Recommended Free Tools
The essential SEO stack is a set of capabilities, not ten subscriptions: measure search visibility and conversions, research demand, diagnose technical issues, assess competitors, and turn the evidence into decisions. Start with free first-party tools; add one paid SEO suite or a paid crawler only when a specific gap justifies it.
Here are ten tools that cover that operating loop. Google Search Console and Analytics help you understand your own site, while platforms such as Semrush and Ahrefs provide third-party estimates and competitive research—not verified records of another site’s traffic or links.
The ten SEO tools at a glance

| Google Trends | Seasonality and relative interest | Relative trend data | Free |
| PageSpeed Insights | Individual-page performance diagnosis | Lab and field data where available | Free |
| Screaming Frog SEO Spider or Sitebulb | Technical website crawling | Crawl findings | Free and paid options; limits vary |
| Semrush or Ahrefs | Competitive, keyword, and backlink research | Third-party estimates and vendor indexes | Paid plans; features and limits vary |
| Bing Webmaster Tools | Bing visibility and diagnostics | First-party Bing data | Free |
| Looker Studio | Dashboards and recurring reporting | Connected data sources | Core product free; some connectors may cost extra |
| Google Rich Results Test | Check supported structured-data eligibility | Test results for a page | Free |
“Digital marketing technology” can include a broad range of systems. For SEO, the useful subset is the technology that measures search performance, tracks what visitors do, helps investigate demand and competitors, crawls pages, tests performance, validates structured data, or reports results. A social scheduler or design app may help a marketing team, but it is not an SEO tool unless it supports one of those jobs.
1. Google Search Console: establish your Google Search baseline
Google describes Search Console as a way for site owners and SEO professionals to understand a site’s performance in Google Search. Its reports can show clicks, impressions, queries, click-through rate, average position, and breakdowns such as page, country, device, and search type. It also offers sitemap submission, URL inspection, indexing information, and reports for issues such as security, manual actions, Core Web Vitals, and supported search enhancements. Access and reports depend on the property and feature involved.

Use it to find work worth investigating
- Look for pages with substantial impressions but a comparatively low click-through rate. Review the query mix and search results before deciding whether the title, snippet, page intent, or content needs attention.
- Find queries for which a page already receives impressions. Those are candidates for improving relevance or coverage, not proof that a particular keyword deserves a new page.
- Investigate whether important URLs are discovered and indexed, and inspect individual URLs when a technical change or indexing anomaly needs checking.
- Compare performance before and after a content or technical release over a suitable period, rather than treating one day’s movement as a verdict.
Know what its numbers mean
Search Console is the baseline for your site’s Google Search performance, not a complete measure of all organic visits, revenue, or competitor visibility. Query data can be aggregated or omitted for privacy, and average position is an aggregate metric—not a promise that every searcher sees the same fixed rank. Use Analytics for on-site behavior and a third-party suite for competitor estimates.
2. Google Analytics 4: connect search visits to business outcomes
Google Analytics documentation covers the platform’s measurement features. For SEO decisions, use Analytics to examine organic landing pages, engagement, user journeys, and meaningful outcomes such as completed purchases, qualified leads, or signups. Sessions alone do not tell you whether organic traffic is valuable.
Check implementation before trusting reports
- Mark the appropriate purchase, lead, signup, or contact event as a conversion, and test that the event fires on completion rather than merely on a button click.
- Test ecommerce transactions and form submissions, check internal-traffic filters, and verify channel grouping and landing-page reporting.
- Review consent configuration, cross-domain behavior, and data-retention settings for your implementation and obligations.
- Document what counts as a conversion and who owns tracking changes so that reporting remains interpretable.
Analytics cannot explain by itself why a page ranks or does not rank. Attribution and conversion totals depend on implementation and measurement settings. Search Console and Analytics also use different systems and definitions, so their totals should not be expected to match exactly.
3. Google Keyword Planner: explore demand, not organic traffic forecasts
Keyword Planner is a Google Ads planning tool. It can help expand seed topics into related keyword ideas, estimate advertising search demand, compare location-specific demand, and organize terms by likely commercial intent. The availability and detail of metrics can depend on account setup and campaign activity.
Turn keyword ideas into a content decision
- Start with the language customers use and a small set of seed topics.
- Use Keyword Planner to discover related terms and demand ranges; do not treat an estimate as exact volume.
- Compare those ideas with the queries and pages already visible in Search Console.
- Inspect current search results for the target geography and assess intent, format, competition, and whether your business can satisfy the need.
- Choose a coherent topic cluster and page plan instead of creating a separate page for every wording variant.
Planner’s figures are intended for advertising decisions; they are not a forecast of the organic visits a page will earn. A high-volume term can attract the wrong audience or be a poor opportunity if existing results serve the need better.
4. Google Trends: interpret seasonality and changing language
Google Trends is useful when the question is how interest changes over time or across regions, rather than how many searches a term receives in absolute terms. Compare terminology, investigate seasonality, look for emerging topics, and check whether a traffic change may coincide with broader shifts in demand.
- Compare terms using the same geography and time range where possible; a trend line is relative, not an absolute search-volume count.
- Check whether you are comparing a search term with a topic, since those are not always equivalent.
- Treat low-volume “insufficient data” results cautiously. A rising line does not by itself establish commercial value or prove that a page merits publication.
Use Planner for estimated demand ranges and Trends for timing, momentum, and regional context. Neither replaces judgment about intent and business fit.

