The highest reported average salaries in the cited 2025 Dice snapshot belonged to professionals who reported service-oriented architecture (SOA), Amazon Redshift, Elasticsearch, Ruby, Apache Kafka, Redis, JDBC, containers, Go, and REST. SOA led the figures at $152,026, while Amazon Redshift ranked second by salary even though the original CIO presentation placed it ninth.

Those numbers are a historical U.S. salary snapshot—not a promise that learning one technology will produce the same income. The data mixes architecture patterns, programming languages, databases, messaging systems, APIs, and infrastructure tools. Your experience, location, industry, employer, role, and ability to operate these technologies in production matter at least as much as the keyword on your résumé.

The 10 highest-paid skills by reported average salary

The ranking below reorders the technologies strictly by the salary figures reported in the 2025 Dice data, as summarized by CIO on April 10, 2025. The figures are average annual salaries associated with respondents reporting each skill. They should be read as associations, not skill-specific raises.

Rank Skill Reported average salary Typical career area Beginner access
1 Service-oriented architecture (SOA) $152,026 Enterprise and integration architecture Low
2 Amazon Redshift $143,103 Cloud data engineering and analytics Moderate
3 Elasticsearch $139,549 Search, observability, and platform engineering Moderate
4 Ruby $136,920 Backend and application development Moderate
5 Apache Kafka $136,526 Streaming and data platforms Low to moderate
6 Redis $136,357 Performance, caching, and infrastructure Moderate
7 JDBC $135,486 Java enterprise development Moderate
8 Containers $135,358 Cloud, DevOps, and platform engineering Moderate
9 Go $134,727 Cloud-native and systems development Moderate
10 REST $133,970 Backend APIs and systems integration High

The average U.S. technology salary in the underlying Dice report was $112,521. CIO’s summary also reported a 2.2% increase in technology salaries during 2024 and said technology workers earned 5.7% more than peers in other industries. These figures describe the broader market; they do not establish that any one listed skill caused the difference.

What this ranking does—and does not—measure

A salary-by-skill list is not a controlled test. It does not compare two otherwise identical workers before and after learning Kafka, Go, or Redshift. A high average may partly reflect:

  • years of experience and seniority;
  • management or architecture responsibility;
  • geography and local cost of labor;
  • industry, employer size, and business complexity;
  • scarcity of people who can operate the technology reliably;
  • the criticality and scale of the systems involved;
  • education, certifications, and other skills held by the same professional; and
  • the maturity of the technology and the companies that use it.

Dice reported that technology professionals with more than 15 years of experience averaged $133,047, while entry-level professionals with two years or less experienced a salary decline. That is a reminder that experience is a major confounding factor: a senior engineer may report Redis because Redis is part of a complex production system, not because Redis alone commands a $136,357 salary.

The safest interpretation is: these were the highest-paid skills in the cited Dice snapshot. It is not: learning one of them guarantees the listed salary.

1. Service-oriented architecture (SOA): $152,026

SOA organizes applications and business capabilities as independently accessible services. It is an architectural discipline rather than a programming language or single product. The highest-paying association in this list likely reflects the seniority of the people responsible for designing and governing complex enterprise systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Typical roles: Enterprise architect, solutions architect, integration architect, and senior backend engineer.

What you need alongside it: APIs, messaging, domain modeling, identity and security, governance, cloud architecture, observability, and the ability to explain technical trade-offs to business stakeholders.

Where it is used: Large enterprises, financial services, telecommunications, government systems, and organizations integrating many older and newer applications.

Portfolio idea: Document an integration architecture for several simulated business systems. Show API boundaries, message flows, authentication, failure handling, versioning, and a migration plan.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Main trade-off: SOA is valuable for enterprise integration but is not interchangeable with microservices. The approaches overlap around service boundaries, yet differ in design assumptions, governance, deployment patterns, and operational models.

Best learning route: Start with HTTP and APIs, then study distributed systems, messaging, security, domain-driven design, cloud architecture, and architecture documentation. A certificate alone is unlikely to substitute for system-design experience.

2. Amazon Redshift: $143,103

Amazon Redshift is a managed cloud data warehouse used for large-scale analytics. Its salary association fits data engineering, analytics engineering, data architecture, and cloud architecture work where inefficient queries, poor modeling, or unreliable pipelines can affect an entire organization.

