Cars.com ranked the Tesla Model 3 as the most American-made vehicle in its 2025 American-Made Index, followed by the Model Y, Model S and Model X. The list measures several aspects of U.S. manufacturing contribution; it does not mean every part is made in the United States or establish a U.S.-only parts percentage for each model.
The 10 highest-ranked vehicles in Cars.com’s 2025 index
Cars.com announced the results on June 17, 2025. It evaluated more than 400 model-year 2025 vehicles and included 99 in the index. The ranked “cars” include SUVs and a pickup as well as passenger cars.

What Cars.com counts as American-made
The index is a Cars.com ranking, not a universal standard for what “American-made” means. Cars.com scores five factors: final assembly location; the percentage of U.S. and Canadian parts; the countries of origin for available engines and transmissions; and the automaker’s U.S. manufacturing workforce. Scores use a 100-point scale, and heavier curb weight serves as a tiebreaker when needed. Cars.com does not disclose the factor weights or full calculation.
The company says its analysis draws on NHTSA, automaker and Automotive News data, more than 173,000 Cars.com inventory vehicles, and in-person audits of around 450 dealer vehicles. Its eligibility rules exclude some vehicles, including those above 8,500 pounds GVWR, models not on sale by the spring 2025 cutoff, and models that miss sales, inventory or verification thresholds. It is therefore a defined annual index, not a census of every vehicle that could be called American-built. Cars.com explains its methodology here.

What the parts-content figure does—and doesn’t—tell you
Cars.com reported that the top ten averaged 70.3% domestic parts content in 2025. For comparison, it reported an 83.4% average for the top ten in 2006. These are Cars.com figures, not a U.S.-only parts share for any individual vehicle. The company’s lead researcher, Patrick Masterson, said: “No vehicle has ever reached 100% domestic parts content in the index’s history.” The figures and quote appeared in Cars.com’s 2025 release.
For most new vehicles, the American Automobile Labeling Act (AALA) label reports U.S. and Canadian parts content by value, along with assembly, engine and transmission origins. Because the parts-content figure combines U.S. and Canadian components, it does not reveal a U.S.-only percentage. Automakers may also report content differently by nameplate, powertrain, trim or assembly location; Cars.com may use sales-weighted averages. A nameplate’s index rank therefore cannot tell you the exact sourcing of a particular vehicle.

How this differs from other American-made rankings
The Kogod Made in America Auto Index uses a different method. Its 2025 edition has seven criteria, including headquarters and profit, labor and R&D alongside component sourcing and assembly. It asks a related but distinct question from Cars.com’s five-factor index, so the two rankings should not be treated as interchangeable leaderboards. What to check before choosing a vehicle
The index measures manufacturing contribution, not reliability, safety, quality, value or suitability for your needs. If you are comparing vehicles to buy, use the ranking as one input and check the specific vehicle rather than relying on a model name alone.

- Read the window label on the vehicle you are considering for its reported U.S./Canadian content and assembly, engine and transmission origins.
- Confirm that the trim and powertrain you want are available in your area; the index can combine variants with different sourcing or assembly details.
- Compare the vehicle’s actual price and fit for your needs separately. A high index rank does not indicate that a vehicle is the best financial or practical choice.
What shoppers said about buying American-built vehicles
In a Cars.com Consumer Survey conducted May 28–June 6, 2025, with 997 respondents, 51% said tariffs influenced them to seek American-made vehicles, 73% said they would consider an American-built vehicle to avoid tariff costs, and 74% said they would pay up to 20% more to support U.S. jobs. These are survey responses, not evidence that buying an index-ranked vehicle avoids a specific tariff or price increase. Cars.com reported the survey alongside its 2025 index.
