It was a third-party digital-code offer, not Microsoft Store pricing. The promotion was described as lifetime access for one device, with a 30-day redemption deadline, but its current price, stock and exact license rights must be confirmed on the live checkout page before you pay.
The listing was managed and sold by StackCommerce on an affiliate basis, according to Neowin’s disclosure. That does not by itself prove the key is unauthorized, but activation, license provenance, transfer rights and support are separate questions.
What the $9.97 promotion actually offered
Neowin’s listing advertised a digital Windows 11 license in either Home or Pro edition. These are the terms stated on the January 17, 2026 promotion page, rather than a guarantee of what a later checkout page will show.

Read the original Neowin listing for the seller’s wording. Its comparison figures—about $139 for Home and $199 for Pro—were promotional reference prices, not a promise of Microsoft’s current price in every country.

Is the $9.97 deal still available?
The original article is dated January 17, 2026. As of the last documented check on August 18, 2026, similar $9.97 Windows promotions had appeared in Neowin’s 2026 tag listings, but those entries do not establish that the January offer, its inventory or its terms are still active. The exact checkout page is the only reliable place to confirm availability.
Before ordering, verify all of the following at checkout:
- The displayed price is still $9.97 before and after taxes or regional adjustments.
- Both Home and Pro are available, and you have selected the intended edition.
- The redemption deadline remains 30 days and starts on the purchase date.
- The page identifies the seller, refund policy and any country or region restriction.
- The current page is a continuation of the January offer rather than a different promotion with different terms.
Do not treat an old headline as proof that you can buy Windows 11 for $9.97 today.

What “digital,” “lifetime” and “one device” do—and do not—tell you
The sales page does not, by itself, establish whether the key is retail, OEM, refurbished-device or volume licensing. It also does not answer whether you may transfer it to another computer, reactivate after a motherboard replacement, use it in a virtual machine, or obtain direct Microsoft support.
A key can activate Windows and still carry narrower rights or weaker support than a Microsoft Store purchase. Separate these questions:
- Is StackCommerce functioning as a real commerce provider?
- Will the supplied key activate the selected edition?
- Is the key’s source and license category permitted for your intended use?
- What replacement, refund or support exists if activation later fails?
Ask the seller to state the license category, whether it is an upgrade or full license, geographic limits, transfer rules, motherboard-change treatment and the remedy for a rejected key. “Lifetime” should not be read as a promise of perpetual transferability.

Should you choose Home or Pro?
Windows 11 Pro is not automatically faster and does not guarantee better gaming performance. For most personal computers, Home provides the same core Windows experience. Pro is worthwhile when you need specific management, security or virtualization capabilities.

Check compatibility before buying
Existing Windows 11 installation
Open Start > Settings > System > Activation. Record the installed edition and activation state. The edition must match the key: a Home key cannot activate Pro, and a Pro key does not automatically grant transferable retail rights.

Windows 10 computer
First confirm that the hardware meets Windows 11 requirements and that the current Windows installation is genuine and activated. Back up important files. Windows 10-to-Windows 11 is an operating-system upgrade; Home-to-Pro is an edition upgrade; buying a key for an unlicensed PC is an activation purchase. They are different operations.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 compatibility and installation guidance also notes that Windows 11 Home setup and Pro setup for personal use require an internet connection and Microsoft account.
New or never-activated PC
A new device needs a valid product key or digital license. The promotion’s one-device wording does not prove that its key is intended for first activation, nor does it explain whether the key is tied to the first machine. Get that answer from the seller before purchasing.

How to redeem a Pro key on activated Windows 11 Home
Microsoft documents this procedure for a device already running an activated copy of Windows 11 Home:
- Save your work and connect the PC to the internet.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Change next to Change product key.
- Enter the 25-character Windows 11 Pro key exactly as supplied.
- Select Next and start the edition upgrade when prompted.
- Allow the restart to finish, then return to Activation to confirm Windows 11 Pro is activated.

If activation fails
- Re-enter the key carefully and check for transcription errors.
- Confirm that you bought Pro for a Pro installation, or Home for a Home installation.
- Verify that the current Windows edition is activated and the PC is online.
- Check whether the key was already redeemed elsewhere.
- Check the seller’s 30-day redemption deadline and any regional restriction.
- If the computer runs Enterprise, Education or Pro for Workstations, use the licensing path for that edition instead of forcing a Home-to-Pro workflow.
- If the Activation page lacks the expected upgrade option, install pending Windows updates and try Change product key again.
- Contact StackCommerce or the seller with your order confirmation, key, screenshots and error code before requesting a refund or replacement.

Hardware changes and the one-device restriction
The one-device term matters if you replace a motherboard, move Windows to a new PC, reinstall on a second computer, or use the key in a virtual machine. Microsoft says a significant hardware change can prevent Windows from finding a matching digital license; linking an eligible license to a Microsoft account can help with reactivation, but it does not override the seller’s transfer restrictions. Microsoft’s support documentation identifies the Microsoft Store as the recommended path for a Home-to-Pro upgrade when first-party licensing and support matter more than the lowest price.

- Your business requires formal procurement records or predictable support.
- You expect a motherboard replacement or migration to another PC.
