This is a historical 2024 watchlist, not a current ranking. The ten companies highlighted by CRN were Abnormal Security, Adlumin, Aqua Security, BlueVoyant, Cribl, Illumio, Securonix, Semperis, Snyk, and Torq. They stood out because of reported funding, revenue milestones, acquisitions, product expansion, or channel investment across fast-growing areas such as cloud security, identity protection, security-data infrastructure, managed detection and response, and SOC automation.
For investors, technology buyers, channel partners, and job seekers, the useful question is not simply which company was “hot.” It is whether each vendor had durable commercial traction, a defensible product, a credible route to market, and a category likely to remain important. The evidence below is dated to 2023 or early 2024 and relies substantially on company disclosures and CRN reporting.
What “hot” means in this list
“Hot” does not mean profitable, independently validated, dominant, or guaranteed to become a public company. This list reflects CRN’s editorial and channel-oriented selection of fast-growing security vendors. Its criteria included funding, growth, product launches, acquisitions, executive activity, and investment in partner ecosystems.
The list also reflects the security priorities of early 2024:

The 10 cybersecurity companies to watch
1. Abnormal Security
What it does
Abnormal Security focuses on email and collaboration security. Its stated differentiation is behavioral analysis: the platform learns normal communication patterns for organizations and individual users, then looks for anomalies associated with impersonation, account compromise, and business-email compromise.
Why it was worth watching in 2024
CRN reported that Abnormal said it exceeded $100 million in annual recurring revenue in August 2023. In January 2024, Jonathan Corini was appointed to lead channel sales. The company’s expansion beyond email suggested an effort to build a broader human-behavior security platform rather than remain a single-purpose anti-phishing product.
Who should care
Midmarket and enterprise organizations with substantial Microsoft 365 usage, frequent external communications, or meaningful exposure to payment fraud and vendor impersonation were the natural audience. Managed service providers and channel partners were also relevant because email incidents are common, repetitive, and costly to investigate.
Competitors and limitations
Buyers should compare it with Microsoft Defender for Office 365, Proofpoint, Mimecast, and other AI-focused email-security vendors. Behavioral detection requires access to communication metadata and organizational context, which raises privacy, governance, and data-residency questions. The reported ARR milestone indicates commercial momentum, not profitability, retention quality, or technical superiority.
What to monitor
- Expansion into collaboration platforms such as Google Workspace and Slack
- Integration depth with Microsoft and other workplace systems
- False-positive rates and investigation workflow
- Net retention and customer concentration
- Whether growth continues beyond email security
2. Adlumin
What it does
Adlumin combines managed detection and response with SIEM capabilities. Its target is the SMB and midmarket segment, where organizations may need 24/7 monitoring but cannot economically build a large internal SOC.
Why it was worth watching in 2024
CRN reported that Adlumin raised $70 million in Series B funding in October 2023. Its integrated SIEM-plus-MDR positioning matched customer demand for consolidation and made it relevant to MSPs, MSSPs, and solution providers.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWho should care
Small and midsize businesses, regulated midmarket organizations, and companies without round-the-clock security staff were the clearest potential buyers. The product could also appeal to service providers seeking a platform around which to offer managed security.
Competitors and limitations
Alternatives include Arctic Wolf, Huntress, Blackpoint Cyber, Secureworks, Sophos MDR, and internally managed Microsoft Sentinel. Buyers should establish exactly what “managed” includes: alert triage, threat hunting, containment, incident response, remediation, and compliance reporting. Log-volume limits, retention, onboarding effort, and authority to isolate systems can materially change the economics.

3. Aqua Security
What it does
Aqua Security specializes in cloud-native application protection, including containers, Kubernetes, cloud workloads, posture management, and runtime protection. Its CNAPP approach combines agentless scanning and visibility with agent-based runtime controls.
Why it was worth watching in 2024
Cloud-native infrastructure had become a central security battleground. Kubernetes environments require visibility into images, dependencies, configurations, identities, and runtime behavior. CRN reported a Kubernetes Bill of Materials launch and a $60 million extension to Aqua’s Series E, associated at the time with a valuation above $1 billion.

