The “price” was part of a prank built around an ordinary stone, and the retailer later joined in with staged content. Here’s how the joke unfolded, what Anthropologie actually did, and how to tell the viral prop apart from real stone decor.
Was Anthropologie really selling a $1,000 rock?
No. The viral rock was an ordinary stone presented as expensive home decor in a prank video. The $150 purchase claim in the original clip and the later $1,000 price tag on an apparent store display were parts of the joke—not evidence that Anthropologie listed or sold a rock at either price. The Daily Dot and The Philadelphia Inquirer describe the gag and its follow-up.
How did the “Anthro rock” joke start?
The original prank
In September 2025, creator Phoebe Adams posted a video presenting an ordinary rock to her boyfriend, Dan, as if she had bought it from Anthropologie for $150. The Daily Dot dates the post to September 14, 2025; the Inquirer reports on the couple and the clip’s spread. The premise worked because an unusual, costly-looking home accessory seemed just plausible enough to sell the joke.
The pretend $1,000 display
Follow-up clips escalated the bit with an apparent Anthropologie rock display and a $1,000 price. That display was staged as part of the joke. Neither the original claim nor the follow-up establishes an actual Anthropologie product listing, so the price should not be read as a retail price.

Why did Anthropologie join in?
Anthropologie responded to the viral moment on social media and worked with Adams and Dan on follow-up content at a store. The Inquirer describes the collaboration as a paid partnership. The brand also documented its response in a Shorty Awards submission.
Anthropologie CEO Tricia Smith described the difficulty of reacting to an unpredictable trend: “No one can expect or anticipate it, so how do you respond when something like the rock comes up?” (Vogue Business.)

What did the campaign achieve?
In its Shorty Awards submission, Anthropologie reported 550 million impressions across owned, earned, and press, and 15,000 earned mentions across social and media. How is the viral rock different from real stone decor?
Stone sculptures and objects are a real home-decor category, but that does not make them the viral Anthropologie rock. Livingetc’s October 1, 2025 roundup presents actual stone decor alternatives. The distinction is straightforward:
| What you’re looking at | Status | Purpose | Price evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| The viral rock | Ordinary stone used as a prank prop | A meme and staged joke | $150 and $1,000 were pretend amounts in the joke, not verified Anthropologie retail prices |
| Stone decor | Home objects offered by sellers as decor | Home styling | Check the seller’s current product listing; Livingetc’s roundup is an alternative-products guide, not an Anthropologie listing |
If you like the look, search for “decorative stone sculpture” and check the specific seller, materials, dimensions, and current price before buying. The viral rock itself is not an established Anthropologie product.
