For dry, peeling cuticles or frequent hangnails, a cuticle oil can soften the surrounding skin and make at-home nail care easier. There is no single best formula for everyone: the right pick depends on how you want to apply it, how quickly you want it to absorb, and whether fragrance bothers your skin. Here are 10 products featured in current beauty guides, with the distinctions those guides report—not a new independent test or definitive ranking.

How to choose a cuticle oil

  • Match the applicator to your routine. A brush or pen can make it easier to target the nail folds; a dropper may dispense more than you need. A portable applicator can be convenient away from home, though the package may affect value.
  • Consider texture and finish. Products described as thicker may suit someone who prefers a richer feel, while quick-drying or non-greasy options may be more comfortable during the day.
  • Check the formula if you have sensitive skin. Conditioning oils are common, but fragrance and essential oils can bother some people. Review the ingredient list and stop use if irritation develops.
  • Compare quantity and price where you shop. Prices, package sizes, inventory, and regional availability change; check current listings rather than relying on an old price comparison.

The selections below are grouped by the distinctions cited by the publications, not ranked against one another. Their editorial picks reflect those publishers’ guides; the products have not been independently tested for this article.

OPI ProSpa Nail and Cuticle Oil

Vogue names this its overall pick and describes a thicker texture, recommending a small amount per application. That richer feel may appeal if you prefer a more substantial coating, but use sparingly if you dislike residue. Vogue’s guide.

Sally Hansen Vitamin E Nail & Cuticle Oil

Vogue identifies this as a value pick, and Shop TODAY includes it as a budget option. It is worth comparing with other drugstore choices when price is a priority; confirm the current package size and price at your retailer. Vogue’s guide and Shop TODAY’s guide.

How to use cuticle oil and protect the nail folds

Cuticle oil conditions the cuticle and nearby skin; it is not a treatment for infection or a substitute for medical evaluation. Allure quotes dermatologist Melinda Conroy, DO, describing the cuticle as a barrier: “They are a natural barrier to prevent bacteria, yeast, and fungus from getting into the nail folds.” Avoid casually cutting or pushing back the cuticle, which can compromise that protective area. Allure’s guide.

Build a routine you will maintain

Experts quoted by the publications recommend regular use, but they do not give one universal schedule. Shop TODAY quotes a manicurist recommending daily application, often before bed; Allure quotes an expert suggesting morning, evening, and at least one daytime application. Treat these as different expert routines, not a required dose. Shop TODAY’s guide and Allure’s guide.

Apply with care

  1. Use the applicator to place a small amount on the cuticle and surrounding nail-fold skin.
  2. Gently massage it into the skin rather than cutting or forcefully manipulating the cuticle.
  3. Adjust the amount and timing to the formula’s feel and your routine; reduce or discontinue use if it irritates your skin.

Shop TODAY quotes board-certified dermatologist Hadley King, MD, saying that keeping the skin around the nails moisturized supports its barrier function and can make pathogens less likely to penetrate. If you notice signs of infection or a persistent nail-fold problem, seek medical advice rather than relying on oil. Shop TODAY’s guide.

Which one should you start with?

  • For a richer texture: consider OPI ProSpa, which Vogue describes as thicker, and begin with a small amount.
  • For a value-oriented starting point: compare Sally Hansen Vitamin E and Cuccio Milk & Honey at current local prices and package sizes.
  • For less greasy or quicker-feeling wear: Vogue’s Manucurist pick or Allure’s Mineral Fusion pick align with those stated preferences.
  • For portable application: L’Occitane is noted for its applicator, with dispensing and value tradeoffs worth checking.
  • For a premium-brand option or a specific listed formula: compare Chanel or GELCARE, verifying current availability and reading ingredient information before purchase.
