Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and Poland have published budget estimates that make them useful starting points for planning a solo trip. Laos is another low-cost candidate, but the available figures do not support a comparable daily-cost estimate. These are not a verified ranking of the world’s ten cheapest destinations: the evidence does not establish ten destinations on the same cost basis. Your actual total depends on your passport, departure airport, dates, lodging, and travel style.
How to use this shortlist
A destination’s daily spending estimate is not the price of a vacation. Add round-trip airfare, travel between cities or islands, lodging, meals, local transport, activities, insurance, and any entry-related costs that apply to your passport. A cheap room and inexpensive meals may not offset a costly flight or a string of domestic connections.
Compare like with like. A dorm-bed budget is not a private-room budget, and backpacker estimates should not be treated as mid-range costs. The figures below are publisher estimates, not guaranteed prices or results from a harmonized survey. Where an estimate is available, its source, travel style, and scope are stated.
Five places to consider for a solo vacation
1. Vietnam
Vietnam is a strong starting point if you want to compare lower-cost regional travel with a mix of cities, food, and local transport. The estimates vary considerably by travel style: RealRoute’s 2026 estimate is about $32 per person per day for a mid-range trip that includes a private room, meals, local transport, and one activity, but excludes international airfare. Going’s 2026 guide suggests $30–$50 per day for backpacker-style travel and $80–$150 per day for a comfortable mid-range trip. Those are separate estimates with different methods, not one continuous price range.

Going says costs vary by region, with Hue and the Mekong Delta less expensive than Da Nang or Phu Quoc. Vietnam Tourism’s 2026 comparison also presents Vietnam as potentially less expensive than Thailand while noting that advance planning is useful. Treat these as planning clues, not a guarantee that one itinerary will cost less than another.
2. Thailand
Thailand offers a broad range of trip styles, but costs can rise when an itinerary adds islands and transfers. Going suggests $25–$50 per day for a backpacker-style trip using hostels, street food, and public transport; its 2026 guide notes that islands may cost more than northern cities. In a separate comparison, Vietnam Tourism lists a $35–$50 daily budget for Thailand and describes its tourist infrastructure as comparatively established. The estimates use different methods and should not be combined into a single forecast.

Season and location affect the experience as well as the bill. The U.S. Department of State’s Thailand guidance, issued August 20, 2026, identifies seasonal air-quality concerns in Chiang Mai and other northern provinces: check the current advisory when choosing dates and destinations.
3. Indonesia
Going’s 2026 guide suggests about $40 per day for Indonesia, but that editorial estimate is not a fixed rate or a whole-trip cost. It recommends looking beyond higher-priced areas such as Canggu and the Gili Islands, naming Yogyakarta, Lombok, Flores, and Sumatra as alternatives to consider. Island-hopping can add transport costs, so compare the cost of reaching each stop as well as the local daily budget.

4. Poland
Poland is a European option in this shortlist. Going’s 2026 guide suggests $31–$50 per day for backpacker-style travel and says Kraków and Wrocław undercut Warsaw for accommodation and dining. The figure is a publisher estimate, not a solo-specific ranking; check lodging for your dates and include the cost of getting between cities before comparing it with destinations in Asia.
5. Laos
RealRoute includes Laos among its lower-cost destinations, but the available evidence does not establish a comparable solo daily estimate. Do not infer a particular trip budget from a general low-cost label.

Safety and health planning matter alongside cost. The U.S. Department of State advisory issued July 30, 2026 warns about scams, including risks associated with motorbike rentals, says medical care can be limited—especially in rural areas—and recommends considering medical evacuation insurance. Review its current Laos travel guidance before booking. These U.S. government advisories apply to U.S. travelers; readers should consult their own government’s advice.
Build a realistic solo-trip budget
- Set your complete trip dates and route. Price flights from your actual departure airport, then add intercity or island transport. Do not compare a local daily budget with another destination’s airfare-inclusive total.
- Choose a lodging assumption. Price a dorm bed, guesthouse, or private room for the same dates. A private-room estimate such as RealRoute’s Vietnam figure should not be compared directly with a hostel-based backpacker budget.
- Specify how you will eat and get around. Decide whether your estimate assumes street food or restaurant meals and public transport or taxis. If you expect to use more expensive options, budget for them rather than relying on a backpacker figure.
- Add activities and one-off costs. Check major entry fees, guided excursions, and any domestic flights or long-distance journeys not covered by a daily estimate.
- Check season, entry rules, and travel advice. A lower-price month may bring weather trade-offs. Verify current entry requirements for your passport and check your government’s destination advice close to departure.
Affordability is not a safety rating
A low daily estimate says nothing by itself about personal safety, healthcare access, entry eligibility, or the suitability of a route for a first-time solo traveler. Government advice is specific to a jurisdiction and can change. For example, the U.S. State Department’s Thailand guidance issued August 20, 2026 says most U.S. citizens do not need a visa for stays under 60 days and must register online before arrival; it also directs travelers to check applicable entry rules, passport requirements, and onward-ticket or funds requirements. That guidance is not a rule for other passports. Confirm current requirements with the relevant official authority before booking.
