On January 5, 2012, Lithium Technologies announced a $53.4 million fourth funding round, led by New Enterprise Associates, to expand software that let large brands host customer communities, support forums and social engagement programs. Lithium’s central bet was that customers could become more than an audience: they could answer one another’s questions, supply product feedback and influence other buyers.
This was a historical enterprise-software thesis, not a current funding announcement. In 2012, “social” meant branded online communities, user-generated content, Facebook engagement, social customer relationship management and advocacy—not today’s creator, short-video or generative-AI ecosystem.
What Lithium announced in January 2012
The financing was Lithium’s fourth round. New Enterprise Associates led it, SAP Ventures joined as a new investor, and existing backers Benchmark Capital, DAG Ventures, Emergence Capital, Greenspring Associates, Shasta Ventures and Tenaya Capital also participated, according to contemporary coverage.
TechCrunch reported that Lithium had previously raised approximately $39 million. Adding the new round produces about $92.4 million in disclosed funding, although that total is an estimate because the earlier figure was rounded. Then-CEO Rob Tarkoff had joined roughly 100 days earlier after a digital-enterprise role at Adobe. Lithium said the capital would support product development, sales and marketing, international expansion, hiring and acquisitions. The company had about 200 employees and planned to roughly double that workforce; the source describes this as an intended hiring plan, not proof that the expansion occurred.

What Lithium actually sold
Lithium was an enterprise-software provider, not a consumer social network. Its customers bought branded environments where their own customers could interact with one another and with the company.
- White-label communities and forums: Brand-hosted discussion spaces rather than a profile inside a general-purpose network.
- Peer support: Customers could ask questions and answer other customers, leaving searchable solutions for later visitors.
- Ideas and feedback: Brands could collect feature requests, complaints and suggestions in a visible stream.
- Reputation and gamification: Ranking, badges or similar mechanisms were used to identify active contributors and encourage participation.
- Analytics: Reporting was intended to show what customers discussed and valued.
- Social CRM and engagement tools: Community activity could be connected to support and marketing workflows.
In practical terms, Lithium sat between customer service, product feedback and marketing. It was not simply a tool for scheduling posts or buying social ads.
What “social will change marketing” meant
The slogan described a set of mechanisms in Lithium’s positioning and the period’s coverage, not an independently demonstrated result.

From broadcast to participation
Instead of treating customers as passive recipients of campaigns, a brand could invite them to contribute answers, ideas and experiences. The resulting content could help other customers without requiring a new marketing message for every question.
From paid persuasion to peer proof
Recommendations and product discussions from existing users could carry a different kind of credibility from advertising. A reputation score could help a company recognize frequent or knowledgeable contributors, although a platform ranking is not the same thing as independently validated purchasing influence.
From periodic surveys to continuous feedback
Repeated questions, complaints and feature requests could reveal patterns between formal research projects. Product and support teams could use those patterns to prioritize work.

Experienced customers might deflect repetitive support requests while becoming public advocates. That outcome was a business hypothesis, not a guaranteed saving: it depended on enough useful participation and effective moderation.
From rented audiences to owned communities
A company-controlled community gave a brand more direct control over its customer relationships than a page on Facebook or another third-party network. It still required the company to attract members, maintain trust and operate the service.

Why the funding mattered strategically
A $53.4 million round signaled that investors saw enterprise social software as a potentially large category. It gave Lithium room to defend and extend its core community product while competing in adjacent markets.
- Increase U.S. and international sales and marketing.
- Continue core product development.
- Hire aggressively, with a stated goal of approximately doubling headcount from 200 employees.
- Make acquisitions and broaden the product portfolio.
- Improve the company’s Facebook offering.
TechCrunch described the strategy as a push for leadership in social-brand software: contemporary coverage. “Leadership” here is a description of the period’s positioning, not a verified market-share finding.
The Facebook bet
Lithium had launched a Facebook product in May 2011. Its initial emphasis was identifying and promoting highly active users. Contemporary reporting suggested the company might develop Facebook page applications or other tools to improve engagement, but those possibilities were not confirmed commitments.
That distinction mattered. Facebook could provide reach, but its APIs, ranking systems, advertising rules and user behavior were outside Lithium’s control. A Facebook strategy could complement an owned community, yet it could not substitute for the work of building a durable customer base on the brand’s own platform.

What could go wrong with the model
A community needs a critical mass
A branded forum has little value without enough customers asking useful questions, supplying answers and returning regularly. Recruiting that initial membership can be expensive.
Activity is not representativeness
The most prolific participants may not reflect the broader customer base. A ranking system can surface helpful contributors, but it can also reward volume, familiarity with the rules or performative activity.
Moderation is part of the product
Spam, abuse, inaccurate advice, confidential information and unanswered complaints require trained community managers, escalation rules and legal oversight. A public failure can damage trust more visibly than a private support exchange.
Attribution is difficult
Posts, logins and “influence” are easy to count. Showing that a conversation caused a sale, reduced contact-center cost, improved retention or changed a product decision is harder and requires integration with support, CRM, product and financial data.
Third-party platforms can change the economics
Facebook integrations depended on policies and technical interfaces Lithium did not control. A change in access, ranking or advertising could weaken an otherwise sound plan.

Privacy and governance matter
Customer discussions and behavioral data can contain personal information and commercially sensitive details. Connecting community activity to marketing systems requires clear permissions, retention policies and access controls.
What the 2012 thesis got right—and what it did not prove
Lithium correctly identified that customer conversations could have several jobs at once: answering support questions, exposing product problems, helping prospective buyers and identifying enthusiastic users. Its distinctive proposition was structured social customer experience rather than social publishing alone.
But the financing did not establish that communities reduced support costs, increased sales or created durable advocacy. The available contemporary reports provide no quantified customer ROI, retention results, later financial performance or definitive evidence that the Facebook opportunity became a lasting distribution channel. Those outcomes should not be inferred from the size of the round or the company’s hiring plan.
Bottom line for readers looking back
Lithium’s January 2012 funding was a bet that the most valuable social activity for brands would be organized customer conversation. The company aimed to turn users into helpers, feedback sources and advocates through branded communities, reputation systems, analytics and support integrations. That was more specific—and more operationally demanding—than the broad claim that every part of marketing would simply become “social.”
