Current published recommendations point to ten candidates across those categories, but the available evidence does not confirm a definitive top-ten ranking or a single set of best model years. Treat the list below as a shortlist, then judge each car by its generation, powertrain, service history, condition and price in your market.
Which used BMW models are worth considering?
What Car?’s May 20, 2026 ranking excerpt names six models, while Car and Driver’s February 25, 2026 article adds three. Together they make a useful shortlist, not a verified ranking of ten: the accessible information does not establish the remaining entry or complete year recommendations. The model years below are only those explicitly covered by Car and Driver, not claims that every example in those spans is equally desirable.
| Model | Best fit | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| 3 Series | A sporty, balanced sedan | Ranked first in What Car?’s 2026 top-ten excerpt; precise year spans and further model-level details are not stated in the accessible excerpt. |
| 5 Series | A larger luxury sedan or estate | Ranked second in the excerpt. What Car?’s survey figures favor petrol over diesel in its reported comparison, but do not establish a verdict for every individual car. |
| 1 Series | A compact premium hatchback | Ranked third in the excerpt; year spans and further model-level details are not stated there. |
| 4 Series | A sharper coupe, with less practicality than a sedan | Ranked fourth. What Car? reported different reliability ratings for the current and 2013–2022 generations. |
| X3 | A family SUV | Ranked fifth; the excerpt describes it as related to the 3 Series. What Car? reported separate petrol and diesel survey results. |
| iX3 | A practical electric SUV | Ranked tenth and given a 96.7% reliability rating in What Car?’s reported survey. The accessible excerpt does not establish full year recommendations. |
| i4 (2022–present) | An electric car for buyers with a workable charging plan | Covered by Car and Driver in its February 2026 used-car article. EPA-estimated range varies with year, trim and wheel/tire configuration, so check the exact vehicle’s EPA configuration. |
| X1 (2016–2022) | A practical subcompact luxury SUV | Covered by Car and Driver. Its article’s then-current U.S. $30,000 budget framing reported some earlier or higher-mileage examples below $20,000; this is not a current price guarantee. |
| M235i/M240i (2014–2021) | A sporty two-door | Covered by Car and Driver, which reported examples within its then-current U.S. $30,000 budget framing. Availability and prices change by market and condition. |
| Unconfirmed tenth candidate | Not established | The available ranking excerpt names six models, and the separate Car and Driver article adds three. The remaining entry in a ten-model list cannot be verified from these sources. |
The What Car? ranking page was updated May 20, 2026, but its full text was not accessible for verification; only the excerpted model names and details can be relied on here. Car and Driver’s price examples reflect a U.S. budget framing from February 2026, not a quote for today’s listings. Compare local asking prices for cars with similar year, mileage, trim, history and condition.
How much should you trust BMW reliability ratings?
Survey results can help narrow a search, but they describe groups of cars rather than diagnose a specific used vehicle. What Car? gave BMW a 94% brand rating and placed it eighth among 31 brands in its latest survey, as reported in its article updated May 20, 2026. Its model-level figures also vary by generation and powertrain:

- iX3: 96.7% reliability rating in What Car?’s 2026 survey reporting.
- X3: 94.3% for petrol and 92.4% for diesel; both versions had a reported 23% fault rate.
- 4 Series: 98.5% for the current generation versus 79.0% for the 2013–2022 generation.
- 5 Series: 96.7% for petrol versus 79.8% for diesel, with reported fault rates of 14% and 43%, respectively.
These are What Car?’s survey findings, not guarantees or universal mechanical conclusions. In particular, the 5 Series comparison does not mean every petrol example is a better purchase than every diesel one, and the 4 Series generation gap does not identify a specific fault. Read the figures as a reason to investigate the exact car, not as a substitute for inspection.
Consumer Reports says European luxury vehicles such as BMWs tend to be expensive to maintain and repair, and advises used-car buyers to seek warranty coverage or budget for repairs. It also notes that its featured brand rankings use new-car data and do not necessarily represent used-car reliability or repair costs. No reliable repair-cost total for a particular BMW is established here; the sensible financial test is whether you can absorb a repair without relying on a best-case reliability rating.

How to choose among the shortlist
Start with the job the car needs to do
- For a sedan: Compare the 3 Series if you want a sporty, balanced car with the 5 Series if you need a larger luxury sedan or estate.
- For a small premium car: Consider the 1 Series hatchback or the X1 if an SUV body and additional practicality suit you better.
- For an SUV: The X3 is the family-size candidate; the iX3 is the electric alternative. Check that its charging needs match your home, workplace and regular routes.
- For a coupe or sporty two-door: The 4 Series is the less-practical coupe choice; the M235i/M240i is another sporty option in the 2014–2021 span Car and Driver covered.
- For an EV: Compare the i4 and iX3 by body style, charging access and the exact car’s range configuration, rather than relying on one model-wide range number.
Compare actual cars, not just model reputations
Set a purchase budget that leaves room for maintenance and unexpected repairs. Then compare listings using the same criteria: price, mileage, service records, accident history, condition, powertrain and any remaining warranty. For an EV, also confirm that charging is practical for your routine and verify the range estimate for the specific year, trim and wheels. The survey results do not establish a best year or trim for every candidate, so avoid treating a model name or rating as a guarantee.
What to check before buying a used BMW
- Get the vehicle history. Review a history report for recorded accidents and mileage inconsistencies, then compare it with service invoices and the car’s condition.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Have a qualified mechanic inspect the specific vehicle before purchase. A road test and seller assurances are not substitutes for a paid pre-purchase inspection.
- Test it carefully. On a manual M235i/M240i, Car and Driver specifically recommends checking clutch behavior during the road test. For any model, note warning lights, unusual noises, drivability concerns and discrepancies between the listing and the car.
- Check recalls by VIN in the United States. Use NHTSA’s recall lookup for the exact vehicle, then ask a BMW dealer to confirm and address any unrepaired recall. The lookup does not show recalls already repaired; newly announced recalls may not appear until affected VINs are identified, and some recalls more than 15 years old are omitted unless the manufacturer offers additional coverage.
- Read warranty terms, not just the label. If the vehicle is sold as BMW Certified Pre-Owned, confirm eligibility and obtain the vehicle-specific contract. BMW USA says eligible CPO vehicles have more than 300 miles and fewer than 60,000 miles; BMW reviews a CARFAX or AutoCheck report and maintenance history, performs a 360-degree inspection, reconditioning, diagnostic checks and a road test. Its page describes one year of unlimited-mile limited protection after expiration of the original 4-year/50,000-mile warranty. Coverage terms, exclusions and geography matter, so verify the actual contract.
BMW USA also describes battery-capacity-loss coverage for eligible 2022–2025 BMW Certified EVs with retail delivery dates from March 1, 2026: eight years or 100,000 miles from first in-service, whichever comes first. Confirm that the particular EV and delivery date qualify, and read the applicable warranty terms.

How to make the final decision
Choose the model whose body style and powertrain fit your life, then let the individual car earn its place through its records, inspection, recall status and warranty terms. A lower asking price may not be a bargain if the history is incomplete or the car leaves no room in your budget for upkeep. If the inspection reveals unresolved issues, compare another example rather than assuming a strong survey rating will protect you.
