There is no single best construction accounting system for every contractor. The right choice depends on how deeply you need to track job costs, handle progress billing and retainage, meet payroll and reporting requirements, manage multiple companies, and connect accounting with field operations. This guide compares 11 options by their likely role and the workflows buyers should verify—not by a universal ranking or hands-on test.

How to choose construction accounting software

Start with the work your finance and project teams must complete, not with a feature checklist. A contractor doing straightforward bookkeeping has different needs from a firm managing complex projects, multiple entities, subcontract commitments, or specialized payroll obligations. Company size is a useful starting point, but transaction volume, project mix, accounting-team capacity, and implementation resources matter too.

Test job costing from source transaction to forecast

Ask the vendor to demonstrate how labor, materials, equipment, and subcontract commitments are assigned to projects and cost codes. Then follow those costs into budget-to-actual reporting and the forecast or work-in-progress (WIP) views your team uses. A product name or feature label is not proof that the workflow will match your chart of accounts and project controls.

Check billing and compliance requirements

List the billing methods and obligations your contracts require, including progress billing, AIA-style forms, retainage, change orders, certified payroll, and prevailing-wage reporting. Confirm which functions are included in the proposed product, which require an add-on, and which depend on an integration. A basic bookkeeping system may be insufficient for these workflows unless a verified add-on fills the gap.

Decide where accounting ends and project operations begin

Accounting systems and construction project platforms overlap, but they are not interchangeable by default. Decide whether you need the ledger and job-cost controls in one system, or an accounting product connected to separate field and project software. Ask the vendors to show how project budgets, commitments, costs, approvals, and payment information move between systems—and which team owns corrections when data does not match.

Budget for the whole implementation

Compare more than the subscription. Request a written estimate covering the required users and modules, data conversion, implementation, training, integrations, and ongoing administration. Confirm deployment and hosting options, migration support, and who will maintain the system after launch. Published third-party prices are useful for orientation, not a substitute for a current vendor quote.

11 construction accounting software options

The products below are organized by role and likely fit, not ranked from best to worst. The comparison draws on product documentation and published comparison sources; it is not a report of independent head-to-head testing. Some entries are accounting systems or ERPs, while others are project and field platforms that may be used alongside a separate accounting ledger.

Product Role and likely fit What to verify before choosing
QuickBooks Online General small-business accounting with project features and basic job costing; a possible starting point for a smaller contractor with lighter requirements. Whether the specific plan and any add-ons cover your job-cost detail, AIA-style billing, certified payroll, and WIP reporting.
Sage 100 Contractor Contractor-focused accounting with job costing tied to accounting workflows; worth evaluating for a contractor needing a construction-specific system. Required modules, deployment, integrations, and the complete vendor or authorized-partner quote.
Sage Intacct Construction Cloud construction accounting for firms that need project-cost controls, financial workflows, and multi-entity capabilities. How the proposed configuration handles your reporting and approval structure, and which integrations and services are included.
Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate An ERP option appearing in comparisons for established mid-to-large construction businesses. Current product naming, deployment, migration path, included features, and implementation requirements.
FOUNDATION A construction accounting option positioned in a mid-size contractor context by a third-party comparison. Payroll, WIP, billing, and reporting in a workflow demonstration, as well as the configuration and quote suited to your business.
Viewpoint Vista An option included in comparisons for established or mid-to-large construction businesses. Current branding, hosting choices, feature packaging, integrations, and the scale of implementation support required.
CMiC A construction ERP candidate for larger or more operationally complex firms. End-to-end workflows, implementation scope, customer references relevant to your project mix, and current pricing.
Acumatica Construction Edition A cloud-oriented option for general and specialty contractors. Project accounting depth, required extensions, integrations, and whether the implementation partner is a good fit.
Jonas Premier A construction software candidate included in current comparison lists. Business.org named it its overall choice under that publisher’s own method, which weighed pricing, ease of use, accounting capabilities, and construction-specific tools. Whether the workflows, pricing, and implementation match your requirements; one publisher’s ranking is not a consensus result.
Buildertrend A construction platform included as a possible fit, particularly for smaller or collaborative businesses. Which accounting requirements it handles itself and which depend on a connected accounting system or integration.
Procore A project and field operations platform that can complement construction accounting software; it is not automatically a replacement for an accounting ledger. How project and financial workflows connect to your accounting system, including the handoff for costs, commitments, forecasts, and payment processes.

What stands out about the systems

QuickBooks Online: a simpler accounting starting point

QuickBooks Online offers general small-business accounting with project features and basic job costing. Dupple’s June 2026 comparison describes it as a possible fit for smaller contractors with lighter needs, but says the plan it reviewed lacked native AIA billing, certified payroll, and WIP schedules. Verify the current plan and any add-ons against your contract and reporting requirements rather than assuming those workflows are included.

Sage 100 Contractor: contractor-focused job costing

TechnologyAdvice describes Sage 100 Contractor as tying contractor-focused job costing to accounting workflows. Confirm which modules are needed for your specific jobs and obligations, and request current details on deployment, integrations, and implementation from Sage or an authorized partner.

