As of October 4, 2026, Microsoft has not announced a 2026 stock split in the official material reviewed. That is not a prediction that it will not split: Microsoft says its Board of Directors decides whether a split occurs, and no board timetable or price trigger is established. The suggestion that MSFT “seems ready” is not supported by an announced plan.

Has Microsoft announced a 2026 stock split?

No 2026 split announcement appears in Microsoft’s Investor Relations FAQ, which identifies the February 2003 transaction as its latest split. This is a status check as of October 4, 2026, not a guarantee about a future board decision. Microsoft says, “The Board of Directors makes the decision for any stock split.” Microsoft Investor Relations FAQ

The official materials reviewed do not establish a 2026 plan, announcement date, share-price trigger, or probability. A high share price, a large number of shares, or a history of past splits does not by itself show that another split is coming.

When did Microsoft last split its stock?

Microsoft’s most recent split was a 2-for-1 split in 2003. The company announced it on January 16, 2003; its FAQ lists February 14 as the split’s payable date and says shares began trading at the new split price on February 18. These are separate dates. Microsoft says the decision was made by its Board of Directors with the stated aim of making the stock more accessible to a broader range of investors. That historical rationale is not a stated reason for a 2026 split. Microsoft Investor Relations FAQ

Microsoft’s nine stock splits

Since its March 13, 1986 IPO, Microsoft has split its stock nine times, according to its Investor Relations FAQ:

Date listed by Microsoft Split ratio
September 18, 1987 2-for-1
April 12, 1990 2-for-1
June 26, 1991 3-for-2
June 12, 1992 3-for-2
May 20, 1994 2-for-1
December 6, 1996 2-for-1
February 20, 1998 2-for-1
March 26, 1999 2-for-1
February 14, 2003 2-for-1

Microsoft’s FAQ says one original share would equal 288 shares after the 2003 split, reflecting the cumulative effect of the splits it lists. Microsoft Investor Relations FAQ

What would a stock split do to MSFT shares?

A split changes the number of shares and the price per share proportionally; it does not, by itself, increase the value of an investor’s holding. In Microsoft’s 2-for-1 example, 100 shares at an illustrative $50 each become 200 shares at approximately $25 each. The total remains $5,000 at the moment of the split, before any subsequent market movement. Microsoft Investor Relations FAQ

For a different split ratio, the share count and per-share price adjust by the corresponding ratio. The market price can then move as it normally does. A split is therefore not the same as a dividend or a gain in the underlying value of a company.

Do Microsoft’s share count and buybacks mean a split is likely?

No. Microsoft’s FY2026 Form 10-K reported 7,425,545,491 common shares outstanding as of July 23, 2026, and said the company repurchased 36 million shares for $16.7 billion during FY2026. Those figures describe capitalization and repurchases; neither is a split announcement or evidence of board intent. Microsoft FY2026 Form 10-K, filed with the SEC

The decision remains with Microsoft’s Board of Directors. Past split timing does not create an automatic schedule, and the available official information gives no basis to forecast whether or when the board might act.
