Reports on Johnny Depp’s spending describe an island, a yacht, a collection of homes, and expenses ranging from wine to a custom cannon. But most of the eye-catching figures came from claims made in 2017 by his former business managers, The Management Group (TMG), in a countersuit. Depp disputed their account and had separately sued the managers, alleging financial mismanagement. The list below distinguishes reported allegations from spending Depp later admitted; it is not an audited ranking or a statement of what he owns today.

10 costly purchases and expenses reported about Johnny Depp

The entries are grouped as reported examples, not ranked by verified price. Some figures cover ongoing upkeep or spending rather than a single purchase, and several items have no price established in the reporting cited here.

1. Little Hall’s Pond Cay in the Bahamas

Vanity Fair reported in 2017, citing a source close to TMG, that the uninhabited island property was offered for $3.6 million and that Depp’s manager negotiated a $3.225 million price in 2004. The Guardian later reported a $3.6 million purchase price and described the property as 45 acres. The accounts differ, so neither figure should be treated as a settled price. Vanity Fair; The Guardian.

2. A reported 14-home portfolio

TMG’s 2017 countersuit alleged that Depp paid more than $75 million to buy and maintain 14 homes, a total reported by the Associated Press. That figure combines acquisition and upkeep; it is a litigation claim, not an audited finding. The AP report also records that Depp had sued TMG, alleging financial mismanagement. Associated Press via CBS News.

3. A French estate near Saint-Tropez

The managers’ claims included a French village, while Vanity Fair described a chateau near Saint-Tropez among Depp’s properties. These accounts support identifying a French estate as part of the reported portfolio, but do not establish its individual purchase price. Vanity Fair; The Guardian.

4. Five neighboring Los Angeles penthouses

The Guardian reported in 2020 that Depp owned a five-penthouse complex in Los Angeles’s Eastern Columbia building. Its account said he and his then-wife lived in one unit and used another for clothes. The article does not state what the penthouses cost. The Guardian.

5. A luxury yacht—and its upkeep

Vanity Fair’s 2017 account of the managers’ claims described a yacht with an $8.75 million asking price and a further $8 million in refurbishment costs. It also put monthly operating and maintenance costs at $300,000–$400,000. These are figures from the TMG-side account, not independently verified expenses. The same account called the vessel 156 feet long; the AP summarized it as 150 feet. The Guardian later reported that Depp sold the yacht in late 2013. Vanity Fair; Associated Press via CBS News; The Guardian.

6. At least 45 luxury vehicles

Vanity Fair’s summary of the countersuit said TMG alleged millions of dollars in spending to acquire and/or maintain at least 45 luxury vehicles. The source does not provide a reliable model-by-model price breakdown, and its combined wording does not separate buying costs from upkeep. Vanity Fair.

7. Art, jewelry, and collectible guitars

The same countersuit summary alleged millions spent on more than 200 collectible art pieces, including works by Warhol, Klimt, Basquiat, and Modigliani, as well as expensive jewelry and about 70 collectible guitars. It gives no verified total for any individual work, piece of jewelry, or guitar. Vanity Fair.

8. A custom cannon for Hunter S. Thompson’s ashes

TMG alleged that more than $3 million was spent on a specially made cannon used to fire author Hunter S. Thompson’s ashes. This was an alleged, unusual project expense—not a conventional retail purchase—and the cited accounts do not independently verify the cost. Vanity Fair; The Guardian.

9. A music-label startup

The managers’ countersuit, as summarized by Vanity Fair and the Guardian, alleged that more than $4 million went to a startup music label run by a childhood friend. That is a claimed business expense, not a personal consumer purchase; the cited reporting does not establish a separate audited figure. Vanity Fair; The Guardian.

10. Wine

The clearest directly admitted figure in these accounts concerns wine. The Guardian reported that Depp testified in the 2020 UK libel trial that before rehab he spent more than $30,000 per month on wine. This is a reported monthly level from that period, not the price of a single purchase or evidence of current spending. The Guardian.

What the figures do—and do not—establish

The 2017 countersuit figures were presented by former managers in contested litigation. Depp’s representative, Adam Waldman, rejected the claims in Vanity Fair, saying: “Most of these points are false, grossly misleading or bewilderingly irrelevant to the lawsuit.” The AP likewise reported the managers’ allegation that Depp was responsible for his financial turmoil; that was their position in the dispute, not a judicial finding. The reported totals therefore should not be added together as though they were verified, non-overlapping purchases.

There are also meaningful differences among the examples: some are alleged one-time costs, some combine purchase and maintenance, and wine is recurring consumption. The $75 million homes figure expressly combines buying and maintaining properties, while the yacht account separates an asking price, refurbishment, and monthly costs. Several collection and property entries have no supported individual price at all. Past reporting also does not establish Depp’s present assets: the Guardian reported the yacht’s sale, while the other cited accounts are historical rather than a current inventory.
