There is no single best freelance website for everyone. The right choice depends on your skill, experience, location, preferred way of finding clients, need for payment protection, and tolerance for commissions or subscriptions.
For most U.S.-based generalists, a practical starting combination is Upwork plus LinkedIn or Contra: Upwork provides a large proposal-based marketplace, while LinkedIn and Contra are better suited to professional positioning and direct-client leads. A beginner with a clearly defined service may prefer Fiverr; a senior specialist can consider Toptal; and translators, publishing professionals, and designers may get better results from niche platforms.

| Platform | Best for | How you find work | Freelancer cost | Payment protection | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upwork | Most general freelance services | Proposals, invitations, search, and project catalog | 0%–15% per contract; Connects generally cost $0.15 each | Hourly tracking, funded milestones, platform contracts, and disputes | Competition and proposal costs |
| Fiverr | Packaged, fixed-scope services | Clients discover and buy Gigs | Seller receives 80% of the purchase amount | Order and payment workflow on the platform | Low prices and revisions can reduce your effective rate |
| Toptal | Experienced, high-end professionals | Screening and platform matching | Rates are set by accepted freelancers; verify current terms | Managed network and contracts; details depend on engagement | Selective, multi-stage screening |
| Contra | Portfolio-led creatives and independents | Portfolio discovery, jobs, networking, and direct clients | No freelancer commission in the stated model; other fees and client fees can apply | Fixed-price, milestone, hourly-escrow, and custom projects | Less suitable for high-volume bidding; no commission does not mean no fees |
| FlexJobs | Vetted remote and contract listings | Applications to listed employers | Paid subscription; plans and trial renewal matter | Usually handled by the employer, not FlexJobs | You pay without a guarantee of an interview or job |
| Direct clients and professional contracts | Service Page leads, networking, outreach, and job applications | Basic Service Page is free; optional premium features may cost extra | Usually no built-in escrow or dispute system for the resulting agreement | Lead generation depends on positioning and relationships | |
| Freelancer.com | International bidding and contests | Bids, invitations, and design contests | Generally 10% or $5, whichever is greater, on a winning project | Milestone-payment tools | Bid limits, minimum balance, and speculative contests |
| Guru | Recurring work and flexible agreements | Quotes, search, invitations, and WorkRooms | 5%–9%, depending on membership | SafePay, WorkRooms, invoices, and dispute process | Membership-based fee structure is less simple |
| 99designs | Logo, branding, and graphic designers | Direct design projects and contests | Verify current designer fees and payout rules | Platform-specific project and contest terms | Speculative contest work and design competition |
| Reedsy | Editors, ghostwriters, and book designers | Curated client requests and quotes | 10% service fee, plus payment-processing costs | Payment schedules and automatic payments through its collaboration system | Selective and limited to publishing services |
| ProZ.com | Translators and language professionals | Directory inquiries, job postings, and industry networking | Ordinary connections are commission-free; paid memberships are optional | Usually agreed directly between client and translator | Less payment intermediation and a specialized audience |
Important: these are different kinds of products. Upwork and Guru are open marketplaces; Fiverr sells predefined services; Toptal and Reedsy are curated networks; FlexJobs is a paid job board; LinkedIn is a professional network and lead channel; Contra emphasizes portfolios and direct projects; ProZ is a language directory and marketplace; and 99designs specializes in design and contests. A site that is good for discovering a client may not also hold money in escrow or resolve a payment dispute.
#1 Best Overall
How these picks were chosen
This is an editorial, use-case-based ranking rather than a claim that one website universally has the highest rates or the most jobs. The comparison considers:
- Relevant opportunity volume, 25%: whether the site regularly shows work in a freelancer’s field rather than merely listing profiles.
- Ability to win work, 20%: whether results depend on reviews, proposals, portfolio quality, personal networking, screening, or paid visibility.
- Freelancer economics, 20%: commissions, subscriptions, proposal credits, payout costs, processing fees, currency conversion, and client-side fees that can affect conversion.
- Payment and trust protections, 15%: escrow, milestone funding, time tracking, identity checks, and dispute procedures.
- Client and project fit, 10%: whether the work tends to be micro-projects, recurring assignments, enterprise contracts, contests, or specialist engagements.
- Geographic and practical access, 10%: country restrictions, currencies, payout methods, and suitability for part-time or remote work.
Because platform volume, pricing, availability, and interface rules change, a precise numerical score would create false confidence. The more useful question is: which platform’s business model matches the way I want to sell my service?
1. Upwork: best overall freelance marketplace
Best for: Developers, writers, designers, marketers, virtual assistants, consultants, data specialists, and other freelancers who want both one-off and recurring client relationships.

