The Washington Post announced on October 25, 2024, that it would not endorse a candidate in that year’s presidential race or in future presidential elections. The paper’s reporting attributed the decision to owner Jeff Bezos and said an endorsement of Kamala Harris had been drafted but not published. The announcement drew criticism from former Post journalists, prompted three editorial-board members to step down, and was followed by a reported wave of subscription cancellations.

What happened at The Washington Post?

Publisher Will Lewis announced the non-endorsement policy on October 25, 2024, 12 days before Election Day. It applied to the 2024 contest and future presidential races. The Post had endorsed candidates in the 2016 and 2020 elections; Jeff Bezos bought the paper in 2013. The Post’s announcement coverage and Columbia Journalism Review’s October 25 account reported that a Harris endorsement draft existed.

What was known about the draft?

The Post reported, citing people familiar with events, that Bezos made the decision and that opinion editor David Shipley had kept the draft closely held. According to that account, Shipley had not shared it with the full editorial board before Lewis announced the policy. The reporting does not establish that the full board voted on or approved a final endorsement. The draft was not published, so it should not be treated as a formal endorsement by the paper.

Why did Bezos defend the decision?

In an October 28, 2024, opinion piece, Bezos called the move “a principled decision” and said it was intended to help restore trust in the media. That was his stated rationale; the available reporting does not establish a separate or hidden motive. Bezos’s explanation set out the case for stepping away from presidential endorsements as a matter of public trust.

Why were Post staff and former journalists angry?

Critics focused on the timing, the appearance of owner influence, and what they saw as a conflict between the non-endorsement and the paper’s own political reporting. Former Post journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein said the decision, made 12 days before the election, ignored the paper’s reportorial evidence about the threat they believed Donald Trump posed to democracy. Former executive editor Martin Baron warned that Trump could interpret the move as an invitation to further intimidate Bezos. Those were the critics’ assessments, not established effects of the decision.

Three of the editorial board’s ten members said they were stepping down in response, the Post reported on October 28. Their departures were a concrete sign of internal disagreement, but they do not mean the board had approved the unpublished draft.

How many readers canceled subscriptions?

The Washington Post reported on October 29, 2024, that at least 250,000 readers had canceled subscriptions since the October 25 announcement. That is a contemporaneous figure reported by the newspaper, not an audited total or a current subscriber count. The Post’s October 29 report supplies the date and context for the number.
