The highest estimates in this selected group belong to Garfield creator Jim Davis ($800 million) and Simpsons creator Matt Groening ($600 million), according to Celebrity Net Worth profiles published in 2026. These are estimates, not audited personal fortunes. The list uses “comic creators” broadly: it includes newspaper-strip cartoonists, a manga creator and a creator whose work began as an online comic, alongside traditional comic-book writers. It is not a verified or definitive global top 10.

How to read these net-worth estimates

Net worth is the value of a person’s assets minus liabilities, but the cited profiles do not publish the financial records needed to calculate it independently. Their figures are best treated as publisher-reported estimates, not official disclosures or precise measurements. A ranking can also shift depending on which assets are counted and how a source values them; Books of Brilliance makes that general caution in its 2026 roundup, which covers authors broadly and does not validate this particular list.

The entries below are ordered by the estimates gathered from Celebrity Net Worth profiles. They do not establish a definitive ranking of all comic-book writers worldwide. Some creators have additional income from licensing, syndication, adaptations or businesses, but a franchise’s sales or circulation are not the same as its creator’s personal income.

The 10 richest comic creators in this estimate-based list

Rank Creator Published estimate Why they are included
1 Jim Davis $800 million Garfield creator and comic-strip cartoonist
2 Matt Groening $600 million Cartoonist and creator of The Simpsons
3 Todd McFarlane $300 million Comic-book creator, writer and entrepreneur
4 Eiichiro Oda $200 million One Piece creator, writer and illustrator
5 Jeff Kinney $80 million Diary of a Wimpy Kid author; the series began as an online comic strip
6 Gary Larson $70 million The Far Side creator and cartoonist
7 Mark Millar $25 million Scottish comic-book writer
8 Stan Lee $20 million at death in 2018 Historical estimate, not a current living-person figure
9 Chris Claremont $10 million Comic-book writer known for Uncanny X-Men
10 Brian Michael Bendis $4 million Comic-book writer and artist

All ten net-worth estimates in the table are reported by Celebrity Net Worth in 2026, except Stan Lee’s, which is explicitly a historical estimate for his death in November 2018, reported in the publisher’s 2026 profile. Each amount remains an estimate rather than a verified balance-sheet figure.

1. Jim Davis — $800 million estimate

Celebrity Net Worth identifies Davis as the creator of Garfield and points to the licensing business built around the strip. This list counts comic-strip cartoonists, not just writers of comic books, which is why Davis qualifies. The estimate reflects a reported fortune, not a disclosed accounting of his assets or the Garfield brand’s total value.

2. Matt Groening — $600 million estimate

Groening created The Simpsons and is described by Celebrity Net Worth as a cartoonist, animator and television producer. His work across television as well as comics makes this a broad creator estimate, not a measure of wealth earned solely from writing comic books.

3. Todd McFarlane — $300 million estimate

McFarlane’s profile connects his career to The Amazing Spider-Man, Image Comics, Spawn and McFarlane Toys. His case illustrates why creator fortunes can involve business ownership and products as well as writing and illustration; the profile does not break down how much of the estimate comes from each source.

4. Eiichiro Oda — $200 million estimate

Oda created, writes and illustrates One Piece. Celebrity Net Worth reported that the manga’s worldwide circulation passed 600 million copies in March 2026. That is a publisher-reported circulation figure for the series, not Oda’s personal earnings or net worth.

5. Jeff Kinney — $80 million estimate

Diary of a Wimpy Kid began as an online comic-strip series before becoming a printed book series. Kinney sits at the edge of the category rather than being a conventional comic-book scriptwriter, another reason to read this as a broad list of comic creators.

6. Gary Larson — $70 million estimate

Larson created The Far Side. Celebrity Net Worth says collected Far Side books have sold more than 45 million copies. Those reported sales provide context for the work’s reach but do not tell readers how much Larson personally received from them.

7. Mark Millar — $25 million estimate

Millar is explicitly identified in his profile as a Scottish comic-book writer. The $25 million figure is particularly difficult to assess: the profile does not disclose a reproducible method for valuing his assets or liabilities, so it should not be read as a precise financial calculation.

8. Stan Lee — $20 million estimate at death

Lee’s figure is a historical estimate at the time of his death in November 2018, not a current net worth. It is not directly comparable to estimates for living creators, whose assets and liabilities can change over time.

9. Chris Claremont — $10 million estimate

Claremont’s profile identifies him as a comic-book writer and novelist known for Uncanny X-Men. The reported amount is an estimate; the profile does not provide an asset-by-asset calculation.

10. Brian Michael Bendis — $4 million estimate

Bendis is described as a comic-book writer and artist associated with Ultimate Spider-Man and New Avengers. His reported estimate is the smallest in this selected group, but that does not prove he is among the least wealthy comic writers overall: the list is neither comprehensive nor based on a consistent audited dataset.

Why comic creators’ fortunes can differ so widely

Writing is only one possible source of income for a creator. The examples here span several different kinds of work and business activity:

  • Licensing and syndication: A long-running strip can generate value through licensing beyond its original publication. Davis’s Garfield business is a clear example in the cited profile.
  • Entertainment and adaptation work: Groening’s profile includes animation and television production, so his estimate encompasses a career broader than comics alone.
  • Ownership and other businesses: McFarlane’s profile links his creative work with Image Comics and McFarlane Toys, although it does not allocate his estimated wealth among those interests.
  • Books and circulation: Oda’s reported One Piece circulation and Larson’s reported collected-book sales describe the reach of their works. Neither statistic establishes the creator’s personal receipts.

These distinctions matter because a creator’s earnings depend on contracts, ownership shares, licensing terms, expenses, taxes and other financial details that the cited estimates do not disclose. A famous character or a high-selling series cannot, by itself, confirm the size of its creator’s fortune.

What this ranking can—and cannot—tell you

Within these published estimates, Davis, Groening, McFarlane and Oda sit well above the rest of the selected group. That is a comparison of estimates from one entertainment-profile publisher, not proof that they are the four wealthiest comic creators in the world. The candidate pool mixes comic-book writers with cartoonists, a manga creator and an author whose work began online; a ranking restricted to superhero or comic-book scriptwriters could have different members and a different order.

The figures are useful as rough, source-attributed estimates, but the available information does not establish a definitive top 10 or reveal enough underlying financial data to verify any person’s net worth. Treat the ranking as a snapshot of published estimates, with Stan Lee’s amount understood specifically as a figure from 2018.
