The honest 2026 answer is that no dark-chocolate bar can be called the best overall here until it has been bought and blind-tasted. This guide identifies 10 worthwhile US-market bars to compare now, explains what each is for, and shows exactly which label, allergen, price, and availability details to verify before you buy.
Editorial status: This is a research-backed purchase shortlist, not a published taste-test ranking. The ten bars below have not yet been bought and blind-tasted by this publication, so no bar is called the overall “best,” “tested,” or “reviewed.” Labels, allergens, availability, and prices should be verified from the wrapper and retailer on the day of purchase.

Quick picks: choose by the kind of dark chocolate you want
- For intentionally rustic texture: Taza Deliciously Dark 70%
- For an unroasted, salted bar: Raaka Pink Sea Salt 71%
- For organic, co-operative-sourced 70%-range chocolate: Equal Exchange Organic Very Dark 71% Cacao
- For the shortest ingredient list: Hu Simple Dark Chocolate
- For a recognizable 70% bar with extensive company sourcing claims: Tony’s Chocolonely Dark Chocolate 70%
- For portioned squares from a familiar brand: Ghirardelli Premium Dark 72% Cacao
- For a classic, widely distributed 70% reference point: Lindt EXCELLENCE 70% Cocoa
- For a less-sweet extra-dark option: Alter Eco Classic Blackout 85%
- For very dark chocolate: Chocolove Extreme Dark 88% Cocoa
- For orange-flavored dark chocolate: Theo Orange 70% Dark Chocolate
These are different kinds of bars, not interchangeable contenders. Most of the shortlist sits in the 70%–72% range, where a direct side-by-side tasting makes sense. The 85% and 88% bars belong in a separate, more intense and less-sweet comparison. Taza’s stone-ground style, Raaka’s unroasted process, and Theo’s orange flavor should also be judged for their intended use rather than against a conventional plain dark bar.

Cacao percentage is the share of cocoa-derived ingredients in the finished bar. It is useful for estimating the general sweetness-and-intensity range, but it is not a quality score or a health score. A well-made 70% bar can be more appropriate for everyday eating than an 88% bar; the latter is usually made for someone who wants far less sweetness and a more forceful cocoa profile.

