Choose self-hosted WordPress if your website will become a long-term business asset requiring extensive content, custom functionality, complex integrations, or advanced ecommerce.
There is one essential clarification: “WordPress” can mean WordPress.com, a hosted service, or WordPress.org software installed on hosting that you arrange yourself. WordPress.com is much closer to Wix in convenience. Self-hosted WordPress offers substantially more control—but also more responsibility.

For most first-time local-business owners, I would choose Wix. For a serious publication, affiliate site, agency, developer-led project, or complex store, I would choose self-hosted WordPress.
What are Wix and WordPress?
Wix is a hosted website builder and business platform. Its templates, visual editor, hosting, security infrastructure, marketing tools, and support are managed through one account. Wix’s plans page lists free and paid options, including tiers aimed at websites and ecommerce.

WordPress.org is free, open-source content-management software. It is not hosting. You choose a host, install WordPress, and typically manage themes, plugins, updates, backups, security, performance, and email configuration. The official requirements page explains the hosting environment WordPress expects.
WordPress.com is a hosted WordPress service operated by Automattic. It provides managed infrastructure and support, with capabilities depending on the plan. It should not be scored as though it were identical to self-hosted WordPress.

Ease of use: Wix wins at launch
Wix removes several early decisions. You do not need to compare hosting packages, install WordPress, configure a theme, or assemble a basic stack of plugins before building pages. Its visual editor and templates make it practical for a nontechnical owner to create a polished five- to 20-page service website.
Self-hosted WordPress has a steeper starting curve. You must select hosting, configure the domain, choose a theme, decide which plugins are necessary, and establish a process for updates, backups, and security. A managed host or page builder can simplify this, but may add cost, vendor dependence, or another layer of complexity.
That does not mean Wix is always easier forever. An experienced WordPress user can manage complex sites efficiently, while Wix’s constraints may become frustrating when a project needs unusual workflows. Separate ease of launch from ease of ownership at scale.

Design and customization
Wix is strong when your priority is visual control without writing code. Its template library and editor help nontechnical users produce a coherent design quickly. Wix also offers developer-oriented tools such as Velo and Wix Studio, so it is inaccurate to describe Wix as suitable only for beginners.
WordPress offers a wider range of themes, block-based approaches, page builders, custom post types, taxonomies, APIs, integrations, and editable theme files. On self-hosted WordPress, a developer can control much more of the site’s code and hosting environment.
The trade-off is operational. “Infinitely customizable” does not mean free or effortless. Advanced WordPress customization can require paid tools, development work, staging, testing, and ongoing maintenance. Themes, plugins, builders, and custom code can also conflict.

Blogging, publishing, and content-heavy websites
For a serious blog or publication, I generally recommend WordPress. Its ecosystem is better suited to large content libraries, multiple authors, editorial workflows, custom post types, complex archives, taxonomies, newsletters, analytics, CRM connections, and specialist publishing tools.
Wix is perfectly reasonable for a business blog, occasional company updates, or a personal blog with moderate publishing needs. It becomes less attractive when the content system itself is the core of the business or when you expect complicated architecture and integrations.

SEO: neither platform guarantees rankings
The old claim that Wix is automatically bad for SEO is too broad and outdated. Wix provides built-in tools for common tasks such as editing titles and descriptions, managing site settings, and handling technical basics. Its integrated approach can be an advantage when you do not want to configure a large technical stack. Wix’s own comparison page describes its built-in SEO and hosting features; treat those as product claims rather than independent performance evidence.
WordPress generally offers a higher technical ceiling. You can select specialist SEO plugins, customize templates and structured data, control hosting and caching, and address unusual technical requirements with code. That flexibility does not automatically create better rankings—and poor plugins, weak content, bad architecture, or slow hosting can undermine a WordPress site.

For either platform, rankings depend more on search intent, useful content, internal linking, accessibility, performance, site architecture, and credible links than on the platform name.
Ecommerce: simple store versus complex operation
When Wix is the better store choice
Wix is attractive for a relatively simple catalog or a service business adding online payments. Hosting, checkout, products, marketing, and business tools are packaged together, reducing setup and maintenance.
Check the details before buying. Payment providers, recurring payments, and features vary by country and plan. Wix specifically notes that payment availability and recurring-payment support vary by region and provider.

