For U.S. buyers, these ten used-car candidates offer a safety-screened starting point, with April 2026 reference prices from about $4,700 to $13,200. They are not a universal ranking or guaranteed bargains: the right first car is one whose purchase price, insurance, financing, fuel, upkeep and repairs fit your budget—and whose exact year, trim and individual condition check out.
How to read this shortlist
The models below come from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and Consumer Reports’ vehicle recommendations for teens and young drivers, updated May 27, 2026. The list is a useful safety-screened pool for first-car shoppers, not a claim that every listed car is suitable for every new driver.
IIHS and Consumer Reports report rounded median retail prices obtained from Black Book in April 2026. Each price is for all trims of that model’s earliest applicable year; it is a dated reference point, not a current local asking price or a quote for a specific car. Model-year eligibility and, for some cars, a build-date cutoff matter. Check the vehicle’s certification label on the driver-side door jamb when a cutoff applies, and verify the exact car against the current IIHS/Consumer Reports list.
The list screens out vehicles under 2,750 pounds and those with excessive power relative to weight. Used vehicles also must earn a good IIHS driver-side small-overlap rating and meet Consumer Reports’ minimum braking, handling, and controls/display usability thresholds. The Best Choices category adds headlight and automatic emergency braking criteria. A model’s inclusion does not certify the safety, recall status, maintenance, or condition of the individual used car you find.

Ten candidates, organized by reference price
Prices are April 2026 median retail estimates, rounded to the nearest $100, as described above. The eight Good Choices below are followed by two Best Choices whose higher prices may suit shoppers with more room in the budget. The list is organized by reference price, not ranked by overall value.
| Model | Eligible model years and build-date note | List category | April 2026 reference price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nissan Sentra | 2015–2025 | Good Choice | $4,700 |
| Chevrolet Sonic | 2015–2019; built after February 2015 | Good Choice | $5,300 |
| Kia Soul | 2015–2025 | Good Choice | $5,300 |
| Hyundai Elantra | 2017–2025 | Good Choice | $6,100 |
| Mazda 3 hatchback or sedan | 2014–2018; built after October 2013 | Good Choice | $6,900 |

| Kia Forte | 2019–2024 | Good Choice | $8,900 |
| Mazda 3 hatchback | 2019–2025 | Best Choice | $13,200 |
| Mazda 3 sedan | 2020–2025 | Best Choice | $13,200 |
The Mazda 3 hatchback and sedan are separate body-style/model-year entries in the Best Choices range, not two different nameplates. The IIHS/Consumer Reports list also includes the Mazda CX-5 (2018–2025, built after March 2018) at a $13,100 reference price; it is an additional option, not one of the ten entries above. The lower price does not automatically make a car a better buy: actual mileage, trim, title, condition, fees, and local supply can change the comparison.

What should I look for when buying a first car?
Calculate the cost beyond the asking price
Build a monthly and annual budget that includes the out-the-door price, loan interest if you borrow, insurance, fuel or charging, tax and registration, routine maintenance, likely repairs, and depreciation. Compare the total price and loan terms—not just a monthly payment. A longer loan can make the payment look manageable while increasing the total amount paid.
AAA’s 2026 analysis estimated average ownership and operating costs for a new vehicle at $12,863 per year, or $1,071.92 per month, and weighted-average annual depreciation at $4,422. Those figures describe AAA’s new-vehicle analysis, not a budget forecast for a used first car. AAA says its methodology update means the 2026 estimate is not directly comparable with its 2025 figure. Its analysis also put the sales-weighted average new-vehicle MSRP at $39,376. See AAA’s 2026 ownership-cost analysis for its scope and methodology.

Get an insurance quote for the exact car
Ask your insurer for a quote using the actual model year and the driver’s details and location before agreeing to buy. Premiums vary by driver and place, so a low purchase price does not tell you whether a car will be affordable to insure. IIHS points shoppers to Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) insurance-loss information as one model-level guide; that information is not an individual premium quote. The institute’s advice on safety, insurance, and reliability is explained in its 2026 list announcement.
Judge the exact year, trim, and build date
Safety equipment, ratings, and eligibility can differ across model years and configurations. Confirm that the specific year and body style qualify, check any build-date rule, and review standard safety equipment for that exact trim. IIHS and Consumer Reports caution against large SUVs and pickups for inexperienced drivers; a smaller vehicle is not automatically the right choice, but size and handling deserve attention alongside crash protection.

Should my first car be new or used?
This shortlist is for used cars. A used car can reduce the amount you need to finance, but it shifts more of the decision onto condition, maintenance history, and the cost of potential repairs. A newer car may have a higher purchase price; compare the full ownership cost and insurance quote for the actual options rather than assuming either age category is cheaper for you.
Powertrain is another individual comparison, not a shortcut to a guaranteed savings. AAA’s 2026 analysis found hybrids were the most consistently lower-cost alternative to gas in the categories it analyzed. It found EV charging costs were lower, while depreciation, fees, and financing could outweigh fuel savings. Those are category-level findings, not a promise about a particular used vehicle, local electricity or fuel prices, or whether a buyer has convenient charging. AAA director of automotive engineering Greg Brannon said: “By looking at EVs, hybrids and traditional gas-powered vehicles within the same categories, consumers can better understand how total ownership costs vary by powertrain.”

How to inspect and buy a used first car
- Set a total budget. Include the purchase price, taxes and fees, interest, insurance, fuel or charging, maintenance, and repair capacity. Ask for the complete out-the-door price.
- Check the model and car history. Match the year, body style, trim, and any build-date cutoff to the safety list. Obtain a vehicle-history report, review service records, and check for open recalls through the NHTSA recall lookup.
- Get the insurance quote and loan terms. Price the exact car for its intended driver and location, then compare financing by total interest and total repayment as well as payment amount.
- Test-drive it in representative conditions. Check visibility, controls, braking, steering, comfort, and space for the people and belongings you expect to carry.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Have a trusted mechanic assess the car and provide an estimate for needed work before purchase.
- Review the paperwork and final price. For a dealer sale, read the Buyers Guide for major-system information and whether the car is sold “as is” or with a warranty. Confirm fees and terms before signing.
Consumer.gov’s car-buying guide covers budgeting, financing, and these used-car checks. Consumer Reports associate director of auto safety Emily A. Thomas said: “A teen’s first car is a major milestone. Whether you’re buying them a vehicle or deciding which family car they should begin driving, these lists help parents make those choices with confidence, and without compromising on safety,” as quoted in the IIHS May 27, 2026 announcement.
Choose the car that works after the test drive
Start with eligible candidates in a price range you can afford, then compare actual listings on out-the-door cost, insurance, exact-configuration safety equipment, service history, expected upkeep, practical fit, and inspection results. If a car only fits your budget before insurance, fees, or likely repairs, it is not an affordable first car for your circumstances.
