On October 17, 2024, Worldcoin introduced World Network, usually shortened to World, and unveiled a redesigned Orb. The change broadened the project’s pitch from a crypto-token initiative to an ecosystem built around proving that someone is a unique human online. It did not rename the WLD cryptocurrency: WLD remains a distinct part of the system.
What did Worldcoin become?
World’s 2024 announcement described the broader project as World Network, or World for short. It brought together several products and organizations that are related but not interchangeable:
- World: The broader identity, app, blockchain and proof-of-personhood ecosystem.
- Worldcoin (WLD): The cryptocurrency token. The brand change did not turn WLD into a token called “World.” Its distribution and availability depend on eligibility and local restrictions.
- World ID: A credential intended to let a person prove they are human and unique within the system.
- World App: The user-facing app for World ID, a wallet, credentials and other features.
- World Chain: The blockchain launched as part of the expanded ecosystem.
- Tools for Humanity: The for-profit technology company building and operating much of the system.
- World Foundation: The organization responsible for stewardship and token-related ecosystem functions.
The announcement framed this as “Worldcoin becomes World,” but the important distinction is that the project’s umbrella identity changed while the token retained the WLD name. World’s announcement and its founders’ letter describe the network and its components.
Why drop “coin” from the name?
World said “Worldcoin” no longer captured its wider mission. The project wanted to focus on human uniqueness online, credentials, a blockchain and third-party applications—not only cryptocurrency distribution. Its longer-term case is that proof of personhood could help services distinguish people from bots and AI agents, and help people participate in economic opportunities as AI becomes more capable. That economic vision is an aspiration, not a guaranteed benefit for users.

There is also a commercial and reputational interpretation: “Worldcoin” had become closely associated with crypto speculation and the offer of tokens in connection with biometric verification. Emphasizing identity infrastructure and an AI-era internet gave the project a broader story. That is an interpretation of the repositioning, not a motive the company acknowledged as such. Reuters’ event coverage and TechCrunch’s report described the launch and its context.
What the Orb does—and what changed in 2024
The Orb is an in-person biometric enrollment device, not a cryptocurrency ATM. A person presents their eyes for iris-related verification; if the system determines they are unique, they can receive a World ID. The credential is intended to prove humanity and uniqueness without requiring every participating service to see a person’s legal name. It is not a government identity document, and pseudonymous verification does not mean anonymous use in every app or situation.
World presented the new Orb as smaller in complexity and easier to deploy at retail sites, kiosks, flagship locations and through on-demand verification. The hardware announcement said it used an NVIDIA Jetson chipset, had 30% fewer parts than the prior version and offered nearly five times the AI performance. Those are company-reported specifications, not independent test results. TechCrunch reported World’s claim that the new device operated three times faster; Reuters reported 5G connectivity. These performance and connectivity details should be understood as claims and event reporting from 2024, not current independent benchmarks. World’s technical announcement, TechCrunch and Reuters covered the device.
The new Orb also had a removable external SD card, which World said was intended to improve auditability. That feature does not by itself settle how biometric information is processed, retained or deleted. Anyone considering enrollment should consult World’s current privacy notice and terms rather than infer data handling from a hardware feature or a broad privacy claim.

How World ID differs from a digital government ID
A conventional digital identity often proves a legal identity or links activity to a government record or company account. World ID’s intended distinction is narrower: it is designed to establish that a user is human and unique within World’s system, and to support proof of some attributes without disclosing all underlying information.
World ID Credentials, announced in 2024, were designed to use information from NFC-enabled passports. World said users could prove details such as age or nationality without revealing all passport data. This route may let some people use credentials without Orb enrollment, but it is not full Orb verification and does not replace a passport, driver’s license, citizenship document or universal age-check system.
Privacy in practice depends on the credential, app, wallet, data-processing design, consent flow, the service accepting the proof and applicable local rules. A World ID may be useful only where a service accepts it; it does not automatically establish that a user meets a service’s legal or financial identity requirements.
What else was announced alongside the Orb?
World ID 3.0
Beyond passport-based credentials, World announced Deep Face, which it presented as a tool to counter impersonation and deepfakes, and additional privacy technology including AMPC. These were features and aims announced by the project; their existence does not amount to independent validation of their effectiveness.

