Tailscale announced a $100 million Series B on May 4, 2022, to support continued product development and growth. The round was led by CRV and Insight Partners. It is not the company’s latest funding: Tailscale announced a $160 million Series C in April 2025, led by Accel.
Who invested in Tailscale’s $100 million Series B?
Tailscale co-founder Avery Pennarun announced the round on May 4, 2022. CRV and Insight Partners led it. Existing investors Accel, Heavybit, and Uncork Capital also participated, along with angel and smaller investors, according to Tailscale’s announcement.
SecurityWeek reported on May 6, 2022, that the financing brought Tailscale’s total raised to $115 million. TechCrunch reported that the round valued the company at more than C$1 billion. That valuation figure was reported in Canadian dollars; it is not the amount raised, and Tailscale’s announcement did not state a valuation. SecurityWeek and TechCrunch provide the respective figures.
Why did Tailscale raise the money?
Pennarun said the funding would let Tailscale continue its existing work at a sustainable pace, with attention to product quality, trust, security, customer service, and profitability. The company also said it would invest in marketing, sales, distribution, enterprise efforts, and growth. These were management’s stated aims in 2022, not a public accounting of how every dollar was ultimately spent.

The business context was its network-connectivity product. SecurityWeek described Tailscale as a WireGuard-based private networking service with zero configuration and end-to-end encryption, and noted integrations such as Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Okta, Caddy Server, Syncthing, and VS Code. TechCrunch described it as a way to connect devices and share software services, including as a possible corporate VPN replacement. Those descriptions are not independent tests of security, reliability, or performance.
How does the 2022 round compare with Tailscale’s 2025 funding?
| Round | Announced amount | Lead investors | Other named participants | Management’s stated priorities |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Series B, May 4, 2022 | $100 million | CRV and Insight Partners | Accel, Heavybit, Uncork Capital, angels and smaller investors | Continue product work; focus on quality, trust, security, customer service and profitability, while investing in sales, marketing, distribution, enterprise and growth |
| Series C, April 8, 2025 | $160 million USD (C$230 million) | Accel | CRV, Insight Partners, Heavybit, Uncork Capital, existing angel George Kurtz, and new investor Anthony Casalena | Reduce friction, scale the network without added complexity, make identity central to connectivity, and invest in engineering, product, markets, support for free customers, and backward compatibility |
The Series C details and priorities come from Tailscale’s April 8, 2025 announcement. Its description of identity-first networking—connecting to an app, teammate, or service instead of relying on a fixed machine IP address—is the company’s product positioning.

What the funding figures do—and do not—tell you
The $100 million and $160 million figures are amounts raised in separate, dated financing rounds. The reported C$1 billion-plus valuation is a separate 2022 figure attributed to TechCrunch. None of these figures establishes Tailscale’s revenue or its current valuation; the sources cited here do not establish either. TechCrunch reported in 2022 that the company had not disclosed revenue at that time, which does not establish its present revenue status.
