Yes—X says it may share public X data and your interactions with Grok on X with xAI to train and fine-tune generative AI models. The setting is opt-out-based: turn it off in X’s privacy settings to exclude your data from model creation and fine-tuning under that control. It is not a universal block on every use of data, so also check the separate personalization setting and avoid sharing confidential information. The practice and opt-out were publicly reported in July 2024; X’s current guidance, checked August 18, 2026, describes the settings and their limits.
What X says it may use
X’s Grok Help Center says it may share “public X data” with xAI to train and fine-tune Grok and other generative AI models. That means more than the text of public posts:
- Public posts and associated metadata, including engagement and reposts.
- Public Spaces and public profile information, such as a bio and display name.
- Interactions with Grok on X, including prompts, inputs, results, voice inputs, transcriptions and translations.
X’s policy allows this use unless a user disables the relevant setting. That does not establish that every public post has already been included in a training run.
How to turn off X-based Grok model training
- In X, open Settings.
- Select Privacy & Safety, then Data sharing and personalization.
- Open Grok & Third-party Collaborators.
- Under Data Sharing, turn off or deselect “Allow your public data as well as your interactions, inputs, and results with Grok and xAI to be used for training and fine-tuning.”
If the menus differ in your app or on the web, search X settings for “Grok,” “Data sharing” or “Grok & Third-party Collaborators.” X may change menu names and placement.

What the training switch does—and does not do
According to X, disabling the control prevents your public data and X-based Grok interactions from being used for xAI model creation and fine-tuning under this setting. You can continue using Grok on X. X also describes limits that matter when deciding what the switch protects:
- It is not a ban on every AI-related use. X says the setting does not prevent a deployed Grok-powered feature from learning from normal use, such as interactions with recommendations.
- Feedback is an exception. If you submit feedback on a Grok conversation, such as a thumbs-up or thumbs-down, X says that conversation and related data may still be used for training and fine-tuning, even after you opt out.
- It does not necessarily stop live search. Grok may retrieve or summarize public X posts to answer a current query. That real-time use is separate from training a model; seeing a public post in an answer does not by itself show that the training opt-out failed.
- X makes no promise here to undo prior training. Its help page does not say opting out removes information already incorporated into a model.
Turn off Grok personalization separately
Model training and personalization have separate controls. To limit the use of personal data to tailor your Grok experience, go to Privacy & Safety → Data sharing and personalization → Grok & Third-party Collaborators → Grok Personalization and turn off “Allow X to personalize your experience with Grok.” X says this prevents personal data from being used to personalize your Grok experience. If you want both protections, check that both the training and personalization controls are off.

When making your account private is the better choice
X says protecting your posts prevents them from being used to train Grok and xAI’s underlying AI models or surfaced in responses to user queries. To do that, open Settings and privacy → Privacy & Safety → Audience and tagging and check Protect your posts.
This changes visibility across your account, not just AI training: your posts are no longer publicly visible, which can reduce reach and discoverability. Existing followers may still see them. X does not say that making an account private retracts posts that were public earlier or removes them from previously created training data.

Delete Grok conversation history
To delete your X-based Grok history, go to Privacy & Safety → Data sharing and personalization → Grok → Delete Conversation History, then confirm. X says deleted conversations are removed from its systems within 30 days, unless they must be retained for security or legal reasons.
Conversation deletion is separate from opting out of future training. X does not state that deleting history reverses training already completed or removes information from model weights.

If you use Grok outside X
Settings for Grok on X do not automatically control the separate Grok app or Grok.com. xAI lists these controls in its Consumer FAQs:

xAI also says unauthenticated Grok users in some regions outside the EU and UK may not have an opt-out where legally permitted. That caveat concerns unauthenticated use, not a general rule for X accounts.

Keep sensitive information out of Grok
X advises users not to share personal, sensitive or confidential information with Grok. Treat that as a practical safeguard, not a claim that every prompt becomes public. Avoid entering passwords, API keys, medical records, private legal documents, confidential business plans, unpublished research or proprietary source code. Voice inputs and their transcriptions or translations are also included in X’s description of interaction data that may be used.
An opt-out is not a confidentiality agreement. If material requires contractual protection, use a service whose terms and controls meet that requirement, or do not submit it. For maximum caution, do not submit feedback on a conversation you do not want considered for training.
