For a first car under $10,000, start with these ten used models: the 2013 Toyota Camry, 2013 Honda Accord, 2014 Toyota Corolla, 2014 Honda Civic, 2015 Subaru Legacy, 2015 Mazda3, 2015 Honda Fit, 2015 Subaru Outback, 2017 Ford Fiesta and 2013 Volvo XC70. Kelley Blue Book named them in its June 30, 2025 list of used cars under $10,000; they are candidates to shop for, not a guarantee that a sound example is available at that price today. The right choice depends on the specific car’s condition, history, insurance cost and fit for the new driver.

Ten first-car candidates to consider

Kelley Blue Book’s list offers a starting point, not a ranking of the safest, most reliable or least expensive cars to own. Compare the exact year, trim, engine, mileage and maintenance history of each vehicle you find.

  1. 2013 Toyota Camry: KBB highlights comfort, fuel efficiency—especially in the hybrid—and family-friendly transportation. Check the exact powertrain and the condition of the individual car.
  2. 2013 Honda Accord: KBB describes a spacious, comfortable cabin and balanced driving. Some examples may have the well-equipped EX-L trim; prioritize condition and features the driver actually needs over trim level.
  3. 2014 Toyota Corolla: A compact, straightforward option. KBB notes the LE’s automatic transmission and basic conveniences; verify which equipment is present on the specific car.
  4. 2014 Honda Civic: KBB points to fuel economy, handling and comfort. The Civic Si is a sportier performance variant, not interchangeable with ordinary trims for a first-car decision.
  5. 2015 Subaru Legacy: Standard all-wheel drive may suit winter weather or gravel roads. KBB lists both the lower-output 2.5i and more powerful 3.6R; compare power, handling and insurance for the driver.
  6. 2015 Mazda3: Available as a sedan or hatchback, it combines practical body styles with engaging driving, according to KBB. The 2.0-liter and more powerful 2.5-liter versions are distinct choices. IIHS/Consumer Reports also includes qualifying 2014–18 Mazda3 models in its 2026 Good Choices list; the applicable build-date rule is explained below.
  7. 2015 Honda Fit: Its small footprint and flexible cargo space can work well for city use. KBB says the model can reach up to 40 mpg highway; this is a source-stated maximum, not a result verified for a particular car or driving conditions.
  8. 2015 Subaru Outback: Standard all-wheel drive, ground clearance and passenger and cargo room are useful for some buyers. KBB also discusses a 256-hp six-cylinder version; a first-car buyer should weigh power, handling and insurance rather than defaulting to the most powerful trim.
  9. 2017 Ford Fiesta: Offered as a sedan or hatchback, with a broad engine range. KBB includes higher-performance ST and turbocharged variants; do not assume every trim has the same power or suitability for a new driver.
  10. 2013 Volvo XC70: An all-wheel-drive wagon with a premium cabin and an available turbocharged six-cylinder, per KBB. Its age and premium equipment make a detailed inspection, maintenance-history review and insurance quote particularly important; the available sources do not quantify its repair costs.

Use current safety guidance as a separate filter

In May 2026, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Consumer Reports published a list of 45 used vehicles starting below $10,000 that offer good crash protection and are suitable for young drivers. The list is a safety-focused cross-check, not evidence that every car in KBB’s older ten-car selection meets the same requirements.

IIHS/CR’s current table includes the 2014–18 Mazda3, built after October 2013, and the 2014–25 Honda Civic as Good Choices. Its listed median prices for the earliest applicable model years are $6,900 for the Mazda3 and $8,100 for the Civic. These are Black Book retail medians from April 2026, rounded to $100—not asking-price caps or a promise that a particular example will cost that amount.

Other safety-list options include the 2017–25 Hyundai Elantra, 2014–25 Subaru Impreza and 2014–25 Chevrolet Malibu. IIHS lists median prices for their earliest applicable years of $6,100, $8,000 and $5,800, respectively, also based on Black Book April 2026 data. These figures do not mean every later model year costs less than $10,000.

IIHS says every vehicle on its used-car list has curb weight above 2,750 pounds, a Good driver-side small-overlap front rating, standard electronic stability control, and Consumer Reports scores of at least 3 out of 5 for braking and emergency/routine handling and at least 2 out of 5 for controls/display usability. Best Choices have additional automatic emergency braking and headlight requirements; do not assume those additional features apply to every Good Choice.

How to choose among the cars

There is no supported all-in cost or reliability ranking for these ten models. Judge the car you can actually buy, rather than assuming a model’s reputation guarantees a good example.

  • Condition and records: Review the title and vehicle-history report, look for maintenance documentation, and arrange an independent mechanic’s inspection. KBB emphasizes that an individual car’s condition and history matter more than year or trim unless a specific feature or capability is needed.
  • Safety for the exact car: Check crashworthiness and crash-avoidance equipment for the specific model year and trim. Do not transfer a rating or feature from another year or version.
  • Insurance and ownership budget: Get an insurance quote using the exact vehicle and driver before purchase. Include fuel and likely maintenance in the budget; the sources do not establish comparable insurance or repair-cost figures for all ten.
  • Fit and driving demands: Consider passenger and cargo needs, local weather, parking, and whether the engine and drivetrain feel appropriate for a new driver. All-wheel drive may be useful in some conditions, but it is not a substitute for safe driving or suitable tires.
  • Recalls: Check open recalls for the particular vehicle and confirm how any required repair will be handled before buying.

What “under $10,000” means in practice

KBB’s ten-car article was published June 30, 2025, while IIHS/CR’s safety list and medians were published in May 2026 using April 2026 Black Book data. Neither source guarantees current local availability or the price of a specific car. Listings vary with location, mileage, title status, condition and market changes. Treat the budget as a shopping target and leave room for inspection, immediate maintenance and registration costs rather than spending the full amount on the asking price.