5. PageSpeed Insights: diagnose performance on real pages
PageSpeed Insights documentation explains the tool’s page-level performance diagnostics and the distinction between lab testing and field data where available. Lab data helps reproduce and investigate a test scenario; field data reflects real-user experiences for eligible pages and periods. A single test can vary with device, network, location, caching, and page state.

Use diagnostics to identify opportunities, then work with developers to assess whether a change will improve the experience without damaging functionality. Google’s SEO guidance points site owners to the Search Console Core Web Vitals report for site-wide performance information and PageSpeed Insights for individual URL testing: Google Search documentation.
A PageSpeed score is not a ranking score and does not guarantee ranking changes. Avoid treating every warning as equally urgent or making risky changes solely to raise a synthetic score. Prioritize user impact and the templates that matter to the business.
6. Screaming Frog or Sitebulb: crawl the site for technical patterns
A crawler visits URLs and reports what it can observe under its configuration. Screaming Frog SEO Spider is highly configurable for detailed crawling and extraction; Sitebulb emphasizes visual auditing and explanations. That is a difference in product positioning, not an objective verdict that one is better for every team.
What to inspect
- Response codes, redirect chains, canonicals, indexability, and robots directives.
- Titles, meta descriptions, headings, duplicate or near-duplicate pages, and internal links.
- Orphan-page candidates, XML sitemap consistency, hreflang, pagination, and faceted navigation.
- Image metadata and structured-data presence.
A crawl identifies patterns; it does not decide which issue matters commercially or editorially. Desktop tools can require configuration, memory, and technical knowledge. JavaScript-heavy sites may need rendering enabled, and large sites may need scheduled cloud crawls, APIs, or enterprise systems. Verify current licensing and URL limits on the vendor’s official page before choosing a plan.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
If a crawl appears incomplete or misleading
- Check robots.txt, crawl permissions, authentication, and staging restrictions.
- Confirm whether JavaScript rendering is required and configured.
- Review crawl limits, URL exclusions, and other settings that may have narrowed coverage.
- Compare findings with XML sitemaps and Search Console, then correct the configuration and rerun.
For a rendered site, compare raw HTML with rendered output and confirm important content and links are discoverable. A browser-visible element is not, on its own, proof that search engines can access or index it; use appropriate URL inspection and live testing as part of the check.
7. Semrush or Ahrefs: choose one primary research suite
Semrush describes an SEO toolkit covering site audits, keyword research, competitor analysis, position tracking, backlink data, and integrations with Search Console and Analytics. Ahrefs describes products including Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, backlink analysis, keyword metrics, Search Console insights, web analytics, and reporting integrations. Their functions overlap substantially, so most single-site operators should start with one rather than pay for both.