Upwork is primarily a proposal-based marketplace. Clients post hourly or fixed-price projects, and freelancers submit proposals. You can also receive invitations, sell predefined services through the Project Catalog, or bring an existing client through Direct Contracts. The platform supports hourly contracts, fixed-price milestones, time tracking, and payment tools.
Current cost
- The freelancer service fee is currently 0% to 15% per contract. Upwork displays the exact fee before you submit a proposal or accept an offer, and the fee is locked once the contract begins. See the official freelancer-fee explanation.
- Most proposals require Connects. Upwork currently prices Connects at $0.15 each. They generally are not refunded simply because a client rejects your proposal, hires someone else, or allows the post to expire. See Upwork’s Connects guidance.
- Direct Contracts for clients you bring to Upwork carry a reduced 5% freelancer fee, subject to the program’s rules. Details are in Direct Contracts documentation.
- Clients may also face a contract initiation fee of $0.99 to $14.99, which can affect how competitive your proposal is against a direct arrangement. See the current client-fee explanation.
Payment protection and trade-offs
Upwork is one of the stronger choices in this list when you want platform-managed contracts. For fixed-price work, do not begin until the contract is active and the relevant milestone is funded. For hourly work, use the platform’s required tracking and contract tools if you want the applicable protection. The platform also has a dispute process, but no payment system eliminates every risk of nonpayment, holds, refunds, or delays.
The main disadvantage is competition. A large marketplace can mean more relevant listings, but it also means more proposals, stronger review histories, and pressure to compete on price. Connects make indiscriminate applications a measurable expense. Calculate your desired take-home rate after the displayed contract fee, and apply only when your skills and portfolio closely match the scope.
Who should skip it: Someone who dislikes proposals, cannot yet show relevant work, or wants every lead to come from professional networking rather than a marketplace.