Cloud-platform teams, platform engineers, DevSecOps organizations, and enterprises running containers or Kubernetes were the likely buyers. Aqua could be relevant to companies seeking to consolidate several cloud-security functions.
Competitors and limitations
Competitors include Wiz, Orca Security, Palo Alto Prisma Cloud, Microsoft Defender for Cloud, Sysdig, and Lacework. CNAPP breadth can create deployment complexity and finding overload. Agentless scanning improves visibility but may not block runtime attacks, while runtime agents can introduce operational and performance concerns. Buyers should decide whether they need a full CNAPP or a narrower container-security tool.
What to monitor
- Runtime prevention versus detection-only capability
- Coverage across managed and self-hosted Kubernetes
- CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code integrations
- Remediation quality rather than raw finding counts
- Whether CNAPP consolidation reduces or increases operational burden
4. BlueVoyant
What it does
BlueVoyant provides managed detection and response, threat intelligence, and security services, with a strong focus on Microsoft environments.
Why it was worth watching in 2024
CRN reported that the company grew by 80% over the preceding year, acquired Conquest Cyber, and raised more than $140 million in Series E funding in connection with the deal. The strategy combined operational security services, intelligence, assessment, and compliance support around a technology stack used widely by government and enterprise organizations.
Who should care
Government agencies, state and local governments, Microsoft-centric enterprises, and regulated organizations seeking outsourced detection and response were the most natural audience.
Competitors and limitations
Alternatives include Microsoft itself, Arctic Wolf, Secureworks, Red Canary, Expel, and eSentire. A Microsoft focus can be an advantage for standardized environments but less attractive for heterogeneous estates. Buyers should distinguish human 24/7 response from alert forwarding and clarify staffing, threat hunting, containment authority, escalation, and acquisition integration.
What to monitor
- Integration with Defender, Sentinel, Entra, and Purview
- Government-sector growth
- Whether growth is organic or acquisition-driven
- Customer retention and service scalability
5. Cribl
What it does
Cribl provides infrastructure for routing, processing, filtering, and controlling observability and security data. Organizations can move data from sources such as Splunk to data lakes or other destinations while applying transformations and controls.
Why it was worth watching in 2024
Security teams were struggling with escalating log volumes and SIEM costs. CRN reported that Cribl exceeded $100 million in ARR in October 2023, reaching that milestone in four years. Its vendor-neutral “choice and control” proposition appealed to organizations reassessing SIEM architecture and trying to avoid sending every event to an expensive analytics platform.

Who should care
Large enterprises, security and observability engineering teams, Splunk users, and organizations operating data lakes or multiple analytics platforms were the likely buyers.
Competitors and limitations
Alternatives include native SIEM pipelines, cloud data services, Splunk tooling, Elastic, and other observability-data platforms. Cribl does not replace detection engineering or a SIEM. Aggressive filtering can remove evidence needed for investigations or compliance, and the additional control layer requires careful governance.
What to monitor
- Measured cost reduction after implementation
- Data-loss, retention, and export controls
- Whether filtering affects detection quality
- Support for security, observability, and compliance workloads
6. Illumio
What it does
Illumio specializes in zero-trust segmentation. Its technology aims to contain breaches and limit lateral movement by controlling communications among workloads, endpoints, applications, and cloud environments.
Why it was worth watching in 2024
Ransomware resilience and breach containment were major enterprise priorities. Segmentation addresses the period after an attacker gains initial access. CRN highlighted Illumio’s expansion from data centers into cloud, multicloud, hybrid, and endpoint environments, as well as its channel investment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Who should care
Large enterprises, critical-infrastructure operators, and organizations with flat or poorly documented networks were the clearest prospects. It was particularly relevant to companies seeking to reduce the blast radius of ransomware.
Competitors and limitations
Alternatives include native cloud controls, Palo Alto Networks, Cisco, Akamai Guardicore, and other microsegmentation or identity-centric zero-trust products. Segmentation does not prevent every initial compromise. Policy discovery and testing can be difficult, and poorly planned rules can interrupt business-critical applications.
What to monitor
- Deployment time and policy-management usability
- Coverage for legacy systems and operational technology
- Measured reduction in attack paths
- Integration with incident-response workflows
7. Securonix
What it does
Securonix offers SIEM and security analytics. Its Unified Defense SIEM was positioned around cloud-native architecture and integration with Snowflake, separating large-scale data storage from security analytics.
