An answering service can protect missed sales, reduce the need for an in-house receptionist, and extend coverage beyond normal business hours. The best choice depends on your call volume, whether you need a human or AI receptionist, and the tasks agents must handle. Compare the full monthly cost—not just the advertised base price—because providers may bill per minute, per call, or add fees for setup and features.

The comparison below uses publicly listed prices checked in August 2026. Per-minute plans can cost more than the advertised price when calls exceed included minutes or run longer than expected.

10 best answering services at a glance

Service Best for Starting price Billing Coverage
Ruby Polished live receptionists $250/month for 50 minutes Per minute 24/7 available

Best fit: Law firms, medical practices, consultants and other businesses where the caller experience matters.

Watch for: Calls are billed by the minute. A short call that crosses a billing increment can cost more than a per-call alternative.

2. Smith.ai: best for lead qualification and integrations

Smith.ai separates its human receptionist and AI Receptionist products. Human plans start at $300 per month for 30 calls, with larger plans priced at $810 for 90 calls and $2,100 for 300 calls. The human service includes 24/7 live agents, lead screening, qualification, intake and CRM integrations. (Smith.ai receptionist pricing)

Appointment booking costs $1.50 per call. Call recording and transcription cost $0.25 per call, while additional CRM connections cost $0.50 per call after the first free CRM integration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The AI Receptionist has a free plan covering 25 calls per month. Paid plans start at $150 per month for 75 calls, with lower per-call rates at higher tiers. AI calls can be escalated to North America-based live agents and include features such as recording, transcription, summaries, routing and scheduling. (Smith.ai AI Receptionist pricing)

Best fit: Law firms, home-service companies and sales teams that need lead qualification or CRM updates.

Watch for: The current human plans are priced per call, not per minute. Do not assume the AI plan provides the same depth of service as the human plan.

3. PATLive: best for U.S.-based live answering

PATLive uses U.S.-based live receptionists and advertises 24/7/365 coverage. Its Basic plan costs $75 per month plus $2.60 per minute. Other plans include Starter at $250 for 75 minutes, Standard at $460 for 200 minutes, Premium at $720 for 350 minutes and Pro at $1,170 for 600 minutes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Overage rates range from $2.35 to $2 per minute, depending on the plan. The service supports after-hours handling, appointment scheduling, call screening, transfers, lead collection and emergency dispatch. Web chat is available separately, starting at $100 per month for 10 chats.

PATLive advertises a 14-day free trial and says its plans do not require long-term contracts. (PATLive pricing)

Best fit: Small businesses that want human agents, detailed scripts and a U.S.-based operation.

Watch for: Some older comparison pages still show a $235 starting price. The current public pricing page lists Basic at $75 plus usage or Starter at $250 for 75 minutes.

4. AnswerConnect: best for high-volume 24/7 coverage

AnswerConnect’s Entry plan costs $350 per month for 200 minutes and has a $49.99 setup fee. Growth costs $395 for 300 minutes with no setup fee, while Standard costs $575 for 400 minutes and includes a $49.99 setup fee. Entry overage is $2.50 per minute; Growth and Standard overage is $1.85 per minute.

Plans include live agents, 24/7 coverage, scripts, CRM integrations and desktop and mobile access. Growth and Standard also include live chat.

AnswerConnect does not charge for the first 30 interactions under 30 seconds in a billing cycle. Other interactions are rounded up to the nearest minute and billed in one-minute increments. (AnswerConnect services)

Best fit: Businesses that need continuous live coverage and a comparatively large package of included minutes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch for: Setup fees and minute rounding can change the effective cost, particularly if your business receives many short calls.

5. MAP Communications: best for low-cost, compliance-focused coverage

MAP Communications lists a Pay As You Go plan at $49 per month with no included minutes and a $1.37 charge for each additional minute. Its Business plan is $179 for 125 minutes, Enterprise is $339 for 250 minutes and Premium is $649 for 500 minutes. Overage on the larger plans is $1.30 or $1.28 per minute.

Features include a toll-free number, 24/7 coverage, free message delivery, secure portal access, customizable scripts and English and Spanish fluency. MAP also advertises HIPAA compliance, PCI-DSS certification, HITRUST and SOC 2 certification. (MAP Communications pricing)

Best fit: Healthcare, financial, professional-service and other businesses that need bilingual support or compliance-related controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch for: A provider’s compliance certification does not automatically make every customer workflow compliant. Confirm whether a business associate agreement is available, what information agents may collect, and how recordings and transcripts are handled.

