Short answer: Xiaomi did not officially report exactly 16,000 SU7 deliveries for September 2024. On October 1, it said September deliveries exceeded 10,000 for a fourth straight month. Contemporary third-party reporting estimated roughly 15,000–16,000 vehicles. Xiaomi then targeted production and delivery of more than 20,000 vehicles in October—and later confirmed that October deliveries did exceed 20,000.
What Xiaomi actually reported for September
Xiaomi’s official September announcement, issued on October 1, 2024, used a threshold rather than an exact total: more than 10,000 SU7 deliveries. That was the company’s fourth consecutive month above 10,000, following June, July and August. The announcement is summarized by CnEVPost.
Reports based on third-party Chinese auto-market data placed September at approximately 15,000–16,000 vehicles. Cinco Días reported that range, but the methodology and metric need to be identified before treating it as an exact sales total. Xiaomi itself did not publish an official September figure of 16,000.
Why the terminology matters
- Deliveries: Vehicles handed to customers, the metric Xiaomi used in its official disclosures.
- Registrations: Vehicles recorded in government or industry registration data; these may underpin third-party estimates.
- Sales: A loose media term that can mean retail sales, wholesale shipments or registrations.
- Production: Vehicles manufactured, which are not necessarily delivered in the same month.
- Orders: Customer commitments that have not yet become completed deliveries.
Accordingly, “16,000 sales” is too definite without attribution. The most defensible description is that official deliveries topped 10,000 while external estimates put September volume near 16,000.

The rapid SU7 delivery ramp
The SU7, Xiaomi’s first production vehicle, launched on March 28, 2024. Xiaomi’s third-quarter presentation shows the following progression, using exact figures where disclosed and thresholds where the company reported only a minimum:

The presentation’s threshold wording means the months are not all comparable to the same degree of precision. Still, the sequence shows a fast production-and-delivery ramp from 7,058 vehicles in April to repeated five-figure monthly output within the first half-year of sales. What the October target meant
Xiaomi said it would continue increasing factory capacity and aimed to produce and deliver more than 20,000 vehicles in October. That was an operational production-and-delivery objective, not necessarily a forecast of retail sales. The wording and Lei Jun’s contemporaneous comments are reported by CnEVPost.
By September 30, Xiaomi said it had opened 127 smart-EV sales centers in 38 mainland Chinese cities. That network, together with the Beijing factory ramp, gave the company more capacity to turn reservations into completed handovers. Did Xiaomi hit 20,000 in October?
Yes. Xiaomi subsequently reported that monthly SU7-series deliveries exceeded 20,000 in October 2024. Its official announcement confirmed the threshold but did not give a more precise total. A Gasgoo database listed 20,726, but that is a third-party figure and should not be substituted for Xiaomi’s official disclosure without accepting the provider’s methodology. - It later said it would challenge a 120,000-vehicle annual target.
- In November, it raised the target to 130,000.
- Its annual results recorded 136,854 SU7-series deliveries for 2024, exceeding the revised target.

For a consumer-electronics company entering China’s established EV industry, exceeding 10,000 monthly deliveries only months after launch was evidence of early product demand and improving manufacturing execution. It also tested whether Xiaomi could scale retail, service and delivery infrastructure alongside factory output. The cited figures concern Xiaomi’s China launch phase; they do not establish global availability or long-term market share.

Several factors plausibly contributed to the increase:
- Production ramp-up after the March launch.
- Expansion of the Beijing manufacturing operation.
- Growth of the sales and service network.
- Interest in a technology-focused sedan from a company with a large consumer-electronics ecosystem.
- Improved conversion of reservations into completed deliveries.
These are reasonable operational interpretations, not proof that any single factor caused the monthly increase. Early volume also leaves open questions about sustained demand, waiting-list conversion, capacity utilization and the cost of supporting a larger vehicle fleet.
Volume was strong, but the EV business was not yet profitable
Xiaomi reported 39,790 SU7 deliveries in the third quarter of 2024, smart-EV revenue of RMB9.5 billion and a smart-EV segment gross margin of 17.1%. For the full year, smart-EV and other new initiatives generated RMB32.8 billion of revenue and an 18.5% gross margin, but the segment posted an adjusted net loss of RMB6.2 billion. These figures come from Xiaomi’s Q3 announcement and annual results.
That combination is the central business qualification: Xiaomi demonstrated a successful early manufacturing and market-entry ramp, but delivery growth alone did not show that the EV operation had reached profitability. Competition from Tesla, BYD, Huawei-backed brands, Nio, Xpeng, Zeekr and other Chinese manufacturers, along with the cost of factories, stores and after-sales support, remained material risks.
