Jim Davis leads this indicative 2026 ranking, followed by Matt Groening. Nichesss estimates their net worths at $800 million and $600 million, respectively. These are third-party estimates, not audited wealth figures: Nichesss does not disclose its valuation methodology, and its list groups traditional cartoonists with animators, producers and other screen creators.

How the ranking should be read

Each amount below is an estimated net worth reported by Nichesss in 2026. The source does not explain how it calculated the figures, so the ranking is best treated as an indication of reported estimates—not a verified league table. Net worth is also not the same as annual earnings, cash on hand or the value of a single character or franchise.

The list uses a broad definition of “cartoonist.” It includes newspaper-strip creators, comic-book creators, authors and illustrators, animators, and television or film writers and producers. Those careers produce different kinds of income, and the estimates may not be directly comparable—especially when a person’s estate is compared with a living creator’s wealth.

The 10 richest cartoonists by estimated net worth

Rank Creator Estimated net worth Best known for
1 Jim Davis $800 million (Nichesss, 2026 estimate) Garfield
2 Matt Groening $600 million (Nichesss, 2026 estimate) The Simpsons and Futurama
3 Todd McFarlane $300 million (Nichesss, 2026 estimate) Spawn
4 Joss Whedon $100 million (Nichesss, 2026 estimate) Television, film and comic-related projects
5 Jim Henson $100 million (Nichesss, 2026 estimate) Animation, puppetry and characters for screen
6 Richard Donner $100 million (Nichesss, 2026 estimate) Film directing and producing
7 Bill Watterson $100 million (Nichesss, 2026 estimate; Celebrity Net Worth, 2022 page accessed 2026) Calvin and Hobbes
8 Sam Simon $100 million (Nichesss, 2026 estimate) The Simpsons and television production
9 Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel) $75 million (Nichesss, 2026 estimate) Children’s books and illustrated characters
10 Mike Judge $75 million (Nichesss, 2026 estimate) Beavis and Butt-Head and King of the Hill

What the leading creators’ careers show

Jim Davis: Garfield across media

Davis created Garfield. The estimated fortune is associated with several revenue channels: newspaper syndication, licensing, merchandise, television and film. That mix illustrates why a character with a long commercial life can matter more financially than strip fees alone.

Matt Groening: television franchises and publishing

Groening created The Simpsons and Futurama. Simon & Schuster describes The Simpsons as a global entertainment franchise and lists Groening books, including Bartman: The Hero’s Handbook. His career therefore spans television, syndication, books and licensing.

Todd McFarlane: comics and creator-owned business

McFarlane is best known for Spawn. His profile stands out in this list for the creator-owned publishing and merchandise business associated with the character, alongside his work in comic books.

Joss Whedon: an adjacent screen creator

Whedon is included because of his writing and producing work connected with animation and comics. He is not a traditional newspaper-strip cartoonist, so his position reflects the list’s broad category rather than a narrow definition of cartooning.

Jim Henson: characters, puppetry and animation

Henson’s work as an animator, puppeteer and creator fits a broad cartoon-creator category. The commercial basis cited for his inclusion is character licensing and screen work, rather than newspaper strips.

Richard Donner: the broadest category stretch

Donner was a film director and producer. His inclusion reflects Nichesss’s expansive treatment of cartoon and screen creators; it should not be read as evidence that he was a newspaper cartoonist.

Bill Watterson: a major strip, with limited corroboration

Watterson created Calvin and Hobbes. Celebrity Net Worth gives the same estimated net worth as Nichesss, but that second third-party figure is also not an audited valuation and its page does not disclose a methodology. Agreement between two estimates does not establish the amount as fact.

Sam Simon: television writing and production

Simon was a television writer and producer and a co-creator of The Simpsons. His place here represents the animation industry’s creative and production work, not the narrower occupation of drawing a comic strip.

Dr. Seuss: books and illustrated characters

Theodor Seuss Geisel, known as Dr. Seuss, was an author and illustrator. His inclusion reflects the broad overlap between cartooning, illustrated publishing and characters that can continue to generate licensing income.

Mike Judge: television animation and characters

Judge created Beavis and Butt-Head and King of the Hill. His profile represents television animation and the value associated with recognizable characters, rather than newspaper syndication.

Where Charles M. Schulz fits

Charles M. Schulz, creator of Peanuts, is a useful comparison even though he is not in Nichesss’s top ten. The Charles M. Schulz Museum records that he completed the final original strip shortly before his death in 2000, after a career of nearly fifty years built around Charlie Brown and Snoopy. Penguin Random House dates the first Peanuts daily strip to October 2, 1950, and maintains a continuing catalog of books.

Celebrity Net Worth estimates Schulz’s wealth at $200 million at death and claims that Peanuts later generated more than $1 billion. These are unverified third-party figures, not audited estate accounts. The at-death estimate and a claim about later franchise earnings measure different things, so neither makes a like-for-like comparison with the living creators above. Penguin Random House’s author biography says, “His ambition from a young age was to be a cartoonist.”

How cartoonists can build wealth beyond drawing fees

A strip payment or a salary for creative work is only one possible part of a creator’s finances. The examples in this ranking point to a broader set of potential revenue sources:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Syndication: A recurring strip can reach many newspapers and other outlets.
  • Licensing: Character rights can support authorized uses in products and other media.
  • Merchandise: Familiar characters may be used on goods, subject to the relevant rights and agreements.
  • Television and film: Adaptations and screen franchises can extend a character’s reach beyond its original format.
  • Publishing: Comic collections, books and related titles can keep work available to readers in print.
  • Ownership: Retaining rights or building a creator-owned business can affect how much value returns to the creator, though the terms vary by contract and project.

These are possible channels, not a guarantee of wealth. A franchise’s revenue is not automatically the creator’s personal income: rights, ownership shares, licensing arrangements, expenses and estate structures all matter. The available estimates do not provide enough detail to calculate how much any individual received from each channel.

Why Walt Disney is a different kind of comparison

Walt Disney’s career began with work as an advertising cartoonist, and D23’s official biography describes his later role as an animation pioneer, creator of Mickey Mouse and founder of Disneyland. He is relevant to the history of cartooning, but a comparison based on personal cartooning income would miss the larger context: his fortune was tied to studio ownership and the entertainment infrastructure built around his work.