6. Moneypenny: best for scalable receptionist coverage

Moneypenny’s U.S. plans start at $165 per month for 50 minutes, with a $2.28 overage rate. The 100-minute plan costs $265 with $2.12 overage, the 200-minute plan costs $422 with $1.91 overage, and the 500-minute plan costs $985 with $1.67 overage.

The service includes 24/7 answering, bilingual support, CRM integrations, a mobile app and dashboard, warm transfers, caller information, customized responses and lead qualification. Moneypenny also advertises no contracts. (Moneypenny U.S. plans and pricing)

Best fit: Businesses that want a continuing receptionist relationship and a plan that can grow with call volume.

Watch for: Older articles may refer to VoiceNation. Moneypenny has consolidated several former U.S. brands under the Moneypenny name, so older pricing may not reflect the current service.

7. Specialty Answering Service: best for the lowest published entry price

Specialty Answering Service, or SAS, lists an Economy plan at $44 per month plus $1.54 per minute. Other published options include $159 for 100 minutes, $269 for 220 minutes, $649 for 500 minutes and $1,199 for 1,000 minutes. Overage rates fall from $1.44 to $1.29 per minute as plan size increases.

SAS offers usage alerts at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the plan limit. It also has a per-call Essentials option for businesses that need basic handling rather than the full per-minute feature set. (SAS rate-plan information)

Best fit: Startups and small businesses with light call volume that want a low monthly base price.

Watch for: The $44 figure is not an all-in monthly price. Usage charges apply, so a higher-base plan may be cheaper once regular call volume is included.

8. AnswerFirst: best for true pay-as-you-go billing

AnswerFirst charges a $30 monthly base fee and lists rates from $1.55 to $1.90 per minute, depending on usage. It does not require a minute bundle or long-term contract, and rates automatically decrease as usage increases. (AnswerFirst pricing)

Its key pricing difference is one-second billing. A call lasting 1 minute and 37 seconds is billed for exactly 1 minute and 37 seconds rather than being rounded up to two minutes.

The service includes U.S.-based agents, 24/7/365 answering, call recordings, reports, message archiving, a web portal and free integrations with most business software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit: Businesses with unpredictable or low call volume that do not want to prepay for unused minutes.

Watch for: The exact rate depends on usage and account requirements. Complex customization may involve a one-time fee.

9. AnswerForce: best for home-service and legal intake workflows

AnswerForce provides live answering, after-hours coverage, appointment setting, lead capture and virtual receptionist services. It advertises after-hours, weekend and holiday coverage at no extra charge, with a real person answering calls. (AnswerForce)

The service bills by the minute and includes a set number of minutes in each monthly plan. However, its current public pages require prospective customers to request pricing rather than displaying standard plan prices. (AnswerForce answering services)

10. HelloSells: best for sales qualification and appointment setting

HelloSells uses live agents to answer calls 24/7/365. Agents can transfer selected calls, ask qualification questions, book appointments, capture messages and send contacts to a CRM. (HelloSells answering service)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The service supports after-hours-only coverage, full-time answering or forwarding calls whenever your team is busy. It also offers tailored scripts, inbound answering, appointment setting, CRM integration and real-time live chat.

HelloSells does not publish standard plan prices on its answering-service page. Its current plans form requires contact information before pricing is shown.

Best fit: B2B companies and sales teams where the main goal is to qualify prospects and schedule the next step.

Watch for: Compare quotes only after confirming whether lead qualification, transfers, appointment booking and CRM updates are included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to choose an answering service

  1. Estimate monthly call minutes and calls. Review at least two or three months of phone records. A per-call service may work well for short qualification calls, while a per-minute plan may be more predictable for longer conversations.
  2. Decide whether you need humans, AI or both. AI can reduce the base cost, but confirm how difficult calls escalate and whether an agent can transfer, schedule or collect detailed intake information.
  3. Write the call script and escalation rules. Specify which callers should be transferred, what counts as an emergency, which questions agents may ask, and when a message is enough.
  4. Check integrations before signing up. Appointment scheduling may support only a particular calendar. CRM updates, recordings, transcription and custom intake may cost extra.
  5. Price the complete package. Include the monthly fee, expected usage, overage, setup fees, appointment-booking charges, recording charges and any separate chat service.
  6. Test the after-hours experience. “24/7” can mean live humans, AI with human escalation or a basic message-taking service. Call outside business hours and confirm what happens.

What answering services usually include

Depending on the provider and plan, answering services may offer message taking, call transfers and screening, lead qualification, appointment scheduling, emergency dispatch, bilingual answering, CRM updates, call recordings and transcripts, website chat, and after-hours or holiday coverage. These features are not interchangeable: appointment scheduling may support only one calendar, while custom scheduling can require an additional fee or higher plan.

