Both are described by Zcash’s educational materials as having a 21 million coin maximum and the same inflation schedule, but their halving intervals differ by block count. Those design facts do not establish which asset is a better investment: neither privacy features nor a supply cap predicts future returns.
How private are Bitcoin and Zcash transactions?
Bitcoin: public transaction history
Bitcoin transactions are recorded on a public ledger. That transparency lets observers inspect transaction activity and potentially link it across addresses. Public visibility does not, by itself, reveal every user’s legal identity; identification can depend on whether addresses become associated with people through other information. Bitcoin.org describes the Bitcoin network as highly transparent.
Zcash: transparent or shielded transactions
Zcash supports transparent transactions as well as shielded ones. A transaction made entirely between shielded addresses can conceal the addresses, amount, and optional memo from public blockchain observers, while nodes can still verify it. A transaction between transparent addresses exposes sender, receiver, and amount. Transactions involving transparent endpoints may expose information about those endpoints even when shielded components are involved. Zcash’s address documentation explains the distinctions, and the May 7, 2026 Zcash Protocol Specification describes the design as bridging Bitcoin’s transparent payment scheme with a shielded scheme secured by zero-knowledge proofs.
Wallet choices affect what happens in practice
“Zcash is private” is too broad without specifying the transaction type and wallet. Wallets can shield transactions by default, let users choose between private and transparent transactions, or support only transparent transactions. Check the wallet’s current behavior and supported address types before sending funds; Zcash’s usage guidance recommends verifying wallet support.

Shielding does not erase every trace
Zcash’s shielded transactions do not guarantee anonymity against every observer or protect information exposed at a device or service. Transaction fees remain publicly visible, the protocol does not obscure users’ IP addresses, and movements between transparent and shielded addresses—or other metadata leaks—can create correlations. See Zcash’s privacy recommendations for these operational limits.
Do Zcash and Bitcoin have the same supply limit?
Yes. Zcash’s Learn Zcash materials state that ZEC and BTC each have a maximum supply of 21 million coins and the same inflation schedule. The halving intervals are expressed in different block counts:

| Asset | Maximum supply | Block subsidy halving interval | Current subsidy figure in the cited source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin (BTC) | 21 million coins, according to Zcash’s Learn Zcash page | Every 210,000 blocks, according to Bitcoin.org | 3.125 BTC per block following the April 20, 2024 halving, according to Bitcoin.org’s page accessed October 3, 2026; the subsidy changes at future halvings |
| Zcash (ZEC) | 21 million coins, according to Zcash’s Learn Zcash page | Every 840,000 blocks, according to the Zcash Documentation glossary, version 6.12.2 | Not stated in the cited Zcash materials |
The shared supply ceiling and inflation schedule describe issuance policy, not equal demand, market value, or investment risk. The block intervals also are not a promise that halvings occur on the same calendar date.

No conclusion about which asset will outperform follows from these protocol features. The cited materials explain privacy and issuance but do not establish comparative expected returns or provide a basis for calling either asset undervalued or superior. Bitcoin.org warns that bitcoin is a high-risk asset and that people should not store money they cannot afford to lose in it; that is a warning about risk, not a comparative forecast for BTC and ZEC. For a personal-finance decision, assess the factors that matter to your circumstances rather than treating privacy or a supply cap as a buy signal:
- Transaction visibility: decide whether public auditability or optional shielded transactions better fits your needs.
- Wallet capability: confirm that the wallet supports the transaction type you intend to use, and understand what it exposes.
- Market risk: consider volatility and uncertainty about each asset’s adoption; the available sources do not quantify which has greater prospective returns.
- Custody and security: assess whether you can securely manage the relevant wallet and protect access to your funds.
- Local rules and access: verify current exchange availability and tax treatment for your jurisdiction. The cited materials do not establish those details for every location.
These are distinct considerations: choosing a privacy feature does not settle the investment question, and matching maximum supplies do not make the assets interchangeable.