Why it was worth watching in 2024
SIEM buyers were reconsidering legacy architectures, retention limits, and ingestion costs. CRN reported that the platform supported up to 365 days of “hot” searchable data through the Snowflake Data Cloud, according to the vendor. That figure should not be assumed to apply universally; architecture, contract, and plan terms matter.
Who should care
Enterprise SOCs, Snowflake customers, managed-security providers, and organizations replacing legacy SIEMs were the likely audience.
Competitors and limitations
Competition includes Microsoft Sentinel, Splunk, Google Chronicle, Elastic Security, IBM QRadar, and Exabeam. SIEM migration is a high-risk project involving data onboarding, detection content, analyst workflows, and compliance retention. Long searchable retention is not the same as useful detections or fast investigations.

8. Semperis
What it does
Semperis focuses on identity-driven cyber resilience, particularly Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID. Its model covers protection before an attack, detection during an attack, and recovery after compromise.
Why it was worth watching in 2024
Identity compromise can enable privilege escalation, persistence, and disabling of security controls. Hybrid identity creates additional paths between on-premises Active Directory and cloud identity services. Semperis addressed the recovery phase, which is often less developed than prevention and detection.
Who should care
Microsoft-heavy enterprises, governments, regulated organizations, identity teams, and companies preparing for ransomware or domain-controller compromise were the best-fit buyers.
Competitors and limitations
Alternatives include Microsoft native tooling, Quest, Okta, Ping Identity, Silverfort, and internally developed recovery controls. Identity resilience is not a substitute for privileged-access management, tested backups, or disaster-recovery procedures. Buyers should test whether the product can restore a trustworthy identity environment under pressure and meet their recovery objectives.
What to monitor
- Active Directory and Entra ID coverage
- Recovery speed and integrity validation
- Detection of privilege escalation and persistence
- Integration with PAM and identity-governance tools
- Evidence of successful recovery exercises
9. Snyk
What it does
Snyk provides developer-focused application-security tools covering open-source dependencies, source code, containers, infrastructure as code, and application-security posture management.
Why it was worth watching in 2024
Software supply-chain security had become a major enterprise concern. CRN highlighted Snyk’s acquisition of Helios in January 2024 and its ASPM expansion after acquiring Enso Security in 2023. The company was also preparing for a larger channel push. Reports about possible IPO plans were speculation and were not a confirmed company announcement.
Recommended Free Tools
Who should care
Software companies, enterprise development organizations, DevSecOps teams, and application-security groups managing large dependency inventories were the natural audience.
Competitors and limitations
Alternatives include GitHub Advanced Security, GitLab, Mend, Veracode, Checkmarx, Sonatype, Semgrep, and native cloud-provider tools. Developer adoption is the central commercial and operational test: tools that create excessive noise or slow delivery may be rejected. More findings do not necessarily mean more risk reduction.
What to monitor
- Developer adoption and remediation rates
- Prioritization quality
- Runtime-to-code correlation
- Support for AI-generated code
- Source-control, CI/CD, ticketing, and cloud integrations
10. Torq
What it does
Torq offers no-code security orchestration and automation, which it calls security “hyperautomation.” The platform is intended to automate alert triage, investigation, enrichment, response actions, and other repetitive SOC workflows.
Why it was worth watching in 2024
SOCs faced alert overload and staffing shortages. CRN reported a technology deal with Deepwatch and a $42 million funding addition in January 2024, bringing reported total funding to $120 million at that time. A major MDR customer using Torq as infrastructure suggested traction with service providers as well as enterprises.

Competitors and limitations
Alternatives include Palo Alto Cortex XSOAR, Splunk SOAR, Tines, Swimlane, Microsoft Sentinel automation, and custom Python or serverless workflows. No-code does not mean no maintenance. Workflows need testing, ownership, versioning, monitoring, approval gates, and rollback plans. Automation can make an incorrect containment decision faster.
