Best Craigslist alternatives for selling locally
1. Facebook Marketplace: the broadest all-purpose reach
Facebook Marketplace is the strongest first listing for many ordinary household sales. Meta says Marketplace supports vehicles, home décor, fashion, electronics and shipped items. Facebook also allows selling through buy-and-sell groups or a Page, with shipping features depending on location.
Meta reported 430 million items and 44 million vehicles listed globally each month, and said one in three young adults in the United States uses Marketplace daily. Those are Meta’s own 2026 company-reported figures, not an independent industry estimate.

#1 Best Overall
- Choose it when you want nearby buyers and the option to arrange pickup.
- Use clear photos, a precise condition description and a realistic pickup area.
- Check the payment and shipping options shown in your location before promising either one.
2. OfferUp: mobile-first U.S. local selling
OfferUp is designed for browsing, posting, chat and local transactions, with designated safe-meetup locations in supported areas. Full access is currently limited to the United States.
OfferUp says in-person transactions do not incur a commission. Promotions, extra listings and some shipped transactions may carry fees, so review the charge shown before publishing or accepting shipment.
3. Nextdoor: neighborhood-scale sales
Nextdoor can work well when the buyer is likely to live nearby and wants a quick pickup. Its audience density, selling features and moderation experience depend on the neighborhood, so it is not equally useful in every ZIP code. Treat it as a local-community channel rather than a national marketplace.

4. eBay: national reach and collectibles
eBay is a better fit than a local classified when an item has specialist demand or is worth shipping. It is commonly listed among mainstream online selling marketplaces, including by the Better Business Bureau.
Recommended Free Tools
Before listing, calculate the complete cost: seller fees, packing materials, postage, expected handling time and the effect of buyer-protection rules on a disputed transaction. Current fee schedules and category rules can change, so check eBay’s terms for your country and category.
Rank #2
5. Mercari: small shippable items and clothing
Mercari is oriented toward compact goods that can be photographed, packed and mailed, including clothing. The Better Business Bureau lists it among online marketplace options.
Confirm current seller fees, shipping labels, payout timing and availability where you live. Those terms are changeable, and the most convenient workflow may differ by item size and destination.
6. Poshmark: fashion and accessories
Poshmark is designed for clothing, shoes, bags and accessories rather than a mixed household clear-out. Fashion-focused discovery can make it easier to reach the right shoppers than a general classified.

7. Swappa: used phones, tablets and consumer tech
Swappa is a category-focused option for used phones, tablets and other consumer electronics. Its listing process emphasizes device condition and transaction requirements, which can help buyers compare like-for-like listings.
Rank #3
Read the current condition standards, payment-protection rules and shipping obligations before listing. A device that cannot meet the platform’s documentation or condition rules may be better sold locally.
8. Etsy: handmade, vintage and craft goods
Etsy makes sense when what you sell is handmade, designed by you, vintage or a craft supply. It is not an efficient replacement for Craigslist if you are clearing out ordinary furniture, appliances or miscellaneous household items.
Estimate listing, transaction and payment costs under Etsy’s current terms, and make sure the item qualifies for the category before investing time in photographs and descriptions.
Best Craigslist alternatives for finding a job
9. Indeed: the broad job-search workflow
Indeed is the broadest replacement for scanning classified job ads. Its tools include job search and applications, job alerts, application tracking, résumé updates and employer messaging. Listings may also show labels, match information, company summaries and an estimated commute.
Use filters for location, remote or on-site work, employment type and pay when available. Keep a record of the exact job description and employer domain for every application; a later message should match the role you actually applied for.
Rank #4
10. LinkedIn Jobs: professional roles plus networking
LinkedIn Jobs combines job listings with a professional profile and network. Its recommendations can use preferred titles, locations, remote, hybrid or on-site settings, employment type and information in your profile. Job alerts are available.
Keep your experience, education, skills and location current so recommendations do not reflect an outdated career target. LinkedIn is especially useful when a referral, recruiter conversation or company follow-up matters as much as the initial application.
Dating alternatives to Craigslist personals
If your goal is dating or casual sex, use a dedicated dating service rather than treating a classified listing as a promise of a hookup. Compare the local user base, profile visibility, messaging rules, blocking and reporting tools, identity signals and privacy settings.
11. Tinder: large mainstream app with profile matching
Tinder uses profiles and matching to start conversations. It can serve people seeking dates or casual connections, but the app cannot guarantee chemistry, a relationship or sex. State your intentions honestly and respect a match’s boundaries.
12. Bumble: app-based dating with safety controls
Bumble is an app-based dating alternative with profile and matching mechanics. Check which messaging, visibility and verification features are available in your country and age group, then use its block and report controls when a conversation becomes unsafe or unwanted.