World App 3.0
World App 3.0 was presented as a “super app” combining a wallet, World ID, credentials and mini apps, with payments and other functions where available. The strategy gives users reasons to return after enrollment or token activity, while giving third-party services a potential route to integrate World ID.
World Chain
World said World Chain mainnet went live on October 17, 2024. It was designed to integrate World ID and prioritize activity by verified humans. The launch announcement named Optimism, Alchemy, Uniswap, Safe, Dune and Etherscan among supporting providers and applications. World also claimed that roughly 15 million World ID holders and World App users would migrate; that was a company figure at launch, not a current user count. See the announcement.
Does WLD still exist, and can everyone receive it?
Yes. WLD remains the token associated with Worldcoin and the wider World ecosystem. Verification does not guarantee a token distribution: eligibility depends on age, geography, legal restrictions and program rules. World’s materials identify the United States and other restricted territories as unavailable for relevant distribution contexts, and later U.S. rollout coverage noted geographic limits including New York State. Check current local eligibility rather than assuming a person who verifies can claim WLD. World’s founders’ letter describes restrictions; Axios’ 2025 U.S. rollout report provides additional context.
WLD is a crypto asset, not a guaranteed payment or low-risk savings product. A July 24, 2026 report said World raised $52.5 million through a WLD sale to strategic investors subject to a 12-month lockup. That indicates continued token-market activity; it does not show that WLD is a safe investment or that World has achieved mass adoption. TechCrunch reported the transaction.

What are the privacy and regulatory concerns?
The central trade-off is that a reusable proof-of-personhood system may help limit bots and duplicate accounts, but enrollment involves highly sensitive biometric verification. Critics and regulators have raised concerns about consent, data handling, security, token incentives and whether people in poorer or less-regulated markets face undue pressure to participate. Biometric data creates a particular risk: unlike a password, a person cannot simply replace their iris if sensitive information is compromised.
World’s stated privacy approach should be distinguished from independently established outcomes. The 2024 launch coverage reported temporary bans in Spain and Portugal and investigations or examinations in Argentina and Britain; TechCrunch also described scrutiny or suspended activity involving Kenya and countries in the European Union. Those reports describe actions and scrutiny at that time, not necessarily the current legal status in those places. Rules and availability vary by jurisdiction and can change. Reuters and TechCrunch covered the concerns.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is World an OpenAI product?
No. Sam Altman is a co-founder of World, but World is separate from OpenAI. Tools for Humanity leads much of the technology effort, and Alex Blania is its CEO and co-founder. TechCrunch reported that Blania described the two organizations as having separate missions while saying Altman remains involved in World decisions. The connection does not mean World ID is an OpenAI or ChatGPT identity feature. TechCrunch’s launch report discusses the relationship.
What happened after the 2024 rebrand?
World announced a U.S. expansion on May 1, 2025, initially naming Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville and San Francisco. Axios reported partner discussions and activity involving Match Group and Razer, as well as a World Card concept intended to work with Visa for spending crypto assets from World App. Availability of locations, partnerships and payment features can change; the 2025 announcement is not a guarantee that a service is available everywhere today. Axios covered the rollout.

As of August 18, 2026, the 2024 event is historical context rather than the latest World update. The original announcement itself warns that it may be outdated. The reported July 2026 locked WLD sale shows continuing crypto activity, but a financing transaction alone says little about user adoption, financial sustainability or the value of the token.
What to check before signing up
World App onboarding, an Orb visit and WLD eligibility are separate considerations. Before enrolling, weigh the following:
- Biometric comfort: Decide whether iris-related enrollment is acceptable to you, and read the current privacy notice and terms before participating.
- Local access and rules: Confirm an Orb is available where you live and that enrollment and token distribution are permitted there.
- Actual utility: Identify a service you would use that accepts World ID. A credential has limited practical value if the apps you need do not accept it.
- Credential scope: Check whether a passport credential meets your need; it is not the same as full Orb verification.
- Wallet risk: If you use World App for digital assets, account and crypto-wallet security risks still apply.
- Token expectations: Do not treat possible WLD as guaranteed income. Eligibility and token value are uncertain, and the token can lose value.
- Third-party permissions: Review what each integrated app asks you to share; acceptance of World ID does not make every app’s data practices identical.
For someone seeking legally recognized identity, government-issued digital ID remains a different category. Businesses needing conventional KYC may need a provider built for that purpose. People who only want stronger account security can consider passkeys or multifactor authentication without biometric enrollment. Those options solve different problems and are not interchangeable with proof of personhood.