2. Fiverr: best for packaged services
Best for: Logo design, video editing, voice-over, social-media packages, SEO tasks, thumbnails, copywriting, presentation design, music, and other services with a clearly defined deliverable.
How Fiverr works
Fiverr reverses the traditional proposal model. You create a predefined service called a Gig, with packages, prices, delivery times, revisions, extras, and requirements. Clients browse the catalog, contact sellers, or purchase an offer. Your visibility is influenced by factors such as reviews, response behavior, delivery performance, and repeat business.
Current cost
- Fiverr says freelancers receive 80% of the purchase amount, including Gig Extras and tips. The remaining 20% must be included in your pricing calculations. See the official Earnings page.
- Withdrawal options can include PayPal, Payoneer, and bank transfer through Payoneer, depending on your location and provider eligibility. Processing times, minimums, and withdrawal charges differ by method; review Fiverr’s payout rules.
- Eligible sellers may use Early Payout for a 1% fee. Eligibility is limited and can depend on account standing, sales activity, seller level, and compliance. See Early Payout requirements.
- Fiverr separately lists a standard buyer service fee of 5.5%, plus an additional $3 fee on orders under $100. Client-side fees can affect the price a buyer sees, so check the current buyer and seller terms.
Payment protection and trade-offs
The order workflow keeps payment and delivery inside Fiverr, but completed work may not become immediately withdrawable. Account verification, clearing periods, payout-method restrictions, and refunds can affect timing. A $50 order is not a $50 paycheck: the seller’s stated share is $40 before any applicable withdrawal costs, taxes, and the time spent communicating or revising.
Fiverr works best when you can turn your expertise into a repeatable offer. It is less suitable for ambiguous consulting work where the scope cannot be defined until after discovery. Very low-priced Gigs are particularly risky because revisions and messages can consume more time than the order is worth.
Who should skip it: Freelancers whose work is highly customized, strategic, or difficult to price before a consultation.
First action: Create one narrowly focused Gig with an exact deliverable, turnaround time, revision limit, client requirements, and portfolio samples that match the offer.
Official source: Fiverr earnings and linked help pages. Pricing and rules reflect the August 10, 2026 research snapshot; verify them before joining.
3. Toptal: best for experienced, high-end professionals
Best for: Senior developers, designers, management consultants, project and product managers, marketing and sales experts, and support or operations professionals with commercial experience.
How Toptal works
Toptal is a curated talent network rather than an open marketplace. You apply, complete the screening process if invited, and then receive access to matching opportunities after acceptance. Toptal says successful applicants typically have two to three or more years of relevant experience, strong communication skills, and the ability to become productive quickly.
The screening process typically takes a few weeks and can include communication and personality evaluation, a skills review, live screening, and a real-world test project. Toptal states that typically fewer than 3% of applicants are accepted. That is a company-reported figure, not an independently audited acceptance rate.
Current cost and earning model
Accepted freelancers set their own rates and can access full-time, part-time, and hourly opportunities. Toptal says members can set availability from zero to 50 hours per week. The supplied official materials do not establish a single current freelancer commission or membership fee, so do not assume that a marketing claim about high-end work equals a guaranteed net income. Review the engagement terms before accepting a project.
Payment protection and trade-offs
Toptal can be attractive when you want a managed matching process and are experienced enough to pass the screening. The trade-off is time and uncertainty before acceptance. The evaluation may include substantial test work, and project access is mediated by the network rather than controlled entirely by you.
Rank #2
Who should skip it: Beginners without commercial experience, a strong portfolio, or the time to complete a multi-stage screening process.
First action: Read the talent FAQ, compare your experience against the stated expectations, and prepare a portfolio that shows business outcomes rather than only technical tools.

4. Contra: best for portfolio-led creatives who want no freelancer commission
Best for: Web and brand designers, developers, marketers, writers, creative strategists, and other independents with portfolio-quality work.
How Contra works
Contra combines portfolio profiles, case studies, job discovery, contracts, invoicing, and payments. It is designed for presenting yourself as an independent business rather than relying entirely on low-bid proposals. Leads can come through portfolio discovery, job features, networking, and clients you bring yourself. Paid projects can use fixed-price, hourly-escrow, milestone, or custom-contract arrangements.
Current cost
Contra describes payments as commission-free for creatives. That means no freelancer commission in the stated standard model; it does not mean every transaction is free. The current pricing page lists client platform fees on the free plan of $2, $5, $10, or $29, depending on payment size. Pro reduces those client fees by 50%, while the listed Max plan waives them. Third-party payment-processing and payout charges remain separate.
The current pricing page lists Pro at $29 per month or $199 per year, while the free plan remains available. Plans and prices can change, so consult Contra pricing before subscribing. Project mechanics are explained in Contra’s paid-project documentation.
Payment protection and trade-offs
Contra is a good fit if you already have work to show and want to bring direct clients into a documented project. The financial advantage is the absence of a freelancer commission, but the client may see platform fees and you may still encounter processing or payout costs. A polished portfolio is more important than simply opening an account, and Contra may generate fewer ready-to-bid opportunities than Upwork.
Who should skip it: Someone with no portfolio, no service positioning, and no interest in direct outreach or relationship-building.
First action: Create three case studies showing your role, process, deliverables, and result, then use a milestone or hourly-escrow project for a new client.
Official sources: Contra pricing and paid projects. Fees reflect the August 10, 2026 research snapshot; verify the live plan and payment terms.
5. FlexJobs: best for vetted remote, freelance, and contract listings
Best for: Freelancers who prefer applying to screened remote, part-time, freelance, hybrid, and contract listings instead of competing in a transactional marketplace.
How FlexJobs works
FlexJobs is a paid job board. Its research team says it hand-screens every job listing and employer for legitimacy. That is a first-party screening claim, not a guarantee that every employer will be a good fit, respond to you, or pay on your preferred schedule. Listings cover areas including writing, administration, marketing, information technology, accounting, and customer service.
Current cost
FlexJobs’ listed plans include a $2.95 14-day full-access trial that automatically renews at $23.95 every four weeks, a three-month plan listed at $29.85 up front, and an annual plan listed at $71.40 up front. It also states a 14-day satisfaction or refund guarantee under its terms. Check the current pricing page before starting a trial, and set a calendar reminder for the renewal date.