Where a paid suite earns its place
- Discovering competitor pages, keywords, and content gaps.
- Estimating keyword difficulty and traffic potential to guide research.
- Finding reported backlinks and prospects to investigate.
- Monitoring a defined set of rankings or combining research workflows in a recurring report.
These are research inputs, not ground truth. Estimated competitor traffic is not verified traffic or revenue; a keyword difficulty score is not a guarantee of ranking difficulty; and a backlink index is not the entire web. Use phrases such as “reported backlinks” or “links known in the vendor’s index,” and assess links in context rather than acting solely on a vendor’s label.
Choose by workflow and test the data you need
- Consider Semrush if broad marketing, PPC, reporting, content, and competitive-analysis integrations fit your workflow.
- Consider Ahrefs if backlink research, content discovery, and site or keyword exploration are central.
- Test each against your actual countries, industry, competitors, and target keywords. Compare database coverage, backlink freshness, keyword presentation, crawl and rank-tracking limits, content features, reporting, API access, and user seats.
These are selection criteria, not a universal ranking of the platforms. Ahrefs says a free account can provide Site Audit and backlink data for a verified domain, along with other free tools (Ahrefs FAQ). Semrush’s plan documentation describes tiered, plan-specific project, keyword, reporting, integration, trial, and user capabilities (Semrush subscriptions). Exact prices, feature limits, trials, and API terms change; confirm the current official terms for your region before subscribing.
8. Bing Webmaster Tools: check visibility beyond Google
Bing Webmaster Tools provides a separate view of Bing search visibility and Bing-specific diagnostics. It is useful for businesses serving audiences that use Microsoft properties, Windows devices, enterprise search environments, or markets where Bing has meaningful usage.
Bing’s data is not interchangeable with Google’s and does not predict Google performance. Keep it as a complementary source for the search ecosystem it measures; use Search Console for Google-specific evidence.
9. Looker Studio: make reporting useful for decisions
Looker Studio documentation covers dashboards built from connected sources. Useful inputs can include Search Console, Analytics, Google Ads, spreadsheets, databases, and approved third-party connectors. The core reporting product is available free, but a connector may have a separate fee.
Build a dashboard around decisions
- Show organic business outcomes, such as qualified leads or revenue, alongside the measurement definition.
- Show search visibility and landing-page winners or losers over consistent date ranges.
- Surface query opportunities and indexing or technical alerts that have an owner and next action.
- Track content production or update status if it helps explain changes in performance.
- Annotate major releases or business changes so a trend is not interpreted without context.
Label third-party estimates distinctly from first-party data. Document filters, attribution definitions, and connector refresh behavior. A polished dashboard can still mislead if it mixes incompatible date ranges or metrics, reports too many numbers, or lacks a clear route from observation to action.

Google’s Rich Results Test checks structured data relevant to supported rich-result experiences. Use it before and after deployment to inspect detected items and eligibility issues. For broader vocabulary reference, see Schema.org; for markup validation, use the Schema.org validator.
Rank #4
Use markup as support for the page, not a shortcut
- Choose structured data that accurately describes content visible to users.
- Test the page or code and resolve syntax or eligibility issues that apply.
- Deploy the change, then check relevant Search Console enhancement reports where available.
Valid markup may make a page eligible for a rich result; it does not guarantee that Google will display one, improve rankings, or increase clicks. Eligibility, relevance, the search feature, site quality, and Google’s systems all matter. Markup must not misrepresent or add claims absent from the visible page.
Choose a stack that fits your site and workload
Free starting stack
Begin with Search Console, Analytics, Keyword Planner, Trends, PageSpeed Insights, Bing Webmaster Tools, Looker Studio, and the Rich Results Test. Add Screaming Frog’s free version for a small enough site, after confirming the current crawl limit and licensing terms. This covers visibility, behavior, demand research, performance checks, cross-engine data, reporting, structured-data testing, and basic crawling without assuming that a paid suite is necessary.
Lean paid stack
Add one of Semrush or Ahrefs when competitor keyword discovery, backlink research, historical visibility, rank monitoring, or integrated reporting will lead to work you can act on. Pay for a crawler when site size, scheduling, rendering, or audit depth exceeds what the free workflow can handle. Subscription price alone does not improve SEO results.

