Xiaomi is not spending $7 billion to immediately abandon Qualcomm. The figure refers to a planned minimum investment of RMB50 billion—about $6.9 billion when reported—over at least 10 years. Xiaomi is building serious in-house chip capability, including its flagship XRING O1 processor, while a May 2025 agreement says premium Xiaomi phones will continue using Qualcomm Snapdragon platforms for multiple generations.
What the $7 billion figure actually means
The headline comes from Xiaomi’s commitment to invest at least RMB50 billion over at least a decade in chip development. The commonly quoted dollar value of roughly $6.9 billion is an approximate conversion, not a separate payment or a one-time product budget. Quartz reported the commitment, while Xiaomi described the program in its official XRING O1 announcement.
This distinction matters for investors and consumers. The money is a long-term minimum investment, and it covers a broader semiconductor program rather than only one smartphone processor. Xiaomi’s chip work spans potential smartphone system-on-chips, imaging, artificial intelligence, connectivity, wearable and vehicle components, and smart-device silicon.
What Xiaomi had already spent
By the XRING O1 launch in May 2025, Xiaomi said it had invested RMB13.5 billion in chip research and development and had built a team of more than 2,500 engineers. That is evidence of a substantial organization, but it does not mean the full RMB50 billion has already been spent or that it represents savings from replacing Qualcomm purchases.

What XRING O1 is
Xiaomi unveiled XRING O1 in China on May 22, 2025, calling it the company’s first flagship processor designed in-house. Xiaomi’s stated specifications place it firmly in the flagship mobile-chip category.
- Second-generation 3nm manufacturing technology, according to Xiaomi
- Approximately 19 billion transistors
- 10-core CPU
- 16-core Arm Immortalis-G925 GPU
- Xiaomi’s fourth-generation image signal processor
- Six-core neural processing unit rated by Xiaomi at 44 TOPS
The chip debuted in the Xiaomi 15S Pro smartphone and Xiaomi Pad 7 Ultra tablet. The announcement confirms those launch products, but it does not establish a current U.S. retail price or broad global availability.
“In-house” does not mean Xiaomi manufactures everything
In this context, in-house means Xiaomi controls important parts of the processor’s design, integration, software tuning and roadmap. It does not mean Xiaomi owns and operates a leading-edge fabrication plant.
The parts of the supply chain
- Design: Xiaomi engineers developed the SoC and its system integration.
- CPU and GPU technology: XRING O1 uses Arm technology. Arm’s account of the chip confirms that relationship.
- Manufacturing: Advanced chips require an external foundry. Reports have identified TSMC, but that attribution is not the same as a direct Xiaomi or TSMC manufacturing disclosure.
- Packaging, testing and equipment: These stages also rely on specialized outside suppliers and a global semiconductor ecosystem.
XRING O1 therefore demonstrates Xiaomi’s design capability, not complete domestic semiconductor self-sufficiency. A 3nm-class design still depends on licensed intellectual property, electronic-design software, advanced manufacturing capacity and international supply chains.
Why “ditch Qualcomm” is misleading
Two days before Xiaomi announced XRING O1, Qualcomm said it had signed a new multi-year agreement with Xiaomi. Under the announcement, Xiaomi’s premium smartphones would continue using Snapdragon 8-series platforms across multiple product generations, with expected shipment volume increasing each year in China and globally. The companies said their relationship had already lasted 15 years.
The agreement also covers automotive, smart-home, wearable, tablet and other connected products. Read the Qualcomm announcement for the stated scope.

