The lowest credible prices identified are roughly R33–R39.50 per month when paid annually or for multiple years, while established providers commonly start around R84–R109 per month. Compare the amount charged today, VAT, domain registration and renewal, backups, email limits, migration, and the price after the initial term—not just the advertised monthly figure.

What “cheap” should mean
Use four separate measures:
- Monthly commitment: what you pay without prepaying a year.
- Annual effective price: annual charge divided by 12.
- Two- or three-year effective price: lower per month, but with more cash locked up.
- Renewal price: what applies after the introductory or prepaid period.
Show the first invoice, renewal, domain registration and VAT separately. Truehost, for example, lists Starter at R35 monthly, R400 annually and R33 per month when billed triennially; the page also displays features such as SSL, backups, email and migration, but its pages differ on cPanel versus DirectAdmin. Confirm the exact checkout configuration at Truehost’s cart.

VAT can change the apparent bargain
Truehost’s hosting page labels some prices excluding VAT, while xneelo states that its prices include VAT. At South Africa’s 15% standard VAT rate, R35 excluding VAT would be R40.25 including VAT, but use the actual checkout total rather than applying that calculation automatically to every provider.
Check whether the domain is really free
“Free domain” normally means free registration for selected extensions, usually for the first year and only on qualifying annual plans. Afrihost lists selected extensions including .co.za, .site, .online, .store and .tech. Truehost ties a free .co.za domain to annual plans. Domains.co.za advertises selected free registrations and migration on eligible packages. Domain renewal is a separate future cost.
Provider-by-provider guide
Truehost — cheapest long-term option
Truehost is the strongest starting point when your priority is the lowest effective cost and you can prepay. Its published Starter figures include 10 websites and 30 GB SSD storage, with SSL, backups, email, migration and a one-click installer advertised on plan pages. Verify whether the selected plan uses cPanel or DirectAdmin, whether the displayed amount excludes VAT, and the renewal price.

Hostking — value for multiple small sites
Hostking’s comparison snapshot points to roughly R34.50 per month when paid annually, with 50 GB storage and 25 email accounts advertised. Those competitor figures come from a provider-owned comparison and should not be treated as independent testing. Confirm the current plan, annual total, VAT, renewal and CPU, RAM and inode limits at Hostking.
Rank #2
Avoid it if: you require independently measured performance or a nationally dominant support brand.
Afrihost — established beginner choice
Afrihost offers local-market support, Softaculous installation for WordPress and Joomla, and selected free domains. The entry plan has been cited around R84 per month, but verify the exact Linux plan, storage, billing term and promotion at Afrihost.
Avoid it if: your site is storage-heavy and the entry allocation remains restrictive.
HostAfrica — local data-centre alternative
HostAfrica is worth considering when a South African hosting option and a Cape Town data-centre choice matter. Confirm that the specific plan—not merely the company—uses the location you want, and check backup retention, restore access and renewal pricing.
Avoid it if: the checkout does not clearly state server location, backups or the post-promotion price.

xneelo — established, support-led choice
xneelo advertises South African hosting, daily backups, an included SSL certificate, unlimited traffic, a 99.9% network-uptime figure, 24/7 support, WAF and DDoS protection. These are provider claims, not independent measurements. Pricing is stated as VAT-inclusive, and the compared entry plan does not include a free domain. See xneelo and its web-hosting features.
Recommended Free Tools
Avoid it if: the only goal is the lowest first-year price or a bundled free domain.
Domains.co.za — feature-heavy bundle
Domains.co.za combines hosting with selected free-domain registration, free migration on eligible WordPress packages and daily off-site Acronis backups. Confirm exact storage, mailbox counts, eligibility and renewal at Domains.co.za.
Avoid it if: you need only minimal hosting and will not use the bundled services.
1-grid — annual domain-and-hosting bundle
1-grid is suited to buyers who want one annual payment covering a domain and hosting. A comparison signal of about R1,069 per year is roughly R99 per month, but check what renews at that price and whether monthly billing is unavailable at 1-grid.