Pricing traps to check

Per-minute rounding

Many providers round calls up to the nearest minute. AnswerConnect explicitly bills most interactions in one-minute increments, while AnswerFirst uses one-second billing. The distinction matters when you receive a large number of short calls. (AnswerConnect services; AnswerFirst pricing)

Low base prices

A plan advertised at $44 or $49 may include no minutes or very few minutes. Use this calculation before comparing plans:

Monthly cost = base fee + included-plan fee + expected overage + setup fees + add-ons.

  • 14-Minute Digital Answering Machine with Call Screening — Screen calls before you pick up, check messages remotely from any phone, and see how many messages are waiting at a glance on the base unit counter. No subscription, no monthly fee — messages are stored directly on the phone.

ECO mode (ENERGY STAR certified) automatically reduces transmitter power when the handset is close to the base, extending battery life. Stores 50 caller IDs and 50 phonebook contacts — see the name, number, time, and date before you pick up.

For example, SAS’s $44 Economy plan and MAP’s $49 Pay As You Go plan both add usage charges.

Setup fees

AnswerConnect lists a $49.99 setup fee on its Entry and Standard plans but not on Growth. A comparison that reports only the monthly price can therefore be misleading. (AnswerConnect)

Extra charges for useful features

Message taking may be included while appointment booking, custom calendaring, call recording, transcription, additional CRM connections or web chat cost more. Smith.ai, for example, separately prices appointment booking and recording or transcription on its human plans. (Smith.ai receptionist pricing)

“24/7” does not describe the same service everywhere

24/7 may mean live human answering, AI answering with human escalation, or an after-hours message-taking service. Smith.ai’s AI plan is AI-first with live escalation, while AnswerConnect and PATLive advertise live human coverage. Confirm who answers calls at night, whether transfers are available and whether the same script applies after hours. (Smith.ai AI Receptionist)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compliance language

If agents handle health, payment or other sensitive information, ask which systems and workflows are covered. Confirm whether you need a business associate agreement, whether calls are recorded, how transcripts are stored, and what information agents are permitted to collect.

Outdated comparison data

Answering-service prices change regularly. Smith.ai’s current human pricing is $300 for 30 calls, not older per-minute figures still found in some articles. PATLive’s current public Starter plan is $250 for 75 minutes, and Moneypenny’s current U.S. branding includes former VoiceNation operations. (Smith.ai pricing; PATLive pricing; Moneypenny plans)

FAQ

What is the cheapest answering service?

Specialty Answering Service has the lowest published base price in this comparison at $44 per month, but it also charges $1.54 per minute on its Economy plan. AnswerFirst has a lower $30 monthly base fee, with usage billed at $1.55–$1.90 per minute. The cheapest overall option depends on your call volume and average call length.

Are answering services billed per call or per minute?

Both models are common. Smith.ai’s human receptionist plans use per-call pricing, while Ruby, PATLive, AnswerConnect, MAP Communications, Moneypenny and Specialty Answering Service primarily use per-minute pricing. AnswerFirst uses one-second billing, which avoids rounding short calls up to the next minute.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Do answering services provide live human agents?

Several providers in this list advertise live human receptionists, including Ruby, PATLive, AnswerConnect, MAP Communications, Moneypenny, AnswerFirst, AnswerForce and HelloSells. Smith.ai offers both human and AI products. Confirm whether nights and weekends use humans, AI or escalation rather than assuming that every 24/7 plan works the same way.

What should I ask before choosing a provider?

Ask for the billing increment, overage rate, setup charges, cancellation terms, included features, transfer rules, appointment-booking limitations, recording and transcript policies, integration costs and after-hours staffing model. If sensitive information is involved, also ask about compliance documentation and any required agreement.

The Bottom Line

Ruby is the strongest choice for a polished live receptionist experience, while Smith.ai is better suited to lead qualification, intake and integrations. PATLive offers U.S.-based live answering with flexible scripts, AnswerConnect is designed for larger 24/7 volumes, and AnswerFirst is the clearest pay-as-you-go option.

For the lowest advertised entry price, compare Specialty Answering Service and MAP Communications carefully because both add usage charges. Home-service and legal businesses should request workflow-specific quotes from AnswerForce, while sales-focused teams should evaluate HelloSells based on the qualification and CRM features included in the quote.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before signing up, calculate your expected all-in monthly cost using actual call records. The plan with the lowest headline price may not be the one that costs the least after rounding, overage and feature charges.
