The athletes below are a selection of people with documented charitable gifts, fundraising, foundations, or community programs—not an audited ranking by lifetime giving or impact. A gift, a pledge, money raised, and a sustained program are different kinds of support, so they should not be treated as interchangeable totals.
How to read this list
The examples combine recent large gifts reported by the Chronicle of Philanthropy with older accounts of foundation work and fundraising from the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy. The Chronicle’s 2026 article tallies more than $208 million in gifts above $1 million by nine current and former professional athletes from 2021 through 2025. That is a defined sample of large gifts, not a complete account of athlete philanthropy.
The ten examples are organized by sport, not ranked. For fair comparisons, consider what was given or raised, when it happened, who received the support, and whether the evidence describes a one-time gift or ongoing work.
Basketball
Michael Jordan
The Chronicle reports three gifts totaling $30 million from Jordan between 2021 and 2025: two $10 million gifts to Novant Health, in 2021 and 2025, and a $10 million gift to Make-A-Wish in 2023. The article says the Novant support funded two family health clinics and a brain research institute, while the Make-A-Wish gift established an endowment.
#1 Best Overall
Charles Barkley
In 2023, Barkley pledged $5 million to Auburn University to endow scholarships for Black students. The Chronicle describes the pledge as a response to the Supreme Court’s affirmative-action ruling that year. Because this was reported as a pledge, it should not be conflated with a confirmed cash payment.
LeBron James
The LeBron James Family Foundation’s education and family-support work in Akron is a longer-running example of community philanthropy. A 2018 NBA account described the I PROMISE School and related support for families. That source documents the program at the time; it does not establish its current scope or provide a comparable giving total.
Football
Patrick Mahomes
Patrick and Brittany Mahomes jointly gave $5 million to Texas Tech University in 2024 for a campaign to renovate football facilities, according to the Chronicle. The gift belongs to both donors, rather than Patrick Mahomes alone.
Peyton Manning
Manning gave the University of Tennessee at Knoxville $4 million in 2025 to establish two named chair endowments, the Chronicle reports.

J.J. Watt
Watt became a prominent fundraiser for Hurricane Harvey relief. Carnegie’s 2017 overview describes that effort as historical fundraising, rather than a personal donation total or a measure of ongoing program impact. The distinction matters: money raised from many donors is not the same as money personally given by an athlete.
Baseball
Todd Helton
Helton gave $5 million to Undue Medical Debt in 2023. The Chronicle says the donation eliminated more than $10 million in medical debt for financially strained Coloradans. That reported debt-relief result is the article’s account of the gift’s effect.
Carlos Beltrán
Carnegie’s 2017 overview cites a $1 million gift by Beltrán for Puerto Rico relief efforts, along with additional fundraising after the island was hit by Hurricane Maria. Those are historical figures and should not be read as a current giving total.

Serena Williams
A 2017 Carnegie article, citing Look to the Stars, reported that Williams had supported 12 charities and 19 causes. That dated third-party count indicates breadth of involvement; it is neither an audited dollar amount nor a current count.

Michael Phelps
The Michael Phelps Foundation promotes healthy, active lives and broader participation in swimming, according to Carnegie’s 2017 overview. The article does not provide a current foundation budget or a quantified impact total.
What the evidence can—and cannot—show
The examples demonstrate several forms of athlete philanthropy: direct gifts to institutions and nonprofits, a scholarship pledge, foundation-led education work, and fundraising for disaster relief. They do not establish which athlete has given the most over a career or produced the greatest impact. The Chronicle’s recent tally excludes gifts below $1 million and does not capture every kind of charitable work; Carnegie’s examples are older and describe different activities.
A useful comparison starts by keeping the categories separate: identify the amount and date when reported, distinguish donated money from pledges and fundraising, note the recipient and purpose, and check whether the source measures activity or outcomes. Without a shared period and measure across sports, an ordinal top-ten list would imply a precision the available reporting does not support.