Teams with many sites, large inventories, international markets, or recurring client reporting may need scheduled crawling, API access, larger crawl capacity, multi-location rank tracking, log-file analysis, anomaly monitoring, data warehousing, and workflow management. API access, reporting connectors, seats, and quotas can carry plan-specific restrictions or extra costs; verify those details before designing a process around them.
Small business, local, and specialist cases
A small local business can often begin with first-party tools, a basic crawler, and location-aware keyword research. Google Business Profile is an important adjacent technology for local visibility, but it is not a replacement for website SEO tools: Google Business Profile. Local work may also require review monitoring, location-page analysis, directory consistency, and call or direction conversion tracking.
International sites need country- and language-specific research, localized search-result checks, hreflang validation, and deliberate decisions about canonicals, currencies, shipping, and duplicate content. Third-party keyword and rank data can differ sharply by country, so specify the market when assessing it. A general-purpose suite alone does not manage the full local or international workflow.
Use the tools as one operating loop
1. Establish measurement
- Verify the site in Search Console and confirm access to the appropriate property.
- Configure and test Analytics conversions, internal-traffic handling, and relevant cross-domain behavior.
- Submit or validate the XML sitemap and check that important templates are eligible for indexing.
- Create a basic Looker Studio dashboard with clearly defined metrics and date ranges.
2. Find opportunities
- Export relevant pages and queries from Search Console.
- Investigate high-impression, low-click-through pages in the context of query intent and current results.
- Use Keyword Planner to expand topics and assess demand ranges, then Trends to check timing, terminology, and regional interest.
- Use one paid suite, if justified, to examine competitor pages and topics your site may not cover.
- Inspect search results manually before committing resources to a new page or major update.
3. Audit and validate
- Crawl the site and review indexability, status codes, canonicals, metadata, headings, internal links, and sitemap consistency.
- Compare potentially important crawl findings with Search Console instead of treating every crawler warning as an error.
- Test representative page templates in PageSpeed Insights.
- Validate relevant structured data and confirm that it matches visible page content.
4. Prioritize and measure changes
One useful internal planning heuristic is priority = impact × confidence × scale ÷ effort. It is a way to compare proposed work, not an SEO ranking formula. Consider business impact, affected URLs, confidence in the diagnosis, implementation effort, engineering or editorial dependencies, and risk of unintended consequences.
- Record the date and scope of each deployment and annotate major content, technical, and link changes.
- Measure organic outcomes in Analytics and search visibility in Search Console over an appropriate period.
- Re-crawl after technical fixes and retest performance after template or asset changes.
- Pair selected rank tracking with clicks, impressions, landing-page outcomes, and search-result features; rankings vary by location, device, personalization, search features, query interpretation, and time.
- Do not declare success based on a one-day ranking movement.
Common mistakes when buying or using SEO tools
- Buying overlapping suites by default: Semrush and Ahrefs overlap across research, backlinks, audits, and rank-related workflows. Add a second only when a specific data gap or specialist workload warrants it.
- Treating estimates as facts: Keep first-party site measurements distinct from proprietary keyword, traffic, rank, and backlink estimates.
- Optimizing a score instead of the experience: PageSpeed diagnostics and crawler health scores are clues for investigation, not search-engine verdicts.
- Tracking rankings without outcomes: A selected rank scenario is not a complete performance measure. Tie search work to qualified leads, sales, or another defined business outcome.
- Ignoring configuration: Incorrect Analytics events, permissions, crawl rendering, filters, or connector refreshes can produce confident-looking but misleading reports.
- Automating judgment: Tools cannot reliably decide which query merits a page, whether content meets users’ needs, whether a technical issue matters commercially, or which project should come first.
- Buying AI-visibility claims as a substitute for fundamentals: Vendor AI-search metrics may rely on proprietary sampling. Treat them as methodology-dependent estimates, not replacements for Search Console, editorial judgment, original research, fact-checking, and conversion measurement.
For most organizations, the sensible sequence is to establish first-party measurement, use free research and diagnostic tools, then buy one research suite or specialist capability when a real workload or data limitation appears. Tools expose evidence and opportunities; people still have to choose useful work, improve the site, and judge the results.