13. Hinge: profile-led matching
Hinge is another mainstream app-based dating platform. Its profile prompts can give conversations more context than a one-line classified ad, but the quality of matches still depends on your local user base and how specifically you describe what you want.
14. Facebook Dating: dating inside Facebook’s ecosystem
Facebook Dating is available only in supported countries and to eligible users. Meta also documents a free Facebook Verified identity badge where available; the check uses a selfie-based process. Availability, age requirements and safety features can change, so confirm what your account and country support.

Local pickup versus shipping
Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp and Nextdoor are usually most useful when the buyer can collect the item. eBay and Mercari make more sense when shipping is practical and demand may exist outside your city. Poshmark, Swappa and Etsy are specialized versions of the shipping model.
Audience and category fit
A general platform gives you more potential viewers but also more irrelevant messages. Category marketplaces trade some reach for shoppers who already understand fashion, electronics or handmade goods. Choose the narrowest platform that still has enough active buyers in your area.

For Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp in-person sales and Nextdoor, the applicable fees and features depend on the transaction method and location; no single universal amount is established here. eBay, Mercari, Poshmark, Swappa and Etsy each have their own current fee, shipping and payment rules. Check the platform’s terms immediately before listing rather than relying on an old fee chart.
Safety rules for selling, job hunting and dating
Online selling
- Keep payment and messaging in the platform’s official flow. OfferUp specifically warns against external payment or verification links.
- The Federal Trade Commission warns about fake-payment schemes and requests for Google Voice verification codes. Never send a code that was delivered to your phone to a stranger.
- For a local exchange, use a public or designated safe-meetup location, avoid inviting a stranger into your home when possible and tell someone where you are going.
- Do not release an item because you received a screenshot, email or text claiming payment. Confirm the funds in your own account or in the platform’s transaction screen.
Job applications
- Check that recruiter messages come from a legitimate employer domain, not a look-alike address.
- Compare the offer with the job you actually applied for. Be skeptical of unusually high pay, urgent requests for money or requests to buy equipment or gift cards.
- Use the employer’s official careers page to verify the role when a listing or message seems inconsistent.
Dating and first meetings
- Use the app’s reporting and blocking tools for harassment, coercion, impersonation or requests for money.
- Keep early conversations on-platform until you have enough trust to choose otherwise; never share passwords, one-time codes or financial-account details.
- Meet in a busy public place, arrange your own transport and tell a friend your plans. Leave if the person ignores a boundary.
A practical way to choose your Craigslist replacement
- Define the transaction. Decide whether you need local pickup, shipping, a job application workflow or a dating service.
- Match the category. Use Poshmark for fashion, Swappa for consumer tech and Etsy for handmade or vintage goods; use a general marketplace for mixed household items.
- Check geography and eligibility. OfferUp’s full access is U.S.-only, while dating and Facebook Dating features can vary by country and age.
- Price the total effort. Include fees, packing, postage, travel to a meetup, response time and the risk of a return or payment dispute.
- Use trust controls before publishing. Review identity signals, reporting tools, payment protection and the platform’s current safety guidance.
- Post one accurate listing. State condition, location, availability, price and what is included. For jobs, tailor your résumé; for dating, state your intentions without making promises.
The strongest general-purpose path is Facebook Marketplace for local goods, eBay or Mercari for shippable items, Indeed for broad job searches and LinkedIn Jobs for professional work. Dating requires a separate decision: choose the app with the right local audience and safety controls, not a promise of a particular outcome.