FlexJobs helps you discover and apply for work, but it generally is not the party processing your freelance contract, holding milestone funds, tracking hours, or resolving a client payment dispute. You deal with the employer or its application system. This model can reduce exposure to obviously fake listings, but you still need to research the employer and negotiate a written agreement.
Who should skip it: Someone unwilling to pay a subscription, or someone specifically looking for instant marketplace checkout and escrow.

6. LinkedIn: best for direct clients and professional contract work
Best for: Consultants, B2B service providers, writers, designers, recruiters, marketers, coaches, developers, and experienced professionals who can win work through credibility and relationships.
How LinkedIn works
LinkedIn creates leads through two separate channels: the Jobs search system and its Services marketplace. A Service Page lets potential clients discover your services, send requests, and message you. LinkedIn Jobs lets you search and apply for contract and part-time roles. The platform is especially useful for direct outreach, referrals, publishing useful expertise, and maintaining a professional presence.
Free setup and current workflow
Any LinkedIn member can create a free Service Page, and LinkedIn says Service Pages are available globally except in China. On a personal profile, go to Me → View Profile → Add profile section → Add services. Add your service types, description, location, remote availability, and optional starting price. LinkedIn’s documentation says you can add up to 10 service types and may enable messages from people outside your connections where appropriate. The exact interface can vary by account and region.
Rank #3
For contract opportunities, search Jobs and apply the Contract or Part-time filters, then create alerts. See the LinkedIn job-search guidance.

A basic Service Page is free, and premium subscriptions are optional rather than required for the basic setup. However, LinkedIn usually introduces the client and provider without becoming the escrow or dispute-resolution provider. Its help documentation says clients and providers may finalize the agreement outside LinkedIn. Use a written contract, invoice, deposit, and milestone schedule appropriate to the project.

Best for: Web development, data entry, writing, design, app work, and freelancers comfortable bidding for international fixed-price or hourly projects.
How Freelancer.com works
Freelancer.com supports more than 1,800 listed skill sets, fixed-price and hourly projects, milestone payments, competitive bids, and contests. Conventional work comes from searching and bidding on posted projects. Creative freelancers can also enter contests, where the client reviews submissions and awards a prize to a selected entry.
Current cost
- The freelancer project fee is generally 10% of the winning bid or $5, whichever is greater, once the project is accepted.
- Free members initially receive six bids per month and must maintain a minimum available account balance of $20 before placing a bid, according to the current fee page.
- Membership plans, optional bid promotions, withdrawal costs, currency conversion, and other charges can change the effective cost.
Review Freelancer.com fees and the workflow explanation before bidding.
Payment protection and trade-offs
Use the milestone system, and begin only after the project is awarded and the relevant milestone is funded. A bid is not a contract, and a contest entry is not a paid assignment. Contests may be reasonable when the prize and time commitment justify the risk, but they can also require substantial speculative work.
Who should skip it: Freelancers who do not want to compete on bids, pay attention to bid limits, or risk unpaid contest submissions.
First action: Complete the profile and skills sections, filter aggressively by scope and budget, and use your limited bids only where you can show a directly relevant sample.

