10 Sports Cars to Search for Under $5,000—and What to Expect

A $5,000 sports car is possible, but condition and local supply matter more than the badge. Start with the Miata and Z3, then verify every listing carefully.

You can find sports cars advertised below $5,000 in the U.S., but that price is a starting point, not a promise of a clean, dependable car. Local supply is uneven, and mileage, rust, title status, maintenance, and immediate repairs can change the value dramatically. The most defensible starting points are the Mazda MX-5 Miata and BMW Z3; several other models are worth searching for, but current evidence does not establish that clean examples are commonly available under the cap.

What $5,000 buys in the current market

At the time Edmunds’ nationwide search page was checked on October 4, 2026, it showed four Mazda MX-5 Miatas listed below $5,000. Examples included a 2000 Miata LS at $4,750 with 152,976 miles in Bonneau, South Carolina, and a 1994 base model at $4,995 with 217,457 miles in Bridgeport, Ohio. These are individual, changeable listings—not a market-wide price survey—and the page asks shoppers to enter a ZIP code for local results. Check Edmunds’ Miata listings.

Condition can matter as much as the model. Hagerty’s March 11, 2025 valuation report for a 1996 BMW Z3 put fair condition at $4,900 and good condition at $9,900. Those are valuation estimates, not live asking prices, but the gap illustrates why a low asking price deserves careful scrutiny. Read Hagerty’s Z3 valuation report.

Use the list below as a search plan, not a guarantee that ten sorted cars will be waiting at this price. Some entries have direct listing or valuation evidence; others are leads from used-car guides or inventory searches that require local verification. CarCody’s buyer guide makes the key distinction: a $5,000 budget may buy an asking price, not necessarily a sorted, reliable car. See CarCody’s used-sports-car guide.

10 models to put on your search list

1. Mazda MX-5 Miata: the clearest place to start

The Miata has the strongest current under-budget evidence in this group: Edmunds displayed four nationwide listings below $5,000 when checked on October 4, 2026. The cited examples show the trade-off plainly—one was a 2000 model with 152,976 miles, while a 1994 example had 217,457 miles. Check the car’s maintenance history and physical condition rather than treating a low price as proof of a bargain.

Hagerty’s July 16, 2025 report on the 1990–1998 generation describes rear-wheel drive and says its original 1.6-liter engine made 120 hp. The report says, “With a modicum of care, Miatas are capable of high mileage and reliable long term service.” It also notes power-window issues and says timing belts should be changed every five years or 60,000 miles. Those are useful inspection and record-check prompts, not assurances about any particular used car. Read Hagerty’s Miata valuation report.

2. BMW Z3: investigate condition and valuation carefully

The Z3 is a two-seat roadster candidate with a meaningful condition spread in Hagerty’s 1996 valuation: $4,900 in fair condition versus $9,900 in good condition, as of the report published March 11, 2025. Hagerty also lists a +$2,000 adjustment for a removable hardtop and a -15% adjustment for an automatic transmission. These are valuation adjustments, not a promise that a car in fair condition will be safe, roadworthy, or inexpensive to bring up to standard. Review the full Z3 valuation.

3. Ford Mustang V6: a larger, four-seat option to search

A recent CarCody guide names the Mustang V6 among used sports-car candidates under $5,000. Treat that as a search lead, not verified evidence of current local availability. A Mustang’s larger body and rear-seat layout may suit a different buyer than a two-seat roadster, but the specific car’s title, rust, service history, and condition determine whether its asking price makes sense.

4. Chevrolet Camaro: check the individual car, not just the badge

CarCody also lists the Camaro as a candidate for a sub-$5,000 search. The available evidence does not establish a comparable current asking price or repair-cost profile for a particular generation, so compare only actual local listings and their condition. A low-priced example with deferred work may not fit a strict total-cost budget.

5. Pontiac Firebird: another local-deal possibility

The Firebird appears alongside the Camaro in CarCody’s list of budget sports-car leads. Search locally and verify the exact car’s title, history, and mechanical condition; the guide does not establish how often sound examples are available below the cap.

