Gus, a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton, is the most expensive animal-related specimen in the documented public-sale records used here. The ranking also includes living animals, but fossils are identified separately because a skeleton is not a living animal or a normal livestock transaction.
How this ranking works
“Most expensive” means the highest documented public sale or auction price in the cited record accounts. The figures are historical transaction amounts, kept in their original currencies where reported. They are not inflation-adjusted, and they should not be read as today’s asking prices or as perfectly comparable market values.
Most entries are Guinness World Records records or records reported by major news coverage. The cloned polo horse is different: its amount comes from a secondary list and is marked accordingly rather than presented as an official Guinness category record.

Dinosaur specimens: the two highest prices
1. Gus, T. rex skeleton
Gus set the top documented price in this list at Sotheby’s New York on 14 July 2026. Guinness identifies the specimen as the most expensive dinosaur bones sold at auction, and the sale surpassed Apex’s 2024 result. Because this is a fossil skeleton, the price reflects the market for scientifically important, legally traded natural-history specimens rather than the economics of owning a living animal.

2. Apex, Stegosaurus skeleton
Apex held the dinosaur-auction record after its Sotheby’s New York sale on 17 July 2024. Its result illustrates why fossil records should be separated from livestock and racing records: buyers are paying for rarity, completeness, provenance, scientific interest and museum-quality display potential.
Living animals with multimillion-dollar records
3. Forestry colt
The unnamed two-year-old thoroughbred sold at Calder Race Course in Florida in 2006. Guinness lists it as the highest price paid for a racehorse at public auction. A public-auction result is not the same as a private valuation: it records what competing bidders committed on that day, with expectations tied to racing ability, pedigree and future breeding income.
4. Seattle Dancer
Seattle Dancer was a Northern Dancer yearling sold at Keeneland in Kentucky in 1985. The record is especially notable because yearlings are purchased before their racing careers are proven. Buyers were therefore pricing bloodline strength and the possibility of future racing and stud revenues, not a guaranteed performance history.

5. Viatina-19 FIV Mara Movéis
Viatina-19’s place in the ranking requires careful wording. The reported transaction sold a 33% interest for 7 million reais, about $1.3 million, and that stake implies a whole-animal value of roughly $4 million. It was therefore a partial-ownership transaction shaped by elite cattle genetics and breeding economics, not a straightforward cash sale of the entire cow. The Associated Press report says Guinness recognized her as the most expensive cow sold at auction.

New Kim, a Belgian two-year-old racing pigeon, sold through PIPA’s auction in November 2020. Her price demonstrates how breeding lines, race performance and scarcity can create exceptional values even in a small animal. PIPA chief executive Nikolaas Gyselbrecht highlighted the result’s unusual scale because the buyer was acquiring a female, which can be especially valuable for producing future racing stock.
7. Big Splash
Big Splash was an 11-month-old red Tibetan mastiff sold in March 2011. Guinness identifies the transaction as the costliest dog sale in its record entry. The amount reflected the premium then attached to the breed’s size, appearance, pedigree and status appeal in China; it should not be treated as a normal price for Tibetan mastiffs or for dogs generally.

8. Sportsmans Double Diamond
Sportsmans Double Diamond was a Texel ram lamb sold at the Lanark auction in Scotland on 27 August 2020. The winning bid was 350,000 guineas, recorded as £367,500. For a breeding ram, the economic case is the potential value of offspring across a flock, so the auction result reflects genetics and expected breeding impact rather than meat value alone.
9. Cloned polo horse
A cloned polo horse is included because a secondary list reports a $800,000 sale. The source does not establish a date, venue or official Guinness category record, so this entry has lower confidence than the others. Cloning can carry a premium when the genetic material comes from a successful sport horse, but the reported figure should not be confused with a verified worldwide auction record.

The Angora buck sold at the Waitangi Angoras sale in New Zealand in January 1985. Its record is tied to the value of superior mohair-producing genetics and the ability to improve a breeding program. The New Zealand-dollar amount and its approximate U.S.-dollar conversion are historical figures, not a current exchange-rate quote.

What these records show
Fossil and living-animal markets are different
Gus and Apex occupy the first two places, but they are dinosaur specimens rather than living animals. If the question is limited strictly to living animals, the Forestry colt is the highest entry in this set.
Racehorses lead the living-animal records
The two largest documented prices for living animals here are thoroughbreds: the Forestry colt and Seattle Dancer. Their values were driven by a combination of racing prospects, pedigree and potential stud income.
Ownership structure can change the headline value
Viatina-19 shows why a reported “animal value” may be an implied calculation. A minority stake can establish a high valuation without anyone paying the implied full amount in one transaction.

Dates and currencies matter
The sales span 1985 to 2026 and use U.S. dollars, euros, pounds, Chinese yuan, reais and New Zealand dollars. Exchange-rate conversions in the records are useful for orientation, but they do not make the transactions directly comparable across time. None of the figures has been adjusted for inflation.
