Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, announced on April 9, 2024 that it had acquired Beeper, the unified messaging app. TechCrunch reported a purchase price of $125 million, citing sources close to the transaction; Automattic’s announcement confirmed the acquisition but did not publicly state that figure. The deal placed Beeper alongside Automattic’s earlier Texts.com acquisition in a broader bet on interoperable, privacy-oriented messaging.

Automattic’s announcement is available at Automattic’s acquisition post. The reported valuation comes from TechCrunch’s contemporaneous report, not a publicly filed Automattic transaction statement. No public source in the deal announcement establishes retention packages, earn-outs, financing terms, revenue, profitability or a return on the investment.
What Beeper actually does
Beeper places conversations from multiple messaging networks in one interface instead of requiring a separate app for each service. Its apps are available on iPhone and iPad, Android, macOS, Windows, Linux and ChromeOS. Depending on the network, users may get direct and group messages, images, video, reactions, replies, stickers, disappearing messages, broadcast channels or threads.
Beeper says it supports more than 10 chat networks, but support is not uniform. Available features, authentication requirements and whether a connection runs on the device or in the cloud differ by network. The current chat-support matrix is the practical reference; “one inbox” does not mean feature parity with every official app.

Why Automattic bought it
Automattic’s stated rationale
Automattic described the acquisition as a way to reduce fragmentation among closed messaging networks and make communication more open and accessible. It also pointed to privacy-oriented and open-source work, and said Beeper would be combined with Texts.com. The company had already entered messaging through its 2023 Texts.com purchase, so Beeper was a second major messaging acquisition rather than an isolated experiment. Automattic’s explanation appears in its announcement.
What the sequence suggests
The acquisition sequence supports a broader strategic interpretation: Automattic was assembling a dedicated messaging business alongside its publishing, commerce and creator products. Beeper supplied a consumer-facing product, a technically experienced team and a recognizable founder, while Texts.com offered overlapping technology and users. Owning both gave Automattic the option to consolidate engineering and product development instead of maintaining two competing unified-inbox apps.
A subscription-supported, privacy-focused service could also provide a different position from advertising-funded messaging platforms. That is an inference from the companies’ product direction, not a disclosed financial forecast or proof that the investment has paid off.

How Texts.com fits the transaction
Texts.com and Beeper addressed the same basic frustration: people use several networks with separate apps, interfaces and account systems. Automattic said the teams would work together, and Beeper described its team as merging with Texts.com’s team.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The integration became more concrete after the acquisition. Beeper’s transition documentation says Texts users moved into Beeper, while Texts.com stopped accepting new registrations. Existing users retained access for relevant account and billing needs during the transition. Texts therefore should not be treated as a normal new-customer alternative. Details are in Beeper’s legacy-user guidance.
Why the iMessage story drew attention
Before the acquisition, Beeper became unusually prominent for trying to make iMessage available to Android users. TechCrunch reported that Beeper’s iMessage-related technology had been referenced by the U.S. Department of Justice in its antitrust case against Apple. That history made Beeper more than an ordinary unified-inbox startup.

It does not establish that Automattic bought Beeper as a DOJ project, that the deal was a regulatory remedy or that it changed Apple’s legal obligations. iMessage was important context, but Automattic’s public rationale concerned a wider multi-network messaging strategy.
What changed after Automattic took over
Product consolidation and redesign
Automattic and Beeper integrated much of the Beeper and Texts.com work. In February 2025, Beeper released redesigned desktop and iOS apps, according to TechCrunch.
On-device connections and paid plans
In July 2025, Beeper relaunched with on-device connections and premium upgrades. Its stated goal was to reduce reliance on Beeper’s servers for supported networks while funding the product through subscriptions rather than advertising. The company’s explanation is in “The New Beeper”.