What to monitor
- Production integration quality
- Human approval for destructive actions
- Workflow observability and rollback
- Mean time to respond before and after deployment
- Whether AI features improve outcomes without reducing control
The market themes behind the watchlist
Platform breadth versus focused products
Aqua, Securonix, and Snyk were expanding toward broader platforms. Abnormal, Illumio, Semperis, and Torq were more closely associated with defined security problems. Broad platforms may simplify procurement and reduce vendor count, but they can be harder to deploy. Focused products may perform strongly in a specific use case while adding another tool to the stack.
Identity became a primary security control plane
Semperis represented the rising importance of Active Directory and cloud identity. Abnormal’s behavioral approach addressed the human side of identity abuse, while segmentation and MDR vendors addressed what attackers can do after obtaining access. The common lesson is that identity security cannot be evaluated independently from privilege management, recovery, endpoint controls, and incident response.
Recommended Free Tools
SIEM economics became strategic
Cribl and Securonix reflected a customer problem that is partly technical and partly financial: security teams collect more data than ever, but ingestion, processing, storage, and retention can become expensive. Data-routing tools and cloud-native SIEMs can help, but cost savings should be measured against detection coverage, investigation speed, compliance needs, and operational complexity.
Automation addressed the SOC labor shortage
Adlumin and Torq represented different approaches to scarce security talent: outsource more operations, automate more workflows, or combine both. Neither approach eliminates the need for clear procedures and accountable decision-makers. A vendor should explain what happens when an alert is ambiguous, a workflow fails, or containment could interrupt the business.
Channel distribution was a meaningful signal—but not proof of quality
CRN’s selection emphasized partner investment. Channel strength can improve deployment capacity and give smaller customers access to expertise. It does not prove that a product detects threats better. Prospective customers should clarify who owns the relationship, who handles support and response, how escalations work, and whether pricing or service scope changes through a partner.
How to evaluate one of these companies
- Define the problem. Specify whether the priority is phishing, cloud posture, SIEM cost, identity recovery, lateral movement, application risk, MDR, or SOC automation.
- Map existing controls. Determine whether Microsoft, Google, a SIEM, an endpoint platform, or a cloud provider already supplies enough baseline functionality.
- List required telemetry. Ask what data, agents, permissions, APIs, retention, and integrations the product needs.
- Test the operational workflow. A demonstration is not production proof. Use a pilot to measure false positives, remediation time, analyst effort, and user or developer acceptance.
- Clarify response authority. For MDR and automation, establish whether the vendor may isolate endpoints, disable accounts, block traffic, or make other changes without approval.
- Calculate the complete cost. Include implementation, integrations, data ingestion, retention, professional services, partner margins, training, and internal staffing.
- Check resilience and exit terms. Review data export, retention after cancellation, portability, incident support, service-level commitments, and what happens if the vendor is acquired.
- Measure outcomes. Use metrics such as reduced response time, fewer successful email compromises, shorter recovery time, lower investigation cost, improved remediation rates, or reduced SIEM spend.
What investors and partners should watch
Funding and reported ARR can identify momentum, but they do not establish profitability or durable value. The more useful signals are:
- Renewal and net-retention quality
- Customer concentration and dependence on a small number of large accounts
- Organic growth versus acquisition-driven growth
- Time to deploy and time to measurable value
- Partner-sourced pipeline and channel conflict
- Product expansion that adds value rather than complexity
- Ability to coexist with or complement Microsoft and hyperscaler platforms
- Evidence that customers use the product in production, not only in pilots
For anyone considering an employer, vendor relationship, or private-market investment, company-reported milestones should be treated as starting points for diligence. Private-company funding rounds are historical financing events, not guarantees of future returns or liquidity.
Bottom line
This 2024 list was most useful as a map of where cybersecurity spending and product development were concentrating—not as a prediction that all ten companies would become major public companies. Abnormal Security, Adlumin, and BlueVoyant addressed human-layer security and managed operations; Aqua and Snyk targeted cloud and software risk; Cribl and Securonix addressed security-data architecture; Illumio and Semperis focused on containment and identity resilience; and Torq pursued SOC automation.
The strongest long-term signals to monitor are durable customer retention, measurable operational outcomes, partner-led distribution, and the ability to expand into a platform without sacrificing usability. Because this article is a historical 2024 snapshot, any claim about a company’s status, products, valuation, pricing, or market position after that period requires separate current research.