8. Guru: best for flexible agreements and recurring work
Best for: Writers, developers, designers, administrative specialists, and other freelancers seeking recurring projects or a structured workroom for ongoing clients.
How Guru works
Freelancers create a profile, search jobs, submit Quotes, negotiate terms, and manage work through WorkRooms. Guru supports fixed-price, hourly, task-based, and recurring payment arrangements, as well as invoices and time tracking.
Current cost and SafePay
Guru’s freelancer job fee ranges from 5% to 9%, depending on membership. A freelancer can agree to split up to 5% of that fee with the employer. The exact membership economics should be compared with the amount of work you realistically expect to win.
SafePay is funded by the employer before work begins. It can support arbitration if funds remain in SafePay. Guru lists an arbitration fee of $25 or 5% of the SafePay balance, whichever is higher, with a waiver for balances of $50 or less. SafePay is recommended for new clients but is not mandatory, so an invoice or a client promise is not the same as funded protection.
Withdrawal methods can include PayPal, Payoneer, wire transfer, and U.S. direct deposit, subject to account and geographic conditions. See Guru’s freelancer workflow, job-fee page, and SafePay terms.
Who should skip it: Someone who wants the largest possible general marketplace or finds membership-based fees confusing.
First action: Build a profile around one service, submit a specific Quote, and ask a first-time client to fund SafePay before you perform substantial work.
Official sources: Guru freelancer workflow, job fees, and SafePay. Figures reflect the August 10, 2026 research snapshot.
9. 99designs: best for logo, branding, and graphic designers
Best for: Logo design, brand identity, web design, book covers, packaging, apparel, merchandise, and other visual design work.
Recommended Free Tools
Rank #4
How 99designs works
99designs is a design-specific marketplace. Work may come from direct design projects or contests in which multiple designers submit concepts and the client selects a winner. Current comparison coverage describes applicant review and designer levels that can affect visibility, but the exact current rules and fees should be confirmed on the official site.
Costs, protection, and trade-offs
A current first-party designer-fee page was not located in the supplied research pass, so this guide does not state an exact commission, level policy, contest rule, or payout schedule. Check 99designs’ live terms before pricing a project.
The specialization is useful if design is your profession but irrelevant to most nonvisual freelancers. Contests can expose your work to clients, but they may also require unpaid speculative concepts. Before entering, check the time limit, prize, rights transfer, reuse restrictions, and whether ownership changes only after payment.
Who should skip it: Non-designers, or designers who prefer not to submit speculative concepts.
First action: Review current designer eligibility and contest terms, then prepare a focused portfolio for one category such as logos, packaging, or book covers.
Reference: 99designs official site. Current fees and participation rules require live verification; do not rely on old comparison articles.
10. Reedsy: best for publishing professionals
Best for: Book editors, proofreaders, ghostwriters, book designers, publishing marketers, translators, and specialists with relevant publishing credits.
How Reedsy works
Reedsy is a curated publishing marketplace. Only selected freelancers are accepted into its community. Accepted professionals can receive project requests from authors and publishers, and clients can request quotes from up to five freelancers at a time. This creates a more limited, relevant comparison set than open bidding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCurrent cost and payment model
It is free to join and list services, but Reedsy charges professionals a 10% service fee. Payment-processing costs are separate. Reedsy provides payment schedules and automatic payments through its collaboration system. Review the community and fee information before applying.
Trade-offs
Reedsy can be a better fit than a general marketplace if your portfolio demonstrates genre expertise, editing credits, or book-industry knowledge. It is not suitable for most software, general administrative, or broad marketing work. Acceptance is selective, and lead volume varies by genre, service, season, and publishing market.
Who should skip it: Freelancers without publishing-specific samples or anyone looking for general online work.

11. ProZ.com: best for translators and language professionals
Best for: Translators, interpreters, subtitlers, localization specialists, terminology professionals, and language-service companies.
How ProZ.com works
ProZ.com is a professional community, directory, and job marketplace. Registering is free and does not require credentials to create an account, although paid membership adds visibility and features. A strong profile should state your language pairs, specialization, tools, location, credentials, and relevant experience.
ProZ says ordinary connections between outsourcers and language professionals are commission-free: the client and translator agree directly on rates, deadlines, and payment. Paid members receive enhanced visibility, including priority directory placement and earlier access or visibility for some opportunities. ProZ currently lists membership at $120 per year for Standard, $180 per year for Plus, and $25 per month for Premium. Membership improves visibility but does not guarantee work. ProZ also notes exceptions, including certain Instant Jobs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Payment protection and trade-offs
Because ordinary project terms are generally agreed directly between the parties, ProZ may introduce the client without managing the entire contract or payment relationship. Check the client or agency’s reputation and payment history, use a written agreement, and clarify currency, payment timing, revisions, and ownership before starting.
Who should skip it: Someone seeking generic online work without a language specialization.

