Craftybase’s overview and Podbase’s alternatives overview offer additional lists; their commercial context is worth keeping in mind when assessing recommendations.
Quick Recap
A quick decision checklist
- Product fit: Are your goods handmade, vintage, collectible, or suited to wholesale? Does the platform accept your category?
- Location: Can you sell from your country, accept payments, and ship economically to the customers you want?
- Discovery: Does the platform have relevant marketplace browsing, or will you need to attract nearly all visitors yourself?
- True cost: What do subscription, listing, transaction or referral, payment processing, advertising, and fulfillment add up to for your typical order and monthly volume?
- Control: How much do branding, site ownership, customer relationships, and platform rules matter to your business?
- Operations: Can you manage another catalog, stock synchronization, customer service, and fulfillment without disrupting current sales?
- Evidence: Are you making the decision from your own results and costs rather than assuming that a platform’s audience guarantees sales?