When WooCommerce and WordPress are better
WooCommerce is the main WordPress ecommerce route. It can be extended with payment gateways, shipping tools, subscriptions, wholesale pricing, inventory systems, marketplaces, tax services, and custom integrations. That makes it a stronger candidate when ecommerce is an operational system rather than a small add-on.

Wix is often more predictable because hosting and many basic services are bundled. Costs can still include a premium plan, domain renewal, business email, paid apps, professional design, and payment-processing charges. Wix says displayed prices vary by location, currency, taxes, and billing period; annual plans are paid upfront. Check the current price for your country and renewal terms rather than relying on a headline monthly figure.
Self-hosted WordPress software is free, but the website is not necessarily cheap. Budget for:
- Domain registration and hosting
- Premium themes or plugins
- Backups, security, and performance services
- Business email and possibly a CDN
- Developer, agency, or maintenance time
- Ecommerce extensions and payment costs
A low-cost WordPress plan can become poor value if it produces slow performance, weak support, unreliable backups, or security problems. Conversely, a higher Wix plan may be good value if it replaces several separate tools and reduces your maintenance burden.

Security, updates, and support
Wix manages more of the hosting infrastructure centrally, so the owner has fewer server-level tasks. That lowers the chance of neglecting routine maintenance, although no platform is risk-free.
With self-hosted WordPress, security depends on the host, update discipline, plugin and theme quality, passwords, access controls, backups, firewall and malware protection, and custom code. Managed WordPress hosting can automate some updates, backups, SSL, and security work, but it does not remove every responsibility.
Support is another important distinction. Wix has a centralized help and customer-care model. WordPress.com provides managed support according to its plan. Self-hosted WordPress has no single support desk for the entire stack: your host, theme vendor, plugin vendor, freelancer, agency, and community may each handle different problems.
Ownership and portability
Self-hosted WordPress separates the software from the hosting company. You can generally move the site’s files and database to another host, although themes, plugins, custom code, email, and server settings may require reconfiguration.
Wix content may be exportable or migratable in some situations, but its design system, apps, layouts, and proprietary features do not necessarily transfer one-for-one. Moving away may mean rebuilding the design and functionality rather than copying ordinary website files. A content migration tool is not proof that every functional site can be moved cleanly in the reverse direction.
If you are moving an existing site
Do not migrate solely because another platform looks better in a feature table. A site that already ranks or generates leads should be evaluated carefully.
- Map every important URL and create redirects.
- Preserve titles, descriptions, canonical settings, structured data, and internal links.
- Move and test images, downloads, forms, analytics, and conversion tracking.
- For stores, verify products, customers, orders, payments, shipping, tax, subscriptions, and inventory.
- Check domain DNS, email delivery, SSL, performance, and third-party integrations.
- Expect a design rebuild when moving between Wix and self-hosted WordPress.
My recommendation by website type
- Local service business: Wix for a straightforward site where speed and low maintenance matter.
- Freelancer or consultant: Wix for a simple portfolio; WordPress if you need extensive customization or plan to publish regularly.
- Personal portfolio: Wix for convenience, WordPress for deeper design and content control.
- Serious blog, publication, or affiliate site: Self-hosted WordPress for content architecture, integrations, monetization control, and portability.
- Small online store: Wix if simplicity is the priority; WooCommerce if flexibility and integrations matter more.
- Complex ecommerce: Usually WordPress/WooCommerce or a dedicated commerce platform, subject to validating operational requirements.
- Someone who hates maintenance: Wix or WordPress.com—not unmanaged self-hosted WordPress.
- Developer, agency, or technically capable owner: Self-hosted WordPress for control over code, hosting, themes, plugins, databases, and integrations.
- Business planning significant growth: WordPress is usually the safer long-term choice when growth means more content, integrations, customization, or platform independence.
Final verdict
Wix is the better default for a straightforward website where convenience, fast launch, bundled hosting, and centralized support are the priorities. Self-hosted WordPress is my recommendation when the site is expected to become a flexible, content-rich, heavily integrated, or highly customized business asset.
If you mean WordPress.com rather than WordPress.org, the decision is much closer: both are managed platforms, and the deciding factors become editor preference, plan features, ecosystem, cost, and the amount of control you expect to need.
