That figure is disputed, and the list is not an official, exhaustive eBay ranking. Its entries also range from aircraft and property to collectibles, a charity experience and an auction of one person’s life—so “items” is broader than ordinary merchandise.
How to read this list
The prices below are those reported by Cheapism in an article first published February 9, 2024, and updated October 28, 2025. eBay’s retrospective confirms that the site has featured extraordinary high-value transactions, including a Gigayacht, but it does not provide this same ranked top ten. No source reviewed supplies a comprehensive current eBay sales ledger or a consistent ranking method. Treat this as a published list of purportedly expensive sales, not a definitive all-time record book.
The entries are ordered by Cheapism’s reported amounts, not by inflation-adjusted value. The available evidence also varies: some amounts are supported by contemporaneous reporting, while others are reported in the list without independent confirmation of a completed sale.
The 10 reported high-value eBay sales
| Rank | Lot | Reported amount | What the available evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gigayacht | $168 million | eBay’s 2020 retrospective associates a Gigayacht with the upper end of its reported high-value sales. Transaction details and independent validation are not established; the claim is disputed. |
| 2 | Gulfstream II private jet | $4.9 million | Aviation Week reported the eBay sale in 2001 and called it the highest known single-item internet sale price at the time. The $4.9 million figure is Cheapism’s reported amount. |
| 3 | Lunch with Warren Buffett | $4.5 million | Reported by Cheapism; the reviewed sources do not independently establish the completed transaction details. |
| 4 | Albert Einstein “God Letter” | $3.2 million | Cheapism reports this amount. The Los Angeles Times reported an anonymous $3 million bid shortly after the auction opened in 2012, not a completed sale at $3.2 million. |
| 5 | Albert, Texas | $2.5 million | Reported by Cheapism; independently verified completed-sale evidence was not established. |
| 6 | House with an “indestructible bunker” | $2.1 million | Reported by Cheapism; independently verified completed-sale evidence was not established. |
| 7 | Honus Wagner baseball card | $1.1 million | Reported by Cheapism; independently verified completed-sale evidence was not established. |
| 8 | Allsopp’s Arctic Ale | $503,000 | Reported by Cheapism; independently verified completed-sale evidence was not established. |
| 9 | Original Hollywood Sign | $450,000 | Reported by Cheapism; independently verified completed-sale evidence was not established. |
| 10 | Ian Usher’s “Life” | $309,000 | Reported by Cheapism; independently verified completed-sale evidence was not established. |
Is the $168 million Gigayacht really eBay’s most expensive sale?
It is first in Cheapism’s list, and eBay’s 25th-anniversary retrospective places a Gigayacht among the site’s remarkable high-value items, giving $168 million as the upper end of reported sales. But the retrospective passage does not identify a buyer or provide full transaction details, and an independent account challenges whether the specific yacht transaction can be validated. The figure is best described as a reported claim, not a confirmed sale price or a settled eBay record.

What is the strongest documented sale in the ranking?
The Gulfstream II has contemporaneous trade-press reporting. On August 20, 2001, Aviation Week reported that eBay had sold the business jet and described it as the highest known single-item sale price on the internet at that time. That supports the existence of a notable transaction and a time-limited record claim; it does not establish that the jet remains eBay’s highest sale today. The $4.9 million amount in the ranking comes from Cheapism, because the accessible Aviation Week report excerpt does not state the final price.
Why the Einstein letter price needs a caveat
The $3.2 million figure in Cheapism’s list should not be confused with the evidence in the Los Angeles Times report of October 9, 2012. That article said the handwritten letter had received an anonymous $3 million bid shortly after the auction opened. An early bid is not proof that a sale closed at that amount—or at the later list’s $3.2 million figure.

What “most expensive item” means here
This ranking combines different kinds of transactions rather than comparable consumer products. It includes physical assets such as an aircraft, a home, a town and a sign; a collectible card and a historic beer; a charitable lunch; and a personal-life auction. Their sale conditions and evidence are not presented on a consistent basis, so the figures are useful as reported examples, not as a like-for-like measure of eBay prices.
For the same reason, the ranking should not be read as a financial comparison of what these lots would cost today. The available list does not supply consistently established sale dates for all entries, and no common inflation-adjustment method is provided.