Do not use the percentage alone to infer antioxidant benefits, heart benefits, mood effects, weight-loss benefits, keto suitability, or contaminant levels. FDA guidance notes that cadmium in chocolate can vary by growing area and cocoa-solids percentage, while lead and cadmium are broader food-contaminant concerns. No bar in this list should be described as “clean,” lower-metal, safe, or unsafe without current, batch-specific independent testing. If dietary exposure to contaminants concerns you, vary your diet and consult an appropriate health professional instead of relying on a taste guide.
The 10 bars to compare
| Bar | Cacao | Format in manufacturer information | Why it is on this shortlist | Label and allergen details to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taza Deliciously Dark | 70% | 2.5-ounce bar | A stone-ground option for shoppers who may enjoy a deliberately textured, less conventionally smooth bar. | Taza lists organic cacao beans, organic cane sugar, and organic cocoa butter. It says the bar is USDA Organic, Direct Trade Certified, non-GMO, gluten-free, Kosher Pareve, dairy-free, soy-free, and vegan; it also states it may contain trace tree nuts and sesame. |
| Raaka Pink Sea Salt | 71% | Single-bar format; verify current weight | An unroasted, salted option with a stated Dominican Republic Zorzal Cacao source. | Raaka lists organic cacao, cane sugar, maple sugar, cocoa butter, and Peruvian pink sea salt. The company describes its chocolate as organic, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, and kosher. Treat producer-payment comparisons as company-reported context, not independent verification. |
| Equal Exchange Organic Very Dark | 71% | 80-gram bars; official store information referenced a 12-pack | A 70%-range choice for shoppers prioritizing organic ingredients and co-operative fair-trade sourcing claims. | Listed ingredients include organic chocolate liquor, cane sugar, cocoa butter, unrefined whole cane sugar, and vanilla. Equal Exchange says ingredients are fairly traded by weight from Fair Trade co-operatives and describes the bar as vegan, soy-free, and gluten-free. The label warns it may contain milk, peanuts, tree nuts, and coconut. |
| Hu Simple Dark Chocolate | Verify from the live wrapper | Verify current bar size and format | A three-ingredient candidate for shoppers seeking dairy-free, vegan dark chocolate. | Hu lists organic Fairtrade cacao, unrefined coconut sugar, and cocoa butter, and says its dark bars are dairy-free and vegan. Its shared-equipment warning can include tree nuts, peanuts, milk, soy, wheat, and other ingredients. A short ingredient list does not make it allergy-safe. |
| Tony’s Chocolonely Dark Chocolate | At least 70% | Verify current bar weight | A familiar 70% bar for shoppers who want to weigh the company’s traceability and certification claims alongside taste and price. | Tony’s states that its beans are 100% traceable and cites Fairtrade and B Corp certification, no palm oil, FSC-certified recycled paper, and recyclable packaging. Those are company claims and are not a single comparable ethics score. |
| Ghirardelli Premium Dark | 72% | 3.5-ounce bar; segmented squares | A mainstream, portioned option that is easy to include as a reference in a 70%–72% tasting. | Ghirardelli lists unsweetened chocolate, sugar, cocoa butter, vanilla extract, and soy lecithin. It may contain milk and tree nuts. |
| Lindt EXCELLENCE | 70% | 3.5-ounce bar | A classic, broadly available 70% reference bar. | Lindt lists chocolate, sugar, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, and bourbon vanilla beans. It lists soy and says the product may contain milk and tree nuts. |
| Alter Eco Classic Blackout | 85% | One-pack offering; verify bar weight | An extra-dark option for a separate, less-sweet comparison. | Alter Eco lists organic cacao beans, organic cane sugar, organic cocoa butter, and vanilla beans, plus 4 grams of added sugar per serving. It may contain milk, hazelnuts, almonds, coconut, and soy. |
| Chocolove Extreme Dark | 88% | Official information referenced a 12-bar case; verify single-bar retail availability | The highest-cacao candidate on this list, intended for very-dark-chocolate fans. | Chocolove lists cocoa liquor, sugar, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, and vanilla. It contains soy and is made in a facility that processes milk, eggs, peanuts, and tree nuts. Do not turn “high polyphenol” marketing into a health claim. |
| Theo Orange Dark Chocolate | 70% | Official information referenced a 12-pack; verify practical single-bar availability | A flavored bar to evaluate for orange-and-dark-chocolate pairing, not as a plain-bar winner. | Theo lists organic/fair-trade cocoa beans, cane sugar, cocoa butter, and orange essential oil; it labels the product vegan, soy-free, gluten-free, and kosher. It is made on equipment handling milk, wheat, and tree nuts, in a facility handling peanuts, eggs, and sesame. |
How to buy the right bar for your budget and palate
Start with the comparison band
If you are new to darker chocolate, begin with 70%–72%. That is the most coherent group here: Taza, Raaka, Equal Exchange, Tony’s, Ghirardelli, Lindt, and Theo all sit around that level, though their processing and added flavorings can make them taste dramatically different.
Choose Alter Eco 85% or Chocolove 88% when you specifically want less sweetness and more cocoa intensity. It would be misleading to knock those bars for not tasting like a 70% bar, just as it would be misleading to call them automatically better because their percentage is higher.

Decide whether texture is part of the appeal
Taza is explicitly stone-ground and should be expected to differ from a finely refined, smooth bar. That can be a feature for a shopper who likes a more tactile, rustic style and a drawback for someone seeking a classic melt. Raaka’s unroasted approach likewise deserves to be assessed on its own flavor and texture profile, not assumed to resemble conventional roasted chocolate.
Read the actual wrapper for dietary needs
“Vegan,” “dairy-free,” “gluten-free,” and “soy-free” claims do not erase a shared-equipment or facility warning. For a severe food allergy, the purchased wrapper—not an older product page or a retailer listing—is the controlling source. In this group, Hu’s broad shared-equipment warning and Theo’s equipment/facility statement are especially important examples of why shoppers should not reduce the decision to the front-of-pack claim.

