X Nearly Doubled Premium+ Prices After Grok 3 Launch—From $22 to $40

X raised U.S. Premium+ pricing from $22 to $40 per month after Grok 3 launched. That is an 81.8% increase—not a literal doubling—and the right choice depends on whether you want X, Grok, or both.

X did not technically double the price of Premium+, but it came close. On February 18, 2025, X raised the U.S. web price from $22 to $40 per month—an $18 increase, or 81.8%. The change followed xAI’s Grok 3 announcement and was explicitly linked by X to expanded Grok access, although Premium+ also bundled X-specific benefits such as mostly ad-free use.

For consumers, the key question is whether they want X plus Grok or primarily Grok itself. The latter group may find standalone SuperGrok, listed by xAI at $30 per month, a better fit.

What changed?

X increased Premium+ pricing for U.S. web subscribers from $22 to $40 per month on February 18, 2025. The annual price became $395. The previous annual price was reported at $299 by contemporaneous coverage, rather than being confirmed in X’s current pricing documentation.

Plan detail Before the change After the change
U.S. monthly Premium+ $22 $40
Monthly increase — $18
Percentage increase — 81.8%
U.S. annual Premium+ $299, as reported at the time $395
New subscribers — New price from February 18, 2025

The arithmetic is straightforward: ($40 - $22) ÷ $22 × 100 = 81.8%. A true doubling would have produced a $44 monthly price. “Nearly doubled” is accurate; “doubled” is not technically precise. X’s price-adjustment notice and contemporaneous reporting document the change.

When did the price increase happen?

  • February 17–18, 2025: xAI announced Grok 3, with the date varying by time zone and publication timestamp.
  • February 18, 2025: X announced the Premium+ price adjustment. New subscribers paid the new rate immediately.
  • March 22, 2025: X’s transition terms for existing subscribers ended. Subscribers whose next billing cycle began before that date retained the old rate for that cycle; the $40 price applied to the first billing cycle after the specified transition condition.

That timing supports a close connection between Grok 3 and the price change. It does not prove that Grok 3 alone caused an 81.8% increase. X’s own explanation cited several reasons.

Why did X raise Premium+ pricing?

In its official notice, X said the increase reflected:

  1. Expanded access to Grok 3.
  2. A completely ad-free experience across most of X, although sponsored content may still appear under X’s qualifications.
  3. Support for the creator program and revenue-sharing model.

These are X’s stated reasons, not an independently verified financial breakdown. The company did not publish evidence showing that Grok 3 required a price increase of exactly 81.8%.

What Premium+ provided for Grok 3

At the Grok 3 launch, xAI said Grok 3 was available to both X Premium and Premium+ users. Premium+ was distinguished by higher usage limits and immediate or early access to advanced capabilities, including Think and DeepSearch. That means it would be inaccurate to describe Grok 3 as exclusively locked behind Premium+.

It is also safer to describe Premium+ as offering higher limits and advanced access—not unlimited Grok use. Usage caps, model availability, and feature rules can change, and launch-era access should not automatically be treated as the current product specification. The original launch details are in xAI’s Grok 3 announcement.

Premium+ was more than an AI subscription

The value calculation depends on whether you use X itself. Premium+ bundled Grok with X features, including:

  • All lower-tier X Premium features.
  • Higher Grok limits than lower X tiers.
  • Ad-free use across most areas of X, with possible sponsored content.
  • The largest reply-prioritization boost.
  • Radar Search and Articles in X’s current feature description.

Those benefits matter to an active X user but have little value to someone who simply wants an AI assistant. X’s current Premium documentation also warns that prices and availability can vary by country, taxes, payment method, and whether the subscription is purchased on the web or through a mobile app.

Premium+ versus SuperGrok

The most important comparison is between a bundle and a standalone AI subscription:

Subscription Price signal Best suited to
X Premium+ $40/month or $395/year on the U.S. web price listed by X People who want Grok together with X’s mostly ad-free experience and platform features
SuperGrok $30/month on xAI’s pricing page when observed People primarily interested in Grok rather than X’s subscription benefits
X Premium $8/month or $84/year on the U.S. web price listed by X People who want lower-cost X enhancements and lighter Grok use

xAI’s SuperGrok pricing page lists higher rate limits, access to frontier models, image and video generation, and real-time web and X search. Those offerings can change, and Premium+ and SuperGrok should not be assumed to have identical limits or model access.

At the listed prices, someone paying only for Grok could potentially save $10 per month with SuperGrok. Someone who also values X’s ad reduction, reply prioritization, publishing features, and integrated experience may view the additional cost as payment for the bundle—not simply for chatbot access.

Who should consider Premium+?

Premium+ may make sense if you:

  • Use X heavily and want a mostly ad-free experience.
  • Want Grok integrated directly into X.
  • Value the highest X reply-prioritization boost, Articles, or Radar Search.
  • Prefer one combined X-and-AI subscription instead of separate services.

Premium+ is probably poor value if you:

  • Want Grok but rarely use X.
  • Will not use the higher Grok limits.
  • Primarily need an assistant for coding, writing, research, or productivity rather than social-platform features.
  • Are comparing AI capabilities alone and do not value the X bundle.

The bottom line on the “doubling” claim

X’s Premium+ price rose from $22 to $40 per month after the Grok 3 release. The increase was substantial—81.8%—but not a literal doubling. X tied the adjustment to expanded Grok 3 access while also pointing to ad-free X and creator support.

Choose Premium+ if you want the combined X-and-Grok package. Choose SuperGrok if Grok is the main reason you are paying. Choose X Premium or neither if your use is occasional and the additional limits and mostly ad-free experience do not justify the higher recurring cost.
