Others can be poor financial bets when rare parts, specialist labor, or a small gap between condition-based values make it hard to justify the work. Neither list guarantees a cheap restoration: the car’s condition, your skills, local labor rates, parts choices, and desired finish matter more than its nameplate.
What makes a classic car affordable to restore?
A low purchase price is only the entry fee. The main cost drivers are how complete the car is, the amount of structural rust or damage, parts availability, mechanical and electrical complexity, paid labor, and whether you want a usable driver or a concours-quality finish. Problems often become visible only after parts are removed, and a restoration can involve hundreds of labor hours. Hagerty’s U.S. restoration guide reported average mechanic labor charges of upwards of $70 an hour in 2022; that is a historical estimate, not a current or universal rate. Get local quotes before setting a budget. Hagerty’s classic-car restoration cost guide also cautions that most owners should restore for enjoyment rather than assume they will recover all spending when they sell.
The ten cars below are better understood as approachable candidates, not a ranked list of the cheapest restorations. Hagerty’s 2022 U.S. owner-restoration list identifies parts access, production volume, shared components, and mechanical familiarity as advantages; it does not supply comparable total budgets for these models. Read Hagerty’s list of classic cars owners can restore.
10 classic cars that may be more approachable projects
-
Ford Mustang
The long-running model has broad parts availability and a large body of repair knowledge, and many maintenance jobs are relatively straightforward. That support cannot make structural rust cheap: inspect the rails, floors, cowl, battery area, and other known trouble spots before buying.

Chevrolet Camaro
Hagerty includes the Camaro among owner-restoration candidates. Its place on this list reflects that project-oriented support, not a guarantee that any particular car is complete, sound, or inexpensive.
-
Pontiac Firebird
Parts and model choices can make the Firebird worth considering, especially if you are open to a less collectible version with a lower initial purchase price. Verify availability for the specific year and trim you want.
-
Chevrolet Chevelle
The Chevelle’s popularity and extensive aftermarket engine-parts supply can help owners source components. Body condition and the cost of making the car match a particular trim or specification still determine the project’s scale.
-
Oldsmobile Cutlass
Broad GM A-body parts support is a practical advantage. Before treating shared components as a cost saving, confirm that the parts you need fit your exact year and configuration.

Chevrolet El Camino
Examples are relatively easy to find, and under-hood work is described as accessible. Exterior parts can be harder to source, so check the condition of the body and trim rather than budgeting from mechanical work alone.
-
Ford Model A
Parts support and relatively straightforward open-wheel construction make the Model A a candidate for hands-on work. The right starting point still depends on completeness, prior repairs, and the skills or help available to you.
-
Chevrolet Nova
Hagerty describes the Nova as having a lower acquisition cost than a Chevelle, along with good parts availability. That is a relative purchase-price observation, not a promise that Nova restoration costs will be low.
-
Mercury Cougar
Shared parts with the Mustang and lower asking prices for less sought-after examples can improve the starting economics. Check which components are shared and which trim-specific pieces may take extra searching.

Volkswagen Beetle
Millions were produced, and mechanical parts and reconditioned engines are readily available, according to Hagerty UK. Rust can undo that advantage: inspect the body and chassis carefully before committing.
10 cars that can be financially difficult to restore
There is no supported, current ranking of the ten costliest cars to restore, and the models below are not presented as a precise ranking. They are examples drawn from a Hagerty UK valuation analysis published in 2020, which compared the difference between fair- and concours-condition values in its UK Price Guide, and from its warnings about rare-car parts and specialist work. A value gap is not a restoration quote: it does not tell you what the work costs, whether a car can be restored within that amount, or what it will sell for.

Ferrari 250 GT SWB
In Hagerty UK’s 2020 comparison, the fair-to-concours value difference was 6% of the concours value, the smallest percentage spread among the examples cited. That narrow spread can leave little apparent room for restoration spending, but it is not a cost estimate.
-
Ferrari 365 California Spider
Its fair-to-concours difference was 10% of concours value in the same historical UK analysis. Scarcity and original-part needs can add risk beyond what that percentage says.