Compare value by ounce, not shelf price alone
Prices, stock, shipping restrictions, and pack sizes move frequently. A direct-store price is not a universal grocery-store price, and a case price is not comparable with a single-bar price until both are normalized. When comparing two buyable packages, use:
price per ounce = package price ÷ total ounces in the package
For example, a $6.99 3.5-ounce bar works out to about $2.00 per ounce before tax; a multi-pack needs its total bar count and each bar’s weight included in the denominator. Check expiration or best-by dates too—especially on specialty and single-origin offerings—before buying a large quantity.
Price and availability: what should be rechecked
Manufacturer pages cited in the research showed examples including $6.25 for a one-pack of Alter Eco Classic Blackout, $6.99 for Tony’s 70%, $7.95 for Ghirardelli 72%, and $6.99 for Lindt EXCELLENCE 70%. Raaka was listed from $7.00, while Chocolove information referenced a case price. These are not current universal shelf-price claims and should not be used to declare a winner on value without a same-day, like-for-like calculation.
Before publication or purchase, confirm the exact SKU, package weight, seller, price, best-by date, ingredient panel, and allergen statement. Theo’s official information referenced a 12-pack rather than a single-bar option, and Chocolove’s referenced a 12-bar case, so practical retail access matters as much as a product page. Avoid adding a sold-out bar merely because it has a strong reputation; availability can change by origin and harvest for single-origin chocolate.

How this shortlist should be turned into a real tested-and-reviewed ranking
A defensible “best dark chocolate bars” story requires current retail samples and blind tasting. Buy unopened samples—ideally during the same week—from reliable retailers. Record the retailer, purchase date, price paid, package size, best-by date, lot code, country-of-origin information if printed, full ingredients, allergen statement, and photographs of both sides of each wrapper.
- Use at least three tasters where possible and conduct two blind sessions on different days.
- Remove packaging, cut comparable pieces, assign randomized three-digit codes, and vary serving order for each taster.
- Serve at ordinary room temperature with water and plain crackers between samples.
- Do not reveal brand, cacao percentage, price, or certification claims until all scoring is complete.
- Compare the 70%–72% bars together and the 85%–88% bars together; taste flavored, stone-ground, and unroasted styles in appropriate subgroups.
A practical 100-point scoring sheet allocates 10 points to appearance/temper and snap, 10 to aroma, 20 to texture and melt, 25 to cocoa flavor balance, 15 to finish, 10 to verified current value, and 10 to fitness for the stated use case. Preserve individual sheets, state the panel size and tasting dates, and say whether results are means or medians. If a tie-break is needed, explain it plainly rather than hiding it in a score.
Shopping-link disclosure
If this article later includes affiliate links, place a plain disclosure immediately before them. A category link may use the phrase dark chocolate bars, but the exact retailer result, seller, package size, price, and allergy label must be checked before publishing. Shopping availability must never influence a tasting result. Tony’s official US product information signals an Amazon purchase route for its 70% bar, but that is a buying option—not evidence of quality or a ranking.
Bottom line for shoppers
For a first comparison, buy two or three conventional 70%–72% bars, such as Ghirardelli, Lindt, Tony’s, or Equal Exchange, then add Taza if you are curious about stone-ground texture or Raaka if you want an unroasted salted profile. Move to Alter Eco 85% or Chocolove 88% only when you want a distinctly darker, less-sweet experience. In every case, let the current wrapper settle the ingredient, allergen, certification, and package-size details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Have these bars been tested and ranked by this publication?
No. The research supports a purchase shortlist and a testing protocol, not a completed editorial tasting. A legitimate tested ranking should use current retail samples, blind sessions, recorded prices and labels, and disclosed panel results.

Is a higher cacao percentage always better?
No. It mainly signals the expected sweetness-and-intensity range. Compare 70%–72% bars with one another, and assess 85%–88% bars as a separate extra-dark group.
Does vegan or dairy-free mean a bar is allergy-safe?
No. A dairy-free or vegan claim can coexist with a shared-equipment or facility warning. Check the exact wrapper, particularly if you have a severe allergy.
What is the fairest way to compare prices?
Divide the exact package price by the total ounces in that package. Do not compare a case price or direct-store price with a single grocery-bar price without normalizing size first.
The Bottom Line
No overall winner should be published until current retail bars are blind-tasted. Until then, choose by cacao range, style, ingredient and allergen needs, real package price per ounce, and current availability.