Which freelance website is best for you?
| Your situation | Start with | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner with several digital skills | Upwork and Fiverr | Upwork offers broad categories; Fiverr lets you define a simple, specific service. |
| Senior developer, consultant, or product professional | Toptal, Upwork, and LinkedIn | These options support professional positioning, higher-complexity work, or selective matching. |
| Designer with a polished portfolio | Contra, 99designs, and LinkedIn | Portfolio discovery, design specialization, and direct-client relationships matter more than mass bidding. |
| Writer or editor | Upwork, Reedsy, and LinkedIn | Use a general marketplace for volume, Reedsy for publishing, and LinkedIn for direct professional leads. |
| Translator or interpreter | ProZ, Upwork, and LinkedIn | ProZ adds language-specific discovery and industry context; the others broaden the client pool. |
| Seeking remote contract work rather than marketplace gigs | FlexJobs and LinkedIn | Both are better suited to finding and applying for contract listings than selling microservices. |
| Comfortable with international bidding | Upwork, Freelancer.com, and Guru | All support proposals or quotes, but their fee and payment systems differ. |
| Trying to avoid freelancer commissions | Contra and ProZ | The stated standard models do not charge a freelancer commission, but client, membership, processing, payout, or exception fees may still apply. |
| Seeking recurring client relationships | Upwork, Guru, LinkedIn, and Contra | These are better suited to ongoing contracts, direct relationships, or structured projects. |
| Most concerned about scam exposure | FlexJobs first, plus funded protection elsewhere | FlexJobs says it screens listings, but no site guarantees safety; use milestones or escrow on transactional platforms. |
How to calculate the real cost of a freelance website
Do not compare platforms using commission alone. The cost of a freelance website can include:
- Commission deducted from each completed project.
- Proposal credits, Connects, bid limits, or paid bid promotion.
- Monthly or annual memberships and automatic trial renewals.
- Client platform fees that make your offer look more expensive.
- Payment-processing, withdrawal, wire, and currency-conversion charges.
- Early-payout fees.
- Unpaid proposal, discovery, messaging, revision, and administrative time.
- Taxes, business registration, insurance, software, and equipment, which are usually your responsibility.
Use this calculation before accepting a project:
Net hourly rate = (client payment - platform commission - payment fees - withdrawal and currency costs - unpaid work time costs) / total hours invested
Total hours should include proposal writing, calls, research, file preparation, revisions, invoicing, and follow-up. For example, a $1,000 Upwork project with a displayed 10% freelancer fee leaves $900 before other costs and taxes. A $500 Fiverr order produces an $400 seller share before payout costs and taxes. These are illustrations of the stated fee structures, not income expectations.
How to get your first freelance project
- Choose one narrow service and client type. The statement web designer is weaker than Shopify landing-page designer for small online retailers.
- Create three to five relevant samples. They can be self-initiated or clearly labeled sample projects. Do not present hypothetical work as paid client work.
- Write your profile around outcomes. Explain what you improve, for whom, what you deliver, and how you work; do not only list software tools.
- Set a minimum profitable rate. Account for commission, taxes, unpaid time, revisions, and the cost of finding the work.
- Choose one or two platforms. Opening 11 empty profiles usually creates less traction than completing one strong profile and testing a clear offer.
- Apply selectively or package precisely. On Upwork and Freelancer.com, submit only to closely matched projects. On Fiverr, make the scope and revision limits obvious. On LinkedIn and Contra, make the portfolio do more of the selling.
- Personalize the opening lines. Refer to the client’s actual problem and mention one directly relevant sample. Avoid generic copy-and-paste proposals.
- Ask one or two scope questions. Confirm the desired outcome, source materials, deadline, decision-maker, and definition of completion.
- Document the agreement. State deliverables, exclusions, timeline, payment schedule, revision limits, ownership, and what happens when the client delays feedback.
- Require protection before starting. On marketplaces, wait for an active contract and funded milestone or SafePay balance. With direct clients, use a signed contract and an appropriate deposit or milestone.
- Deliver professionally and request a review. Ask after successful delivery, without offering a misleading or incentivized testimonial.
- Build independence from the platform. Maintain an independent portfolio, professional email, permission-based testimonials, written records, and a cash buffer for payout delays. Move repeat clients toward properly documented direct relationships only where platform rules allow.
Freelance scam and nonpayment safeguards
Freelance websites can reduce some risks, but none guarantees that every client is honest or that every listing is safe. Use these rules:
- Do not pay to get paid. A client should not require a fee, gift card, cryptocurrency transfer, equipment purchase, or refundable deposit before assigning work.
- Reject check-cashing schemes. Never cash a check and return part of the money or buy equipment with funds a stranger sends. Fake-check fraud can leave you responsible after the bank reverses the deposit.
- Do not perform a full project as a test. A short, time-limited skills test can be reasonable, but a request for a complete campaign, website, finished article, or extensive design package as an unpaid test is a red flag.
- Use funded milestones or escrow. A proposal, message, invoice, or promise is not proof that money has been reserved. Confirm the actual funded status in the platform’s system.
- Keep communication on-platform when required. Moving payment off a marketplace can remove dispute assistance and may violate platform rules. For LinkedIn and ProZ, where the relationship may be finalized directly, use a proper contract and payment process rather than relying on the platform’s name.
- Protect your accounts and files. Do not share passwords, one-time codes, banking credentials, or unnecessary identity documents. Treat unexpected attachments and requests to install software as suspicious.
- Check identity and reputation. Research a direct client, verify the company domain, look for a real business presence, and check agency or client payment history where the platform provides it.
- Watch for urgency and unrealistic pay. Pressure to start immediately, vague scope, unusually high pay for simple work, and refusal to answer basic questions are warning signs.
Even FlexJobs warns about scams impersonating FlexJobs itself. Its screening model is useful, but it is not a universal scam guarantee; read its safety warning and verify messages independently.
Financial issues freelancers should plan for
Payment holds and payout timing
A completed project is not necessarily immediately withdrawable money. Before depending on a platform for a bill, check clearing periods, first-withdrawal holds, identity verification, country eligibility, minimum withdrawal thresholds, currency conversion, refund or chargeback policies, and whether early payout carries an extra fee.
Taxes and records
Freelance income is generally taxable, but the exact rules depend on your country, state or province, business structure, and client location. Keep records of gross payments, platform fees, processing costs, software, equipment, advertising, and business mileage where relevant. Set aside money for taxes instead of treating the platform payout as spendable take-home pay. Consult a qualified tax professional for jurisdiction-specific advice.
Platform dependence
Reviews, rankings, account standing, and client histories can remain trapped inside a platform. Protect your income by maintaining an independent portfolio, a professional contact channel, permission-based testimonials, written contracts and invoices, and a cash reserve that can absorb a payout delay or sudden account review.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best freelance website for beginners?
Upwork and Fiverr are usually the most practical starting points for a beginner with a marketable digital skill. Upwork offers broad categories but requires competitive proposals and usually Connects. Fiverr is easier to understand when you can package one clearly defined service. Easy signup does not mean easy or fairly paid work; you still need relevant samples, a narrow offer, and a profitable minimum rate.

