Cloud-security company Wiz announced its emergence from stealth on December 9, 2020, alongside a $100 million Series A. The round was led by Index Ventures, Sequoia Capital, Insight Partners and Cyberstarts. Wiz said it would use the financing to scale its product, customer base and team.
What Wiz announced
The company’s December 9, 2020 announcement paired its launch with a $100 million Series A financing. The round’s four named lead investors were Index Ventures, Sequoia Capital, Insight Partners and Cyberstarts. Wiz’s announcement and the financing release described the capital as a way to accelerate growth.
Who founded Wiz
Wiz was founded by Assaf Rappaport, Ami Luttwak, Yinon Costica and Roy Reznik. The four had previously founded Adallom, acquired by Microsoft in 2015, and then led Microsoft’s Cloud Security Group. That experience informed their view of the challenges facing security teams as organizations moved workloads into cloud environments.
What problem Wiz said it was trying to solve
At launch, Wiz argued that cloud-security products were too complex and fragmented, leaving teams to manage multiple tools and sift through too many alerts. Its proposed alternative was a holistic platform offering visibility across cloud environments, with risks presented in context so teams could concentrate on the issues that mattered most.

Rappaport, Wiz’s CEO and co-founder, described the founders’ motivation this way: “When our founding team was leading the Microsoft Cloud Security Group, we saw firsthand how security teams struggled with the complexity of existing approaches to securing the cloud.” The launch announcement said the founders set out to “build a cloud security solution that delivers total visibility and lets security teams focus on the real risks.”
How the launch pitch differed from fragmented tools
Wiz’s distinction was one of approach: rather than asking customers to manage a collection of separate security products, it presented a unified view of cloud risk. The comparison below summarizes the company’s launch positioning, not independently verified results.
Rank #2
- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
| Area | Fragmented approach described by Wiz | Wiz’s stated approach |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Information spread across multiple products | Holistic visibility across cloud environments |
| Alerts | High alert volume that can make prioritization difficult | Focus on real risks rather than treating every alert alike |
| Risk context | Separate tools can leave teams piecing findings together | An integrated view intended to help teams see risks in context |
| Deployment and time to value | Not quantified in the launch sources | Not quantified in the launch sources |
The launch materials explain Wiz’s product thesis, but do not establish independent performance comparisons, customer adoption figures, revenue, or a measured reduction in alert volume. Those claims should not be inferred from the company’s positioning.
What the $100 million was intended to fund
Wiz said the Series A would support scaling its product, customer base and team in 2021, with the stated aim of meeting demand for an elegant cloud-security platform. The announcement does not break down the $100 million by expense category, nor does it provide a separate figure for hiring, product development or sales.

Why the financing matters to the story
The raise gave Wiz substantial capital at the moment it publicly introduced its company and product thesis. But the funding announcement is evidence of financing and investor backing—not, by itself, proof that the platform delivered better security outcomes than existing tools. The case Wiz made was that consolidated cloud visibility could reduce complexity and help teams prioritize risk; evaluating that claim requires evidence beyond the launch announcement.
