Some McDonald’s restaurants stand out because they occupy historic buildings; others turn local scenery or a playful theme into part of the architecture. These 10 locations—from an adapted aircraft in New Zealand to a transparent glass restaurant in the Netherlands—show how one familiar restaurant format can take on very different surroundings. This is an editorial selection, not a formal architectural ranking.

Historic buildings given a second life

Several of the most distinctive restaurants are defined less by a new design than by what was already on the site: a house, café, or railway station with its own history and character.

1. New Hyde Park, New York — Denton House

This McDonald’s occupies Denton House, a historic property that the company says it restored to its 1926 appearance. After McDonald’s acquired the house and initially planned to demolish it, local residents helped secure landmark protection, according to the Smithsonian. The restaurant is notable as a preservation story as much as a restaurant design; current landmark details and public access should be checked locally.

2. Porto, Portugal — the former Café Imperial

In Porto, the restaurant is housed in the former Café Imperial. Architectural Digest describes an interior with stained-glass windows and crystal chandeliers, along with an arched entryway. The ornate setting makes a striking contrast with the familiar fast-food brand.

3. Freeport, Maine — the Gore House

The Freeport restaurant occupies the Gore House, built in 1850 and converted into a McDonald’s in 1984, according to the company. Rather than using a standard restaurant shell, the location adapts an existing residence for a new purpose.

4. Budapest, Hungary — inside a railway station

Architectural Digest describes a Budapest McDonald’s inside a railway station, where an arched ceiling and intricate molding shape the setting. The station name is not specified here, so it is best not to assume which station the restaurant occupies.

Distinctive buildings and local identity

Other locations use conspicuous forms or materials, but their designs still connect to the place around them—whether that means a city’s popular UFO associations or a modern architectural statement.

5. Roswell, New Mexico — the flying saucer

Roswell’s McDonald’s has a spaceship-shaped exterior that plays on the city’s association with UFOs. McDonald’s describes the building as spaceship-shaped, while Architectural Digest characterizes it as a flying-saucer design. It is a purpose-built theme rather than a subtle adaptation.

6. Batumi, Georgia — a glass-domed modernist design

Designed by Giorgi Khmaladze, the Batumi restaurant dates to 2013, according to Architectural Digest. Its glass dome gives it a sculptural, contemporary character. The design makes this one of the list’s clearest examples of a restaurant treated as an architectural landmark rather than simply a branded box.

7. Rotterdam, Netherlands — transparent glass architecture

Mei Architects designed Rotterdam’s glass McDonald’s to emphasize views into and out of the restaurant, Architectural Digest reports. Compared with Batumi’s domed form, Rotterdam’s defining idea is transparency: the building makes its relationship with the surrounding streetscape part of the design.

8. Sedona, Arizona — teal arches against red rock

Sedona’s arches are teal rather than the chain’s familiar gold. McDonald’s says local officials were concerned that gold might distract from the natural surroundings, so the company used teal instead. Architectural Digest also connects the unusual color to Sedona’s red-rock setting. The change is a response to local visual context, not just a decorative novelty.

9. Downey, California — an early restaurant in Googie style

McDonald’s describes its Downey restaurant as the oldest operating location in its system and says its appearance has remained virtually unchanged since the 1950s. Architectural Digest notes its Googie architecture and original arches. The historical distinction is the company’s claim; check current operating status before planning a visit.

A restaurant inside an aircraft

One location goes beyond adapting a building: its dining area is inside a retired airplane.

10. Taupō, New Zealand — the DC-3 dining room

A retired Douglas DC-3 on the Taupō site has been adapted with seats as a dining area. The Smithsonian reports that the aircraft once flew passengers for South Pacific Airlines and was later used as a top-dressing aircraft before being decommissioned in 1984. The restaurant turns a piece of aviation history into part of the meal setting.

What makes these locations unusual

The strongest contrasts are between preservation and spectacle. Denton House, the Gore House, Porto’s former café, and the Budapest railway-station setting draw their character from existing structures. Roswell’s flying saucer, by contrast, makes a themed exterior the main attraction. Sedona’s teal arches respond to the surrounding landscape, while Batumi and Rotterdam use contemporary glass in very different ways: one sculptural and domed, the other focused on transparency.

These are documented architectural and historical features, not a measured ranking of the world’s most beautiful McDonald’s restaurants. The cited accounts describe the designs and histories, but they do not establish current hours, operating status, or visitor access for every site. Check directly with the local operator before making travel plans.