Typical roles: Data engineer, analytics engineer, data architect, BI engineer, and cloud architect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prerequisites: SQL, relational and dimensional modeling, ETL or ELT, data quality, AWS fundamentals, query optimization, and data governance.

Portfolio idea: Build a small warehouse from public data. Load raw tables, create a dimensional model, transform the data, document data-quality checks, and demonstrate how you investigated a slow query.

Ensure a secure & long-lasting usage everyday & weekend.Serve you well as professional office work bag,slim bagpack, back to college backpacks. 15.6 inch travel laptop backpack for daily using and organize

Main trade-off: Redshift experience can be lucrative but is tied to an AWS-centered data ecosystem. Learn the underlying warehouse, modeling, and SQL concepts so your experience transfers beyond one vendor.

Readers should not assume a fixed cloud cost for experimentation. Redshift uses usage-based pricing, and the bill depends on region, workload, storage, and concurrency. Use budgets, spending alerts, temporary credentials, and teardown procedures before creating cloud resources. The official Amazon Redshift page and AWS Skill Builder are starting points.

3. Elasticsearch: $139,549

Elasticsearch is a distributed search and analytics engine. It is used for full-text search, log analysis, observability, and other workloads that require fast retrieval across large volumes of data.

Typical roles: Search engineer, platform engineer, observability engineer, backend engineer, and data engineer.

Prerequisites: Linux, distributed systems, indexing, ingestion pipelines, APIs, security, data modeling, and production monitoring.

Portfolio idea: Create a searchable document or product catalog and add an ingestion pipeline, relevance tuning, filtering, authentication, dashboards, and failure monitoring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Main trade-off: A basic search demo is not evidence of production expertise. Employers need people who understand shard planning, indexing costs, retention, access controls, backups, and operational failure modes.

Elastic provides learning and training resources at elastic.co/training. Check current course and platform pricing before buying; costs and product plans can change.

4. Ruby: $136,920

Ruby is a programming language widely associated with web application development, especially Ruby on Rails. It is comparatively approachable for a new programmer, but the higher-paid jobs generally require production Rails experience rather than basic language familiarity.

Typical roles: Ruby or Rails developer, backend engineer, platform engineer, and automation engineer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prerequisites: Rails, SQL, testing, Git, deployment, cloud operations, and enough JavaScript or frontend knowledge to integrate an application end to end.

Portfolio idea: Build a tested Rails application with authentication, a relational database, background jobs, an API, automated deployment, logging, and a clear README explaining design decisions.

Main trade-off: Ruby can pay well in organizations with an established Ruby ecosystem, but its job market is narrower than the market for some broadly requested enterprise and cloud skills. Investigate local and remote vacancies before making it your sole specialization.

Free documentation is available through Ruby-lang.org. Paid training is optional; a working, tested project may be more persuasive to a career changer than several introductory certificates.

5. Apache Kafka: $136,526

Apache Kafka is a high-throughput, low-latency distributed event-streaming platform. It supports systems that move and process events continuously, including data pipelines, operational workflows, and event-driven applications.

Typical roles: Data engineer, streaming engineer, platform engineer, backend engineer, and site reliability engineer.

Prerequisites: Event-driven architecture, Java, Scala, or Python, Kafka operations, schemas, partitions, replication, consumer groups, delivery semantics, monitoring, and distributed-systems fundamentals.

Portfolio idea: Build a streaming pipeline that publishes events, validates schemas, consumes them in separate consumer groups, handles retries and duplicates, and exposes lag and throughput metrics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Main trade-off: Kafka is powerful but has a steep operational learning curve. Knowing how to create a topic is not the same as managing partition strategy, replication, retention, security, upgrades, and recovery.

Confluent offers training at confluent.io/training. For a beginner, first learn SQL, messaging concepts, Linux, networking, and basic distributed systems.

6. Redis: $136,357

Prerequisites: Data structures, networking, persistence, high availability, application performance, failure recovery, and the database or application stack surrounding Redis.

Portfolio idea: Add Redis caching to an API, measure latency and hit rates, set expiration policies, simulate an outage, and document what happens when stale or unavailable data is returned.

Main trade-off: Caching can improve performance while introducing consistency, invalidation, memory, and recovery problems. A credible project should explain why a cache is needed and what the application does when it fails.

Redis offers introductory learning resources at redis.io/learn. Hosted-service pricing was not included in the salary data and should be checked separately before use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. JDBC: $135,486

JDBC, or Java Database Connectivity, is the standard Java interface for connecting applications to relational databases. It is a foundational enterprise-development capability, although high compensation generally comes from combining it with strong Java, SQL, and application engineering.

