Before buying a Tesla, price the specific car and its ongoing costs, confirm that charging fits your routine, and verify the vehicle’s warranty and condition. For used cars, distinguish Tesla Certified Pre-Owned benefits from claims made about an independent listing. This guide is U.S.-oriented; prices, eligibility, and vehicle details vary by location and can change.
1. Calculate the full cost, not just the purchase price
A vehicle’s advertised price does not tell you what it will cost to own. Build a budget for the exact model and configuration, using current quotes for your circumstances rather than a generic ownership-cost estimate.
- Purchase and financing: Compare the out-the-door price, down payment, loan terms, and total amount repaid.
- Insurance: Request quotes using the specific vehicle and your location; premiums can differ substantially by driver, coverage, and insurer.
- Charging: Estimate home or public charging costs from your expected driving and applicable electricity or charging rates. For home electricity, a basic estimate is energy used in kilowatt-hours multiplied by your utility’s price per kilowatt-hour.
- Home equipment and installation: Include these only if your parking and electrical setup require them.
There is no single reliable ownership-cost figure for every Tesla buyer. Your location, financing, insurance, driving, and charging arrangements determine the comparison that matters.
2. Decide whether a new or used Tesla fits your priorities
Compare cars as closely as possible: same model, configuration, features, and warranty position. A lower listed price on a used car is not a like-for-like saving if it has a different configuration, less remaining warranty, or a condition or history that changes its value to you.

Tesla inventory and offers are local and time-sensitive. Check current listings and terms when you are ready to decide rather than relying on an old advertised price.
3. Know what Tesla Certified Pre-Owned does—and does not—cover
Tesla says a vehicle sold through its Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program passes a 119-point inspection and includes an Autocheck History report. Tesla also says CPO vehicles receive any remaining original New Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage, when applicable, plus Pre-Owned Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage.
These are claims about Tesla’s CPO program, not every used Tesla. An independent seller’s car does not automatically come with Tesla’s CPO inspection, report, or coverage. Confirm that the specific vehicle is being sold as CPO and review the actual warranty terms before treating it as such.

4. Check the warranty for the exact VIN
Tesla’s current U.S. warranty information lists basic vehicle coverage of 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. Battery and drive-unit coverage depends on the model group: Tesla lists terms of 8 years/100,000 miles, 8 years/120,000 miles, or 8 years/150,000 miles. The applicable battery terms include a 70% minimum battery-capacity retention threshold.
Do not choose a term based on a general model-family assumption. Confirm the exact model and warranty document, the original purchase or delivery date, and the car’s mileage. For a used vehicle, establish which coverage remains and when it ends; warranty terms and eligibility are tied to the specific vehicle.
5. Sort out home charging before delivery
If you have a suitable place to park and can install charging equipment, home charging can make everyday charging more convenient. Tesla lists the Mobile Connector, Wall Connector, and Universal Wall Connector; the right choice depends on your driving routine, parking, vehicle, and electrical installation. Ask a qualified installer to assess your home and confirm compatibility before buying equipment.

Tesla gives $750–$1,500 as an example range for installing a new 240-volt outlet. That is an illustrative company figure, not a quote for your property; installation requirements and cost depend on the home. If you cannot charge at home, assess the public charging options you would actually use before committing to the car.
6. Check public charging against your real routes
Think about where you can charge during ordinary weeks as well as longer trips. Tesla positions Superchargers for long-distance travel and home charging for daily local driving. Map the stations along your regular routes and the journeys you make often enough to matter, and consider whether the available stops work with your schedule.
Tesla says Supercharger rates vary with battery size and age, state of charge, ambient temperature, and vehicle configuration. Its advertised “up to 200 miles in 15 minutes” is a company-stated maximum, not a guaranteed result for a particular car, charging stop, or trip. Do not use that maximum as a fixed promise when planning travel.

7. Verify any free Supercharging claim on the car
Do not add the value of free Supercharging to your budget based only on a seller’s statement. Tesla says an owner can check the status in the app under Specs and Warranty. Credits may have conditions, and standard fees may apply when credits expire or do not cover a session.
A prospective buyer may not be able to verify the status before becoming the owner or a registered driver. Treat the claim as unconfirmed until the vehicle’s status and applicable conditions can be checked.

For any used Tesla, read the history and title information and review available accident and repair records. Look over the body, interior, and tires; test charging operation; and check for warning messages. If you are not equipped to assess the vehicle, consider having a qualified independent inspector examine it before purchase.

There is no universal battery-health score or condition outcome established for all used Teslas. Do not treat a general online claim or a seller’s summary as a substitute for assessing the individual vehicle.
9. Do not count on a federal clean-vehicle credit for a 2026 purchase
According to current Internal Revenue Service guidance, federal credits for new, previously owned, and qualified commercial clean vehicles are unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. Vehicles acquired by that date may still qualify if placed in service later and if all applicable requirements are met. A buyer acquiring a vehicle now should not budget for one of those credits.
State, local, or utility incentives may have separate rules. Tesla lists such programs but cautions that availability and eligibility can change. Check with the sponsoring agency or utility for your location and the exact vehicle rather than assuming an incentive applies.
10. Treat financing-related tax provisions cautiously
Tesla describes a possible deduction of up to $10,000 in qualifying interest for certain new passenger vehicles, subject to conditions and an income phaseout; its summary says used vehicles and leases do not qualify. A deduction is not the same as a credit, and the stated maximum is not guaranteed tax savings for an individual buyer.