There is no universal winner because the models differ. Guru lists a 5%–9% freelancer job fee depending on membership. Contra describes its standard model as having no freelancer commission, while ProZ says ordinary client-professional connections are commission-free. Contra can still involve client platform fees, paid plans, processing, and payout costs; ProZ has optional paid memberships and exceptions. Compare total transaction cost, not just the advertised commission.
Is Upwork better than Fiverr?
Neither is universally better. Upwork is better when you want to apply for customized hourly or fixed-price projects and develop recurring client relationships. Fiverr is better when you can sell a repeatable service with defined packages, turnaround times, and revisions. Compare your likely net hourly rate, not just the headline price.
Are freelance websites safe?
They can provide useful identity, contract, escrow, milestone, or dispute tools, but no freelance website eliminates scams or payment delays. Never pay a client to receive work, cash a check for a stranger, provide account credentials, or begin substantial work without funded protection or a signed contract and deposit.
Can I use multiple freelance platforms?
Yes. Two complementary platforms are often more useful than 11 incomplete profiles. For example, combine Upwork with LinkedIn or Contra, or use ProZ alongside LinkedIn if you are a translator. Track each platform’s fees, applications, hours, payout timing, client history, and rules. Do not duplicate a project across platforms in a way that breaches an exclusivity or communication policy.