Typical roles: Java backend engineer, enterprise application developer, database engineer, and integration engineer.

  • Comfortable To Carry: Lay-flat laptop bag includes ergonomically contoured, padded shoulder straps, adjustable compression straps, airflow back padding, and a reinforced, molded top handle

Main trade-off: Go is relatively focused and practical, but it is not a substitute for systems knowledge. Learning syntax without understanding concurrency, networking, or operations will limit the roles you can target.

Go’s official learning resources are free at go.dev/learn.

10. REST: $133,970

REST is an architectural style commonly used for web APIs. It is the most accessible starting point in this list because HTTP and API fundamentals transfer across languages, cloud providers, and industries.

Typical roles: API engineer, backend developer, integration engineer, and cloud engineer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prerequisites: HTTP, authentication and authorization, API gateways, OpenAPI, testing, versioning, rate limits, error handling, security, and observability.

Portfolio idea: Create a documented API with authentication, pagination, validation, consistent errors, rate limiting, versioning, automated tests, monitoring, and a deployed example client.

Main trade-off: REST endpoint syntax is only the beginning. Poorly designed APIs create security, compatibility, performance, and maintenance problems.

Salary is not the same as demand

The highest salary association is not necessarily the best career bet. A niche technology may produce a high average because it is concentrated among senior professionals, while a broader skill may appear in far more job postings and offer more entry points.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ceipal’s 2025 analysis of more than 78,000 contingent IT and engineering job listings found Java, cloud computing, Oracle, and .NET among leading desired skills. That illustrates the difference between salary association and job volume: the technologies at the top of a compensation list are not automatically the technologies employers request most often. See the Ceipal analysis for its methodology and distinctions.

Broader employer investment points in another direction. Skillsoft surveyed more than 5,100 IT decision-makers and professionals globally and reported that 65% saw skill gaps. Its top investment priorities for 2025 were AI and machine learning at 47%, cybersecurity and information security at 42%, and cloud computing at 36%; 72% of IT decision-makers planned to address gaps by training existing staff. Those priorities support demand for broad technical capabilities, but they do not prove that each category paid more than every skill in this ten-item list.

Dice separately reported that professionals designing, developing, or implementing AI solutions earned 17.7% more than peers not involved in AI work. Dice also noted that AI responsibilities were concentrated among managers and executives, so seniority and role level partly explain that premium. AI’s absence from this particular ten-item list does not mean AI work paid poorly.

Which skill is best for your career goal?

Goal Most relevant choices Why
Enterprise architecture SOA Builds on integration, governance, system design, and business-scale architecture.
Broad backend portability REST HTTP and API design apply across languages and employers.

How to evaluate the return on training

Before paying for a course or certification, compare the opportunity with the job market you can realistically reach. Ask:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  • Does the skill appear in jobs available in your geography or target remote market?
  • Do you already meet the prerequisites in programming, SQL, Linux, networking, or cloud?
  • Can you demonstrate production-like work through a portfolio, not just a completion badge?
  • Is the skill transferable across employers, or is it tightly tied to one vendor?
  • Will the training include labs, current content, feedback, and troubleshooting practice?
  • Does your employer use the technology and reimburse training or certification?

Dice reported average salaries of $113,577 for certified technology professionals compared with $111,359 for those without certifications—a difference of about $2,218 in that sample. This is an association, not proof that certification caused the higher salary. Certifications are most defensible when they validate skills an employer already needs; they are less useful as a substitute for experience.

Free or low-cost starting points include Microsoft Learn, Google Cloud Skills Boost, Linux Foundation Training, and the official resources linked in each section. Paid subscriptions can help with structure, but check update dates, lab access, cancellation terms, and current pricing. Cloud labs can create unexpected charges, so set spending limits and remove resources when finished.

The skills that matter regardless of your specialty

Whichever path you choose, build a foundation in:

  • SQL and data modeling;
  • Linux and command-line troubleshooting;
  • networking and HTTP;
  • Git and collaborative development;
  • testing and automation;
  • cloud fundamentals;
  • identity, security, and secrets management;
  • monitoring, logging, and incident response; and
  • clear technical documentation.

These capabilities make a vendor-specific technology more useful and more portable. They also help you show an employer that you can protect reliability, security, and costs—not merely recognize a tool’s name.
