Re:

X raised Premium Plus prices by nearly 40%—then raised them again

The 2024 X Premium Plus increase was nearly 40%, but today’s U.S. web price is $40 monthly or $395 annually. Here’s what changed and who should pay.

X’s December 21, 2024 price increase made Premium Plus about 37.5% more expensive per month for U.S. web subscribers, rising from $16 to $22. The annual plan rose from $168 to $229, an increase of about 36.3%. That was not the final price, however: X’s current help center lists Premium+ at $40 per month or $395 per year on the U.S. web, before any applicable taxes or payment-method fees.

What changed in December 2024?

X increased the price of its top individual subscription tier, then called Premium Plus, in several markets. The Basic tier was not part of that specific increase. In the United States, the change took effect for new subscribers on December 21, 2024.

U.S. web billing Before Dec. 21, 2024 December 2024 price Increase
Monthly $16 $22 37.5%
Annual $168 $229 About 36.3%

The monthly figure explains the “almost 40 percent” description more closely than the annual figure. Prices and percentage changes differed by country; the U.S. comparison does not describe every market. The Verge reported the original rollout and regional changes.

When did existing subscribers pay the higher rate?

New subscribers

Anyone subscribing from December 21, 2024, saw the higher price immediately.

Existing monthly subscribers

The old rate continued through the transition period. X applied the new rate to the first billing cycle beginning after January 20, 2025, so the exact charge date depended on the subscriber’s renewal date.

Existing annual subscribers

Annual customers generally remained at the old price until their next annual renewal. The announcement date alone therefore did not determine when an individual account was charged.

The current Premium+ price is much higher

X later announced another adjustment effective February 18, 2025. As of October 2026, its official U.S. web pricing page lists:

Premium+: $40 per month or $395 per year.

Comparison Monthly Annual
December 2024 price $22 $229
Current U.S. web price listed by X $40 $395
Later increase from December 2024 About 81.8% About 72.5%

The annual option averages about $32.92 per month and saves $85 versus paying $40 monthly for 12 months, but it requires paying $395 upfront. X says the final amount can vary with country, currency, taxes, payment method and whether the purchase is made on the web, iOS or Android. What did X say the higher price included?

When announcing the December increase, X pointed to a bundle rather than verification alone:

  • A completely ad-free X experience, as X described it.
  • Higher usage limits for Grok models.
  • Priority support.
  • Additional features, including the Radar trend-monitoring tool.
  • A closer relationship between subscriptions and creator payouts, with X saying its revenue-sharing approach would emphasize content quality and engagement rather than advertising views alone.

In its later February 2025 announcement, X highlighted expanded Grok 3 access, ad-free browsing and creator support through revenue sharing. These are product claims from X, not guarantees that every subscriber receives a particular payout or that every feature will remain unchanged.

How Premium+ compares with lower tiers

X’s current help page lists the following starting U.S. web prices:

Tier Starting monthly price Starting annual price Typical reason to choose it
Basic $3 $32 Basic posting and customization benefits
Premium $8 $84 Blue checkmark, longer posts and broader Premium features
Premium+ $40 $395 Ad-free browsing, highest-level AI access and top-tier support/features

Feature availability can change. X says Premium features are subject to change; review its current Premium documentation before subscribing.

Who is most likely to get value from Premium+?

Heavy X users

Premium+ is easiest to justify for people who spend hours in the feed and place a high value on removing ads. “Ad-free” refers to X’s description of the subscribed experience; it should not be assumed to remove every recommendation, commercial message or advertising encountered outside X.

Creators and publishers

Frequent posters may value longer-form publishing, visibility-related tools, higher limits and access to monetization programs. A subscription does not guarantee eligibility or income. Earnings depend on separate program rules, activity and engagement.

Frequent Grok users

Higher limits matter when Grok is part of a regular workflow. Occasional users may not use enough AI capacity to recover the price difference.

Casual users and checkmark seekers

Someone who reads posts occasionally or mainly wants a checkmark is unlikely to need the $40 tier. Basic or Premium may cover that use at a much lower cost.

Questions to answer before subscribing

  1. Compare the checkout price on your platform. App-store billing, regional currency, taxes and payment fees can produce a different total from the U.S. web figure.
  2. Measure your actual ad and Grok usage. If you rarely notice ads or rarely use Grok, the premium bundle has less practical value.
  3. Choose monthly or annual deliberately. Annual billing lowers the effective monthly cost but locks in a large upfront payment and is harder to justify if your use of X may change.
  4. Check alternatives. Meta Verified focuses more on identity protection and support; YouTube Premium targets ad-free video and music; Discord Nitro is built around communities and streaming; and Reddit Premium offers ad-free Reddit browsing. None replaces X’s particular posting, Grok or X-based monetization tools.

Billing, upgrades and downgrades

  • Web, iOS and Android subscriptions are managed through their respective purchase platforms.
  • Upgrades and downgrades follow different platform rules. On the web, remaining value is generally applied toward future payments when upgrading; on iOS, an upgrade through the original platform can trigger a prorated refund for the unused period.
  • Downgrades generally begin at the end of the current billing cycle rather than immediately.
  • Subscriptions are generally non-refundable unless applicable law requires otherwise. X says suspension or loss of account access does not normally create a refund entitlement.
  • Premium Business and Premium Organizations can include Premium+ access for affiliated accounts, so their economics differ from an individual plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is X Premium+ still $22 per month?

No. $22 was the U.S. web monthly price introduced on December 21, 2024. X’s current U.S. web listing is $40 monthly or $395 annually; regional and platform prices may differ.

Did every country get the same 40% increase?

No. X changed prices in multiple markets, but local prices and percentages varied with currency, taxes and platform billing.

Does paying for Premium+ guarantee creator earnings?

No. Monetization requires meeting separate eligibility and program rules, and earnings depend on qualifying activity and engagement.

The Bottom Line

The December 2024 increase was genuinely close to 40% for U.S. monthly billing, but it is now historical. The more important figure for a prospective subscriber is X’s current listed price of $40 per month or $395 per year on the U.S. web. Premium+ makes the strongest financial case for heavy X users, frequent Grok users and creators who actively use its tools; it is a poor value if you mainly want a checkmark or occasional ad-free browsing.