telaHosting — lowest-price challenger
July comparison coverage placed telaHosting near R20 per month. That unusually low figure makes verification essential: inspect support channels, backup frequency and retention, storage and inode limits, VAT, migration scope and renewal before paying at telaHosting.
Elitehost — smaller-provider alternative
Elitehost belongs on a shortlist for direct comparison, but a current price and complete plan specification were not responsibly established here. Confirm the official checkout, support terms, backups, renewal and upgrade path at Elitehost before treating it as a best pick.
Hostinger — international alternative
Hostinger offers beginner-oriented tools and WordPress features, but introductory prices are commonly shown in USD. Currency movements, renewal pricing, plan-specific email limits and foreign support or data-centre considerations can erase the apparent saving. Check the current offer at Hostinger.
Match the plan to the website
- Static or brochure site: basic shared hosting is usually sufficient.
- Small WordPress blog: prioritise automated SSL, backups, PHP resources and a simple installer.
- Several client sites: compare website count, databases, CPU and inode limits—not only storage.
- WooCommerce: require reliable restores, sufficient PHP workers, staging or an upgrade route, security response and dependable transactional email.
- Email-heavy business: compare mailbox storage, aliases, sending limits, spam filtering and SMTP rules; shared hosting email may not suit newsletters.
- Node.js, Python, SSH, Redis or scheduled jobs: verify that the plan supports them or budget for managed WordPress, cloud or VPS hosting.
“Unlimited bandwidth” does not mean unlimited performance. Shared servers still enforce CPU, RAM, concurrent-process, PHP-worker, database, inode, cron and fair-use limits.
Backups, security and migration questions
Backups
xneelo advertises daily backups; Domains.co.za advertises daily off-site Acronis backups; Truehost advertises daily or regular backups on its plan pages. Ask how many restore points are retained, whether databases and email are included, whether you can self-restore and whether restoration costs extra. Keep an independent copy because an on-account backup may be inaccessible after suspension, compromise or filesystem failure.

Security
Included SSL is now baseline, not a complete security programme. xneelo advertises SSL, WAF and DDoS protection; Truehost advertises automated SSL. Compare malware scanning or removal, account isolation, two-factor authentication, server controls, WordPress update responsibility and incident support rather than treating all “secure” claims as equivalent.
Migration and control panel
Truehost advertises free migration and one-click installation; Domains.co.za advertises free website migration on its WordPress package; Afrihost advertises Softaculous. “Free migration” may cover one website only and may exclude email, databases or fixing an invalid backup. Confirm whether the dashboard is cPanel, DirectAdmin or proprietary, and whether it includes DNS editing, file management, staging, Git or SSH.
Local servers, support and speed
Separate three claims: a company based in South Africa, support handled locally and servers physically located in South Africa. Also ask where backups and email are stored. A local server can reduce latency for South African visitors, but a CDN, image optimisation, good theme and WordPress configuration often matter more for a small site. A provider’s 99.9% uptime claim is not an independent performance result; 99.9% still permits about 43 minutes of downtime in a 30-day month, before considering maintenance exclusions and measurement method.

How to calculate the real cost
Two-year cost = first-term charge + second-term renewal + domain registration/renewal + VAT + mandatory add-ons
Record the following for every candidate:
- Monthly price and whether monthly billing is available.
- Upfront annual or multi-year payment.
- VAT status and checkout total.
- Domain registration price, qualifying extension and renewal.
- Renewal price for hosting after the initial term.
- Mailbox, backup, migration or security add-ons.
- Cancellation, refund and transfer conditions.
Annual or triennial billing lowers the effective monthly figure but increases the cash requirement, switching cost and risk if the project ends early. Keep your domain with a separate registrar if reducing host lock-in is more important than having one consolidated invoice.
A practical decision tree
- One basic site and uncertain duration: choose monthly local shared hosting.
- Lowest long-term cost: compare annual or triennial totals after VAT, domain and renewal.
- Several small sites: choose a quantified multi-site plan and inspect resource dashboards.
- Business email is central: compare mailbox limits and use a dedicated mail service for significant sending volumes.
- South African audience: choose a confirmed local data centre or add a CDN.
- Busy WordPress or online shop: choose the provider with a credible managed WordPress, cloud or VPS upgrade path, not merely the cheapest entry tier.
Transparent scoring model
If you want to rank providers yourself, use these weights:
- 25%: two-year total cost, including VAT, domain and renewal.
- 20%: SSL, backups, email, installer and storage.
- 15%: local relevance, including ZAR billing, support and confirmed location.
- 15%: transparency of CPU, RAM, PHP, inode and traffic limits.
- 10%: support channels and migration scope.
- 10%: security and recovery controls.
- 5%: upgrade path to managed WordPress, cloud, VPS or reseller hosting.
Do not award a high score simply for “unlimited” features. Quantified limits and clear fair-use language are more useful.
The Bottom Line
For the lowest credible long-term price, start with Truehost or Hostking but verify VAT, renewal and resource limits. Choose xneelo or Afrihost when established local support matters more than the rock-bottom price; consider Domains.co.za for bundled migration and off-site backups. Whichever provider you select, calculate the two-year total and keep an independent backup before committing.
