The right visitor analytics tool depends on what you need to learn: where visitors come from, how they interact with pages, or which actions lead to outcomes in a product. This shortlist compares 10 tools by that job—not as a universal ranking—so you can narrow the options for a finance site, calculator, newsletter, or financial app.

Start with the question you need analytics to answer

Web, behavioral, and product analytics overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A traffic report can show visits and acquisition; it may not explain how visitors use a page. A heatmap or recording can help reveal interaction patterns, but it does not replace event-based funnel or retention analysis.

  • Traffic and acquisition: Which channels bring visitors, and how does site traffic change?
  • Page behavior: Where do people click, scroll, or encounter friction?
  • Product outcomes: Which events, funnels, or repeat-use patterns precede a signup, application, or other outcome?

For a personal-finance publisher, those questions might mean measuring referral traffic to a budgeting guide, spotting where readers abandon a loan calculator, or understanding whether people who start a financial app’s onboarding complete it. Choose based on the question and the data you are prepared to collect.

Compare the 10 tools by their intended job

Tool Primary fit in this shortlist What the available product information establishes
Google Analytics General web analytics A familiar general-purpose option; current GA4 scope, setup, controls, and pricing are not established here.
Matomo Web analytics with hosting and privacy-control choices Cloud and on-premise options, APIs, open-source software, IP anonymisation, and data-subject tools.
Plausible Analytics Vendor-positioned privacy-friendly web analytics Positioned by its vendor as an alternative to Google Analytics; detailed plan limits and capabilities need current verification.
Fathom Analytics Vendor-positioned privacy-first analytics Current features and pricing need to be checked against its plan page.
Adobe Analytics Enterprise analytics consideration Included as an enterprise option; specific differentiators and prices are not established here.
Mixpanel Product events, funnels, and retention Its pricing page lists funnels and retention analysis in Free, with up to 1 million events per month.
Amplitude Event-level product analysis and adjacent capabilities Its pricing page states that Free includes up to 2 million events per month; the platform also describes session replay and experimentation.
Heap Analytics platform to evaluate for a specific product need The available homepage information does not establish enough detail for a feature or price comparison.
PostHog Web analytics alongside broader product analytics Its web analytics page describes inspecting traffic trends and anomalies.
Microsoft Clarity Behavioral analysis or a companion to traffic analytics Microsoft lists heatmaps, session recordings, segmentation, and a Google Analytics connection; it describes Clarity as free with no traffic limits.

Plan figures and feature lists above are vendor-published terms, not independent performance measures. They can change. For Mixpanel, Amplitude, and Clarity, confirm the live plan page before choosing a tier.

Tools for general website measurement

Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a familiar general web analytics option to consider when your main needs are site traffic and acquisition reporting. The information available for this comparison does not establish the current GA4 feature scope, setup requirements, data controls, or pricing. Check Google’s current documentation against your intended implementation before relying on any particular capability or cost.

Matomo

Matomo is worth evaluating when hosting choice and configurable data controls matter alongside site measurement. Its documented options include cloud and on-premise hosting, analytics APIs, IP anonymisation, and data-subject tools. Matomo describes its software as “100% FREE Software (open-source, GPL license), yet compatible with commercial uses.” That is the vendor’s description of its software; it does not mean every hosting, support, or implementation choice is cost-free. Review the plan-specific feature matrix and operating requirements for the deployment you want.

Plausible Analytics

Plausible positions its product as privacy-friendly web analytics and an alternative to Google Analytics. That makes it a candidate if those are your selection criteria, but the positioning alone does not establish a particular feature set, legal outcome, or cost. Check current limits and technical capabilities before comparing it feature by feature with a general-purpose analytics service.

Fathom Analytics

Fathom is positioned by its vendor as privacy-first analytics. If you are considering it for a finance site, verify its current measurement features and plan terms against your needs rather than inferring capabilities from that positioning. In particular, establish which sites, traffic levels, integrations, and reporting functions a proposed plan covers.

Adobe Analytics

Adobe Analytics belongs on an enterprise evaluation list, but the product information available for this comparison does not substantiate detailed differentiators or pricing. For an organization considering it, request current product and commercial details and compare them with the questions, implementation requirements, and governance controls the team actually needs.

