First, identify the right Xiaomi factory
Viral videos and headlines often combine statistics from separate facilities. Wuhan is Xiaomi’s Smart Home Appliance Factory. It should not be confused with the company’s Beijing smartphone plant or its Beijing electric-vehicle factory.

That distinction matters: Beijing’s smartphone capacity cannot be used to validate Wuhan’s appliance output.

Xiaomi says the Wuhan plant officially began operating in October 2025 and was designed for a peak annual capacity of 7 million air conditioners. The company presents it as an integrated large-appliance operation covering design, research and development, manufacturing, and verification (Xiaomi).

In Xiaomi’s 2025 annual-report materials, the company also says one air conditioner can be produced every 6.5 seconds. That is a cycle-time or line-speed statement, not automatically the factory’s total daily output.
What “dark factory” means
“Dark factory” and “lights-out factory” describe production areas designed to run with little routine human presence. Machines do not need ordinary workplace lighting, and automated systems can continue operating for long periods without workers standing at each station.
The phrase does not prove that an entire site is always empty. A genuinely operating factory still may need people for:
- Preventive maintenance, calibration, tooling changes, and repairs
- Controls, software, robotics, and reliability engineering
- Safety inspections, cleaning, and facility operations
- Quality-system management and regulatory compliance
- Material exceptions, fault recovery, and emergency response
For Wuhan, the defensible description is “highly automated” or “lights-out-capable” for selected processes. Available disclosures do not establish a completely human-free building.

How an appliance can move through the plant
The factory is not one humanoid robot doing every task. It is a coordinated network of specialized equipment, transport systems, sensors, and manufacturing software. The likely material flow is:
- Receiving and storage: Components arrive and are recorded in inventory systems.
- Automated allocation: Materials are directed to the production area and model-specific workstation that needs them.
- Subassembly: Machines and fixtures combine components into larger modules.
- Internal transfer: Conveyors, transfer equipment, or automated vehicles move assemblies between operations.
- Inspection: Machine vision checks defined components and assemblies while process data is recorded.
- Final assembly and verification: The completed air conditioner is tested, identified, and routed onward.
- Packaging and dispatch: Automated logistics move finished units toward storage and shipment.
Some details of this sequence are an explanation of how an integrated appliance line typically works; Xiaomi’s public disclosures specifically document the transfer system, inspection coverage, process monitoring, and manufacturing-platform integration.

The magnetic-levitation transfer line
Xiaomi says Wuhan uses a magnetic-levitation transfer line that operates at five times the speed of traditional mechanical transfer lines and can make precise stops between processes (2025 annual-report disclosure). Precise positioning is important because an assembly must arrive at the correct tool, camera, or test station without a person nudging it into place.
Secondary coverage describes an overhead automated rail linking production and logistics areas. The often-repeated 4.2-kilometre length comes from Bernama and should be treated as a secondary-reported figure, not as an independently confirmed Xiaomi specification.

The key innovation is the material-flow system: fast internal transport coordinated with production scheduling, inventory records, inspection data, and exception handling. Faster equipment alone would not create a lights-out operation if parts still had to be carried manually between stations.
What the AI actually does
Xiaomi reports AI inspection across eight scenarios and 25 inspection items. It also says critical components receive 100% AI inspection rather than traditional sampling, while 17 key process parameters—including thermal-grease thickness and screw torque—are monitored in real time (Xiaomi’s annual report).
Those claims describe industrial machine vision and process-control systems, not a general-purpose chatbot running the factory. In practical terms, the software can:
- Detect visual defects and assembly anomalies
- Verify that specified components and fasteners are present and correctly installed
- Compare measurements with process limits
- Associate inspection results with a unit’s production record
- Flag abnormal conditions for intervention
Xiaomi also reports a finished-product first-pass yield above 99.8%. That is a company-reported performance claim, not an independently audited guarantee that every unit is defect-free under every operating condition.

The manufacturing software layer
Xiaomi describes its Hyper Intelligent Manufacturing Platform as the digital backbone connecting equipment, production lines, systems, and data. It links production execution, scheduling, material movement, quality inspection, traceability, inventory, and decision support (Xiaomi’s annual report).
Calling it a “manufacturing operating system” is more accurate than calling it a single AI brain. The plant’s autonomy comes from many coordinated systems: controllers, sensors, vision models, databases, logistics software, and people who handle exceptions when those systems encounter something outside their programmed conditions.
Where the 90,000 figure breaks down
Secondary reporting has described the Wuhan operation as handling roughly 90,000 appliance “sets” per day (Gizchina). The wording matters: “sets” may describe planned or peak handling capacity, a particular product stream, or movement through part of the operation rather than audited finished-air-conditioner output.
Xiaomi’s official materials reviewed here emphasize 7 million air conditioners a year and a 6.5-second cycle, not a confirmed 90,000-unit daily output. The numbers illustrate why capacity terms must be separated:

Therefore, 90,000 cannot be treated as the same sustained air-conditioner output represented by 7 million a year. It could refer to a peak or combined handling measure, multiple product streams, a different definition of “set,” or an imprecise description. The available sources do not establish which explanation is correct.

A 6.5-second figure may apply to a particular line, model family, stage of assembly, or peak operating condition. A factory-wide annual capacity also reflects the number of lines, planned downtime, changeovers, maintenance, product mix, and utilization.

That is why a line can have a fast takt time while the site’s published annual capacity is much lower than a simple seconds-per-unit multiplication would suggest. Cycle time, daily throughput, annual design capacity, and actual delivered output are different metrics.
What automation changes—and what it does not
Consistency and traceability
Automated handling can reduce repetitive manual movement and make process records more consistent. Vision inspection and parameter histories also make it easier to trace where a defect or deviation occurred.
Flexibility costs money
Automation works best when products, components, and processes are standardized. A major product change may require new tooling, inspection models, robot programs, material-routing logic, line balancing, and validation. Xiaomi’s earlier smart-factory disclosures emphasize modular and reusable production equipment, indicating that flexibility is a design objective rather than an automatic feature (2024 annual-report filing).
New dependencies
Removing routine manual tasks increases dependence on sensors, networks, control software, spare parts, and specialized technicians. A camera-calibration error, transfer-line jam, incorrect material feed, network outage, or AI-model drift can stop a tightly integrated line faster than a problem at one manual workstation.
Labor is transformed, not erased
Fewer routine assembly positions can mean greater demand for controls engineers, robotics technicians, maintenance planners, vision specialists, reliability engineers, data staff, and production supervisors. A dark production zone may contain little visible labor while the wider operation still depends on substantial technical and support work.
Verdict: highly automated, not proven human-free
Xiaomi’s Wuhan site is a real smart-home-appliance factory focused on air conditioners, with a reported 7-million-unit annual design capacity, a claimed 6.5-second cycle, automated material movement, AI inspection, and integrated manufacturing software. The “90,000 units” number is secondary-reported and does not match the official annual-capacity figure if interpreted as sustained daily air-conditioner output.