Sage Intacct Construction: financial control and multi-entity workflows

Sage’s product materials describe project-cost controls, accounts payable and receivable automation, cash management, multi-entity financials, change-order management, dashboards, and cloud access. Sage also describes an open API and names Procore, Autodesk, and Timberscan among its ecosystem integrations. These are vendor-described capabilities; ask for a demonstration using your own accounting structure and the systems you expect to connect.

Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate: validate the current product path

ERP Research includes Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate among options for established mid-to-large firms. Because product names, deployment choices, and migration paths can change, confirm current details with the vendor before shortlisting it.

FOUNDATION and Viewpoint Vista: evaluate the fit in a live workflow

FOUNDATION appears in Dupple and iTechGuides comparisons, with Dupple placing it in a mid-size contractor context. Viewpoint Vista appears in iTechGuides and ERP Research comparisons for established or mid-to-large businesses. For either system, use a tailored demonstration to test billing, payroll, WIP, reporting, and the implementation approach relevant to your company.

CMiC: examine the implementation as closely as the feature set

CMiC appears in several comparison lists as an ERP option for larger or more complex firms. Request references from businesses with a similar project mix and complexity, and have the vendor walk through your real approval, cost, and reporting workflows before comparing proposals.

Rank #4

Acumatica Construction Edition: check extensions and partner capability

ERP Research includes Acumatica Construction Edition among cloud-first options for general and specialty contractors. Ask how much of your required project-accounting workflow is included, whether extensions or integrations are needed, and what the implementation partner will configure and support.

Jonas Premier: treat editorial awards as one input

Business.org selected Jonas Premier as its overall choice using its own evaluation method, which considered pricing, ease of use, accounting capabilities, and construction-specific tools. That is a publisher’s selection, not a universal finding. Use the same requirements and demonstration script for Jonas Premier as for the other systems you consider.

Buildertrend: establish the accounting boundary

Dupple and Business.org include Buildertrend among possible choices, especially in the context of smaller or collaborative construction businesses. Determine whether your required accounting workflows are native or handled through an integration, and decide which system will be the authoritative ledger.

Procore: connect project operations to the ledger

Sage describes Procore as supporting project and field workflows that include tasks, documents, schedules, safety and quality, budgets, commitments, forecasts, and payment processes. Sage presents Procore alongside Sage Intacct Construction as part of a connected finance-and-field approach. Evaluate it as a project platform connected to accounting, not as an automatic substitute for a construction accounting ledger.

What published prices can—and cannot—tell you

Dupple reported the following figures as of June 2026. They are third-party reported prices, not verified current vendor quotes, and may not reflect the users, modules, services, or integrations your business needs.

Product and published figure Basis and qualification
QuickBooks Online Plus: $115 per month Dupple-reported price as of June 2026; verify the current plan and any construction-specific add-ons with the vendor.
Sage 100 Contractor: approximately $115–$200 per user per month Dupple-reported approximate range as of June 2026; it is not a current vendor quote.
FOUNDATION: approximately $500–$1,500+ per month Dupple-reported estimate as of June 2026; it is not a vendor list price or quote.

The cited comparisons describe enterprise pricing as commonly quote-based or customized. For any product, request a proposal that separates subscription and modules from implementation, conversion, training, integration, and support costs.

A practical shortlist and demo process

  1. Write down your non-negotiables. Identify project and cost-code structure, labor and subcontract tracking, billing formats, retainage, payroll and wage rules, WIP reporting, entity structure, approvals, and required field connections.
  2. Separate must-haves from integrations. For each requirement, ask whether it is included in the product, available as an add-on, or dependent on another system. Record the system that owns the data and the person responsible for resolving discrepancies.
  3. Shortlist by operating complexity. Consider smaller-business accounting options when requirements are light; compare contractor-focused accounting and mid-market systems as job-costing, reporting, and payroll needs grow; evaluate ERP and connected project platforms when multiple entities or complex field workflows are central. These are directional categories, not hard eligibility thresholds.
  4. Give each vendor the same scenario. Ask the vendor to enter a representative project budget, post labor, material, equipment, and subcontract costs, process a change, produce a progress bill with retainage if applicable, and show budget-to-actual and forecast or WIP reporting.
  5. Test data exchange and controls. Include the field or project system in the demo if you plan to connect one. Check approvals, audit visibility, duplicate handling, and how corrections are reflected in both systems.
  6. Compare complete implementation proposals. Include data migration, training, configuration, integrations, ongoing administration, and the staff time your company must supply—not just the subscription.
  7. Check customer fit before signing. Ask for references from contractors with comparable project types, payroll needs, accounting structure, and implementation scope.

Why construction firms are evaluating technology

Intuit QuickBooks’ 2026 report describes a survey of 1,000 construction decision-makers in the United States. In that vendor-published survey, 61% of high-growth firms said they had fully embraced digital tools to manage operations, finances, projects, and client interactions, compared with 28% of the full sample. The report also said 55% of high-growth firms had highly automated finance functions, versus 44% of the total sample; 42% of firms reported difficulty finding workers; and 91% of construction leaders agreed technology could help address the labor gap.

These survey results provide context for digitization and labor pressure, not evidence that any one accounting product causes better financial outcomes. Intuit’s report also promotes QuickBooks Online Advanced and its construction module, so product-specific claims in that report should be read in light of its vendor source.