Tools for product events, funnels, and retention

Mixpanel

Mixpanel fits a product team that needs to analyze events and paths such as starting a calculator, completing an application, or returning to a financial app. Its pricing page lists funnels and retention analysis in the Free tier and up to 1 million events per month. Treat those as Mixpanel’s published plan details, not as an industry benchmark; check the current page for what counts as an event and what happens when usage grows.

Amplitude

Amplitude is an option for event-level product analysis and related capabilities. Its pricing page states that Free includes up to 2 million events per month and says the plan requires no credit card. The page also describes session replay and experimentation among the platform’s features; do not assume every capability is included in Free. Check the current plan and feature breakdown for your intended workload.

Heap

Heap is a candidate to assess if you are looking for an analytics platform, but the available product information does not provide enough detail to responsibly compare its capabilities or price with the other tools here. Confirm its current scope, implementation approach, integrations, and plan terms before shortlisting it for a specific workflow.

PostHog

PostHog is relevant if you want website traffic measurement alongside broader product analytics. Its web analytics information describes using analytics data to inspect traffic trends and anomalies. Whether that combination suits your site or app depends on the detail you need and the current product and plan terms, which should be confirmed directly.

Tools for seeing how visitors interact with pages

Microsoft Clarity

Clarity is useful to consider when you want behavioral context such as heatmaps and session recordings, rather than relying on traffic totals alone. Microsoft also lists segmentation and a Google Analytics connection. Microsoft’s pricing page describes Clarity as free with no traffic limits and explains the company’s rationale for offering it at no cost; that is the vendor’s pricing statement, not an independent guarantee that terms will never change. Check the current page and product documentation for applicable terms and controls.

For example, a pageview count might show that visitors reach a mortgage calculator; a heatmap or recording can help investigate where they interact or stop. Treat recordings as sensitive operational data: decide what should be captured, who can access it, and what retention and deletion settings apply before enabling them.

How to choose for a site, calculator, or financial product

  1. Write down the decision you want data to inform. Choose traffic and acquisition reporting for channel questions, interaction analysis for page usability, or event analysis for product funnels and repeat use.
  2. Map the measures to the actual journey. For a finance site, identify meaningful steps such as arriving at an article, opening a calculator, starting an application, or subscribing. Do not collect events just because a platform can track them.
  3. Check implementation and data control requirements. Establish whether the tool supports your site or app, how it is deployed, what integrations and export or API options are available, and what controls exist for retention, deletion, and access.
  4. Review privacy in context. Identify what information will be collected, whether IP anonymisation or other controls are available, whether consent is needed for your use, and which jurisdiction applies. A vendor’s privacy language or a self-hosted deployment does not by itself establish legal compliance.
  5. Model the cost at your expected workload. Compare the relevant units—such as events, hits, replay sessions, sites, users, and retention—and determine which features are paid or subject to a cap. Enterprise terms may be custom, so a free-tier headline is not enough to compare total cost.
  6. Run a bounded evaluation. Test whether the tool answers the decision you identified, whether the data is understandable to the people who will use it, and whether its controls and operating burden are acceptable. Avoid treating a vendor’s positioning or a short feature list as proof of fit.

For current information, consult each vendor’s official product and pricing documentation: Google Analytics, Matomo, Plausible Analytics, Fathom Analytics, Adobe Analytics, Mixpanel, Amplitude, Heap, PostHog, and Microsoft Clarity. Pricing, included features, regional availability, and privacy settings can change, so verify the terms for your region and deployment before committing.

What free plans and privacy claims do—and do not—tell you

A free plan can be a practical way to evaluate a tool, but it does not necessarily mean unlimited analysis or access to every feature. The published event allowances for Mixpanel and Amplitude are monthly caps, while Microsoft describes Clarity as having no traffic limits. These are different vendor plan statements, so compare the unit each service counts and the functionality attached to it rather than ranking them by the word “free.”

Privacy controls are similarly specific. IP anonymisation, data-subject tools, self-hosting, consent options, and deletion or retention controls address different parts of a data-handling setup. Determine how the selected configuration works with your own collection practices and jurisdiction; product capabilities alone do not settle compliance.