As of Beeper’s official help pages viewed on August 18, 2026, the plans were:
| Plan | Limits and features | Price shown on Aug. 18, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Beeper Free | Up to five connected accounts, generally one account per network; core messaging | Free |
| Beeper Plus | Up to three accounts per network and 10 total; scheduled sending, reminders, incognito mode, voice-note transcription, custom icons and other tools | $9.99 monthly or $99.99 annually |
| Beeper Plus Plus | Unlimited accounts and priority support | $49.99 monthly or $499.99 annually |
Annual prices represent two free months compared with paying monthly. Subscription prices and limits can change; the figures above come from Beeper’s plan FAQ and account-limit documentation. Beeper says the free core experience is intended to remain available and that it does not display ads.

| On-device connection | Cloud connection | |
|---|---|---|
| Where connection runs | On the device where it is configured | Through Beeper’s servers |
| Data architecture | Beeper says messages, attachments and credentials for supported integrations do not transit or remain on its servers | Beeper says cloud chat history uses zero-access encryption, but messages, contacts and credentials can be stored in its infrastructure |
| Synchronization | Device-specific; does not automatically provide the same cross-device sync | Designed for convenient access across devices |
| Availability | Only for supported networks and configurations | Some networks remain cloud-only |
Beeper’s documentation identifies Google Messages, Google Chat, LINE, Discord and Slack among networks that remain cloud-only. On-device connections can preserve end-to-end encryption where the underlying network supports it, but privacy also depends on the network, device security, credentials and verification state. See Beeper’s connection guide and its privacy policy.

The architecture creates a real choice rather than a universal best setting: on-device connections can limit server exposure but may reduce synchronization, while cloud connections are more convenient and may be required for a particular network. Beeper also warns that unverified sessions can display encrypted messages or fail to decrypt them; its verification guidance explains the recovery process.
What the $125 million bet still has to prove
A unified inbox is technically dependent on companies that Automattic does not control. Apple, Meta, Google, Discord, Slack and other networks can change APIs, authentication systems or policies, restrict unofficial access, or remove capabilities. Maintaining bridges across many services is an ongoing engineering and support expense.
The commercial model has a second tension. A free tier helps adoption, but infrastructure, security and customer support cost money. Plus and Plus Plus subscriptions offer a way to fund the service without advertising, yet the evidence available here does not show subscriber numbers, revenue, margins or whether the acquisition has generated a financial return. Texts.com integration may eliminate duplicated work, but migrations can also create account, billing and feature friction.
For users, the decision is therefore practical: Beeper can reduce app switching and provide one searchable inbox, but it cannot guarantee official-app parity or permanent access to every network. For investors and industry observers, the unresolved question is whether a privacy-oriented subscription product can support the cost and fragility of cross-platform messaging at the scale implied by a reported $125 million purchase.
Who Beeper is for now
- Good fit: people who monitor several supported networks, need desktop and mobile access, want one search interface, or manage personal and work accounts.
- Check first: whether each network has the features and connection type you need in Beeper’s support matrix.
- Consider Free: if five total connected accounts and generally one account per network are sufficient.
- Consider Plus: if multiple accounts and productivity features justify $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year at the prices shown on August 18, 2026.
- Consider Plus Plus: only when unlimited accounts and priority support justify $49.99 per month or $499.99 per year.
- Choose official apps instead: if you want each network’s first-party support and the fewest intermediary-integration risks. Relevant official services include Signal, WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord and Slack, though they require separate apps.
Bottom line
Automattic’s April 9, 2024 acquisition was a bet on more than Beeper’s headline-making iMessage experiment. It brought Automattic a unified-inbox product, a messaging team led by Eric Migicovsky and a path to combine Beeper with Texts.com. The $125 million figure remains a TechCrunch-reported price rather than an amount Automattic officially disclosed in its announcement. Since then, Beeper has moved toward on-device connections, a free tier and paid subscriptions. Whether that model ultimately justifies the reported price is still unproven, but the strategic goal is clear: build a consumer messaging layer that makes fragmented networks easier to use without relying on advertising.
