10 Richest Drivers in Formula 1 History, Ranked by Reported Estimates

Crash.net’s August 2025 list puts Michael Schumacher first, Lewis Hamilton second and Fernando Alonso third. The figures are reported estimates, and the published order conflicts with its values for Niki Lauda and Kimi Räikkönen.

Michael Schumacher tops the latest located all-time ranking, followed by Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. Those positions come from reported wealth estimates—not audited personal balance sheets—and the 2025 list has an inconsistency: it ranks Niki Lauda below Kimi Räikkönen even though its own figures put Lauda’s estimate higher.

The 10 richest Formula 1 drivers in the 2025 ranking

Crash.net’s August 3, 2025 article attributes the following estimates to GQ. The amounts are in pounds sterling and should be read as reported estimates, not verified statements of personal wealth.

Published rank Driver Reported estimate
1 Michael Schumacher £472 million
2 Lewis Hamilton £385 million
3 Fernando Alonso £204 million
4 Kimi Räikkönen £143 million
5 Niki Lauda £157 million
6 Jenson Button £117 million
7 Sebastian Vettel £109 million
8 Mario Andretti £101 million
9 Eddie Irvine £93 million
10 Alain Prost £78 million

The published ranks and values conflict at positions four and five: Lauda’s reported £157 million is greater than Räikkönen’s £143 million. The table preserves Crash.net’s published order rather than silently changing it; ordering by the listed amounts alone would put Lauda fourth and Räikkönen fifth.

Why net-worth rankings differ

These lists are estimates assembled from public reporting, not official Formula 1 rankings or audited personal balance sheets. Their results can vary with publication date, estimator, source material, currency and the way wealth is assessed. A ranking’s displayed order may also fail to match its own figures, as the 2025 list does for Lauda and Räikkönen.

For comparison, PlanetF1’s 2024 list reported Michael Schumacher at US$586.5 million, Hamilton at US$285 million and Alonso at US$260 million among its first three; it placed Eddie Irvine tenth at US$117.3 million. PlanetF1 said initial figures were compiled by GQ Australia and current-driver figures came from a combination of reported figures. Those dollar estimates should not be combined with the 2025 pound estimates as if they shared the same date or methodology.

What an older Wealth-X estimate shows

A Wealth-X release dated March 17, 2015 reported a different all-time top ten, in US dollars: Schumacher, $780 million; Alonso, $220 million; Räikkönen, $180 million; Irvine, $180 million; Hamilton, $110 million; Button, $100 million; Alain Prost, $70 million; David Coulthard, $70 million; Sebastian Vettel, $45 million; and Nico Rosberg, $30 million.

These are Wealth-X’s estimates from 2015, not current valuations. Their differences from later media rankings illustrate why a wealth list needs an estimator and date alongside each figure. They are not directly comparable to the later pound-denominated list without a defined currency-conversion date and method.

Net worth is not annual earnings

A driver’s earnings in one year measure income over that period; estimated net worth concerns accumulated wealth and liabilities. The figures answer different questions. For example, Motorsport.com’s report of Forbes’ 2025 highest-paid drivers put Max Verstappen’s annual earnings at $76 million and Fernando Alonso’s at $26.5 million. Those annual figures do not establish either driver’s all-time net-worth position.