No. A profile, paid membership, proposal, screening pass, or portfolio listing does not guarantee a client or income. Toptal and Reedsy are selective, while FlexJobs says it screens listings, but those facts do not guarantee an interview, acceptance, or payment. Your results still depend on skill, positioning, samples, communication, demand, and competition.
Which platforms are best for remote contract jobs?
FlexJobs and LinkedIn are the strongest fits when you want to search and apply for remote or contract roles rather than sell small marketplace packages. Use FlexJobs with close attention to subscription renewal, and use LinkedIn’s Jobs filters for Contract or Part-time. Neither necessarily provides escrow for the resulting employer relationship.
Which freelance websites are best for designers?
Contra is useful for portfolio-led designers and direct clients, 99designs specializes in visual design and contests, LinkedIn supports direct professional leads, and Fiverr works for clearly packaged design services. Use Upwork when you want to apply for customized design projects. Check contest rights, time requirements, fees, and payment terms before submitting speculative work.
Which sites are best for writers and editors?
Upwork provides broad writing and editing opportunities, Reedsy is specialized for book publishing, and LinkedIn is useful for direct clients and professional services. Fiverr can work for narrowly packaged copywriting or editing offers. Publishing samples, subject expertise, and clear revision limits are particularly important.

Can I find freelance work without experience?
You can find entry-level opportunities, but you need evidence that you can deliver. Create a few honest sample projects, offer a narrow service, start with a manageable scope, and avoid accepting work whose effective hourly rate is unprofitable. Toptal and Reedsy are generally poor first choices because their screening and curation favor established professionals.
Do I need to pay to join a freelance website?
Some services offer free signup or profiles but charge when you win work, submit proposals, withdraw funds, or use premium visibility. Upwork uses contract fees and generally paid Connects; Fiverr deducts a share from orders; LinkedIn offers a free Service Page; Contra has a free plan but client and optional plan fees; FlexJobs requires a subscription for full access; ProZ offers free registration plus paid memberships. Always check automatic renewal terms.
How do freelance websites pay workers?
Payment may be released through platform milestones, hourly systems, order workflows, or SafePay, or it may be arranged directly between client and freelancer. Withdrawal options and timing vary by country and can include PayPal, Payoneer, bank transfer, wire transfer, or direct deposit. Check clearing periods, verification requirements, minimums, fees, and currency conversion before relying on the money.
What should I do if a client asks me to work for free?
Clarify whether the request is a short, reasonable skills test and set a strict time limit. Do not provide a complete campaign, website, article, or production-ready design without payment or a clearly documented paid test. Ask what happens to the submitted work and when intellectual-property rights transfer. If the client refuses a contract, funded milestone, or reasonable scope, decline.

Are freelance website earnings taxable?
Freelance income is generally taxable, but the rules depend on your jurisdiction, business structure, and circumstances. Track gross income, platform commissions, payout fees, software, equipment, and other potentially relevant business expenses. Set aside money for taxes and obtain jurisdiction-specific advice from a qualified tax professional.
The Bottom Line
Start with one or two platforms that match your selling model, not all 11. Use Upwork for broad proposal-based work, Fiverr for a repeatable packaged service, LinkedIn or Contra for portfolio-led direct clients, and Toptal or the specialist platforms only when your experience fits their requirements. Before accepting any project, calculate your net hourly rate, document the scope, and confirm that payment is funded or contractually protected.