6. Mitsubishi Eclipse: a candidate, not a price guarantee

CarCody names the Eclipse among cars worth hunting under $5,000, but the evidence here does not confirm current local listings at that price. Use the model name to broaden your search, then judge each result on its own documentation and inspection.

7. Pontiac Solstice: surfaced in an under-budget inventory search

The Solstice appeared on iSeeCars’ used rear-wheel-drive sports-car search page for cars under $5,000. That establishes it as a search result, not that a suitable example is available in every area or that the listing is mechanically sound. Confirm local availability and inspect any car before committing. View iSeeCars’ under-$5,000 RWD search.

8. Nissan 350Z: verify the price and condition locally

The 350Z also surfaced on the iSeeCars under-$5,000 rear-wheel-drive search page. That is a lead to investigate rather than proof of routine availability or a typical sale price. Confirm that a listing is current, examine its condition, and avoid assuming that an advertised price includes needed maintenance.

9. Toyota Celica: worth searching locally

CarCody names the Celica as another possible budget sports-car search. Current under-$5,000 listing evidence was not established for this model here, so treat it as a local-search lead and evaluate actual listings rather than relying on the name alone.

10. Honda Prelude: worth searching locally

The Prelude is also named in CarCody’s guide, but the available evidence does not confirm current under-$5,000 listings. Check local supply and the individual car’s records, title, and condition before deciding whether it belongs on your shortlist.

Models that may fall outside a $5,000 target

The Toyota MR2 is a recognizable two-seat, mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car made from 1984 to 2007 across the W10, W20, and W30 generations. But the MR2 Spyder (W30) benchmark displayed by CLASSIC.COM was $12,939 when the page was viewed in 2026. CLASSIC.COM cautions that actual value depends on condition, so this benchmark is not a quote for every MR2; it does show why a Spyder should not be presented as a typical sub-$5,000 buy. Historical low sales are not a guarantee of a current bargain. See CLASSIC.COM’s Toyota MR2 market page.

Historical Miata sales figures need the same caution. Hagerty’s report for the 1990–1998 generation, published July 16, 2025, gives a lowest sale of $1,651 and a most recent sale of $9,660 in its dataset. The low figure records a past transaction; it does not establish that a comparable car can be bought now for that amount. See Hagerty’s Miata report and dataset.

How to choose among listings

Compare the complete car and your intended use—not just the model name and advertised price. A two-seat roadster may be a poor fit if you need rear seats or regular cargo space, while a larger coupe may better suit those needs. Before making a shortlist, compare:

  • Local availability: A listing hundreds of miles away may add travel or transport costs, and listings can disappear or change.
  • Condition and rust: Look for structural corrosion, accident repairs, leaks, worn tires, and evidence of neglect; have a qualified inspector assess anything you cannot evaluate yourself.
  • Title and history: Confirm the title status and VIN history, and ask whether the seller has maintenance records.
  • Mechanical work due: Identify immediate maintenance and repairs before deciding whether the car fits your budget. The evidence here does not support a comparable repair-cost estimate across all ten models.
  • Ownership fit: Consider seating, cargo, insurance, parts availability, and whether the car will be a daily driver or a weekend project.

Pre-purchase checks before you pay

  1. Confirm the listing and documents. Verify that the car is still for sale, check the VIN against the title and vehicle-history information, and ask about ownership and maintenance records.
  2. Inspect the car in person. Check for rust, crash repairs, leaks, warning lights, uneven tire wear, and signs that maintenance has been deferred. Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection rather than relying on the seller’s description.
  3. Use an OBD-II reader only as an initial screen. A generic code reader can reveal stored diagnostic trouble codes, but a clean scan does not establish that the car is mechanically sound and does not replace a professional inspection.
  4. Keep room in the budget. Set aside money beyond the purchase price for immediate maintenance or repairs; there is no uniform repair allowance that can responsibly be applied to every model on this list.