The public evidence supports a portfolio strategy rather than a clean break:
- XRING for selected China-focused flagship phones and tablets
- Snapdragon for premium products that need established global modem, carrier and software support
- MediaTek and other suppliers for additional performance and price tiers
- Xiaomi-designed chips for specialized functions across its device ecosystem
This is an interpretation of the launches and agreements, not a published Xiaomi promise that every product will follow exactly those lines. A Xiaomi phone could also combine a Xiaomi-designed application processor with Qualcomm connectivity or radio-frequency components.
Why Xiaomi wants its own silicon
Supply-chain resilience
More control over chip design can reduce exposure to supplier pricing, allocation decisions, export controls and geopolitical disruption. It does not remove those risks, because Xiaomi would still need advanced manufacturing, tools, intellectual property and connectivity components.
Product differentiation
A custom processor can be tuned for Xiaomi’s cameras, battery management, artificial-intelligence features, HyperOS software, tablets and connected devices. The potential advantage is tighter coordination between hardware and software rather than a guaranteed performance lead.
Bargaining power and economics
At sufficient volume, an internal design could improve negotiating leverage with Qualcomm and MediaTek or eventually lower component costs. Those are possible long-term outcomes, not verified near-term savings. The investment must first earn back years of engineering, validation and manufacturing expense.
Technology-company ambitions
Xiaomi has framed chip development as a difficult but necessary step in becoming a deeper technology company rather than only a consumer-electronics brand. Apple’s custom-silicon model shows why control of processors can support differentiation, although Xiaomi remains less vertically integrated.

How XRING O1 should be judged
Its specifications make XRING O1 technically ambitious and broadly comparable in category with flagship processors from Qualcomm, MediaTek, Apple and Samsung. They do not prove that it is faster, more efficient or more reliable than those alternatives.
Evidence that would matter
- Independent benchmarks that disclose device software, thermal conditions and test methodology
- Battery-life and performance-per-watt testing over sustained workloads
- Camera, gaming and artificial-intelligence results in shipping software
- Driver quality, Android update support and third-party application compatibility
- Real-world modem performance and carrier certification outside China
Official transistor, core and TOPS counts are useful specifications, but a TOPS rating is not a universal measure of end-user AI performance. Nor does a single launch device establish that Xiaomi can deliver a competitive processor every year.
Why Qualcomm can remain important
A smartphone application processor is only one part of a mobile platform. Qualcomm’s advantages can include cellular modem technology, radio-frequency components, carrier certification, global network compatibility, Android software support, graphics and AI ecosystems, patent licensing, supply planning and long experience integrating with phone makers.
That is why Xiaomi can design XRING O1 and still buy Qualcomm technology elsewhere in the device. The continuing agreement also means Qualcomm remains commercially relevant even if Xiaomi gradually reduces its use of Snapdragon in selected models.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat Xiaomi tried before
This is not Xiaomi’s first semiconductor effort. The company launched the Surge S1 smartphone processor in 2017. That effort was widely viewed as unsuccessful or insufficiently competitive, after which Xiaomi concentrated more on specialized chips before returning to flagship application-processor development. PhoneArena’s background account describes that earlier history.
XRING O1 is therefore a restart and escalation of the strategy, not proof that Xiaomi has suddenly become an end-to-end chip manufacturer.

What would make the strategy successful?
- Sustained releases: Xiaomi must produce credible successors annually, not just one impressive launch chip.
- Connectivity competence: It must support global cellular standards and carrier certification, whether through its own modem work or continued outside components.
- Software maturity: Drivers, camera libraries, AI frameworks and Android updates must remain consistent across XRING and Snapdragon devices.
- Manufacturing access: Xiaomi needs advanced-node capacity at commercially viable volumes despite foundry and export-control risks.
- Global deployment: Broader international use would show that XRING is more than a China-specific experiment, but regulatory, carrier and patent barriers may limit expansion.
- Economics: Chip differentiation, bargaining leverage or eventual savings must justify a decade-scale investment.
- Product breadth: Using related silicon in phones, tablets, cars, wearables and smart-home products could spread development costs across more units.
What this means for readers and investors
The Xiaomi 15S Pro and Xiaomi Pad 7 Ultra are the clearest consumer examples of the strategy, but the launch announcement does not provide a current global purchase page or U.S. price. Imported models may have incompatible carrier bands, different software and payment services, limited warranty coverage and weaker local support.
For buyers who prioritize global carrier compatibility and established Android support, Qualcomm-powered Xiaomi products remain relevant because Xiaomi’s premium Snapdragon relationship is continuing. Choosing such a device does not make XRING irrelevant; it reflects Xiaomi’s likely coexistence model.