Lamborghini 350 GT
The analysis put its fair-to-concours difference at 11% of concours value. Treat that as a valuation relationship from the period, not as a forecast of current values or restoration costs.
-
TVR Cerbera 4.5 Speed Eight
Hagerty UK placed the Cerbera among the examples at the bottom of its mixed comparison of value differences and percentages. That metric flags potential weak restoration economics; it does not establish a universal bill.
-
Porsche 924 Carrera GT
This Porsche also appeared among the low examples in Hagerty UK’s combined comparison. Before buying, investigate the exact car’s condition, parts needs, and availability of appropriately experienced labor.

Maserati Ghibli 4.7
The Ghibli 4.7 was another low example in the 2020 comparison. Rare-car parts and specialist work can make a project hard to price from market values alone.

Ferrari 250 GTO SI
Hagerty UK reported a £13.12 million fair-to-concours value difference for this model in its 2020 UK Price Guide analysis. A large difference is not proof that restoration is affordable or profitable; work on a rare car can require costly specialist parts and expertise.
-
AC Cobra Daytona
The same analysis reported an £8.364 million fair-to-concours difference. That figure describes a historical valuation spread, not a restoration budget or expected return.
-
McLaren F1
Hagerty UK reported a £5.74 million fair-to-concours difference in 2020. The size of the spread should not be mistaken for money available to spend on a restoration.
-
Porsche 356 Pre-A Cabriolet
This car illustrates the difference between value uplift and restoration economics. Hagerty UK warns that concours work and rare parts may be prohibitively expensive; Porsche 356 parts specialist Richie King told the publication that good-quality original Pre-A parts typically cost three to four times as much as reproductions.

Hagerty UK’s article also discusses the Bentley S2 Continental drophead and Porsche 356 A Coupe as cars with large spreads under its combined comparison, while warning that rare parts and concours restoration can be prohibitively expensive. Those examples reinforce the distinction between a valuation gap and a restoration budget. The analysis covered more than 2,000 cars in the UK Price Guide across four condition levels at the time; its author, John Mayhead, cautioned that “statistics rarely provide definitive answers.” See Hagerty UK’s 2020 classic-car valuation comparison.

-
Choose the finish you can afford
Decide whether you want a safe, roadworthy driver or a highly detailed concours car. A more modest finish can reduce the scope, while show-level standards may require more precise materials, parts, labor, and documentation.
-
Inspect completeness and structure first
Look for panel misalignment, signs of filler or repainting, rust bubbles, fresh underseal that could hide damage, and corrosion in sills, floors, box sections, chassis rails, and suspension mounting points. Check concealed spaces where access permits; an illuminated automotive borescope can help inspect a sill cavity, but it cannot certify the car as rust-free. A marque specialist’s pre-purchase inspection is valuable when structural repairs may be involved. Hagerty UK’s classic-car buying guide outlines inspection considerations.
-
Check model-specific rust traps
For a 1964–73 Mustang, Hagerty UK calls out rear chassis rails, boot-floor drop-offs, floorpans, scuttle drains and cowls, front rails, battery trays, and convertible sill bracing. Consult its Mustang buyer’s guide. For a Beetle, inspect the sill and bulkhead, inner wheelarches, area under the rear seat, floorpan, spare-wheel well, wing and running-board mounts, chassis edges, and frame head. See Hagerty UK’s Beetle buying guide.

Price parts by exact year and specification
Separate widely available mechanical or reproduction parts from scarce original trim and model-specific components. Popularity can ease sourcing, but rare original parts may cost multiples of reproductions or be unavailable at a sensible price. Ask suppliers about fitment, lead times, and whether an item is original, reproduced, or reconditioned.
-
Compare quotes with the finished car’s likely value
Get local body, mechanical, paint, and upholstery estimates, including contingencies for disassembly discoveries. Compare the total cash outlay with realistic values for cars in the finish and condition you expect—not with a concours figure unless you intend to fund concours work. Used parts, salvage yards, and owner clubs can help control costs, but quality and fit still need checking.
When does restoration make financial sense?
It is most defensible when you value owning and using the finished car, can do a meaningful share of the work, have a sound and complete starting vehicle, and can source parts without paying a premium for every component. If resale matters, model the purchase, parts, paid labor, transport, storage, and likely repairs together. A popular car is not automatically a profitable project, and a rare car is not automatically a bad one; the condition and scope determine whether the numbers work.
